Elden Ring has no conventional Easy difficulty setting. The practical way to lower combat pressure is to use the systems the game provides: leave a fight that has become a wall, improve your flasks and equipment, invest in survivability, keep your equipment load in the normal-roll range, and summon Spirit Ashes when an encounter allows it. Follow Guidance of Grace for the main route, but detour through caves, tunnels, catacombs and other side areas for the upgrades that make that route less punishing.
Those choices do not require the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, a paid add-on or a particular “best” build. They also do not guarantee every NPC quest or hidden outcome; Elden Ring has too many branching activities for a simple route to preserve everything. The goal is a flexible rhythm: explore for power and story-rich discoveries, then return to the main path when your character and confidence have caught up.

What “easier” means in Elden Ring
In Elden Ring, difficulty is adjusted indirectly. You decide how much preparation to do before an encounter, how much help to bring, and whether to trade damage for health, stamina or a more forgiving dodge. The game’s official materials describe these systems, not a named difficulty selector.

None of these is universally best. A player who dies in one hit needs a different intervention from a player who survives but cannot dodge in heavy armor. Start with the problem you can observe, then choose the least disruptive fix.

Use this loop when a boss becomes a wall
Repeated attempts can teach an encounter, but they can also consume resources and confidence without improving your character. Use the following loop instead of treating every defeat as a command to keep retrying immediately.
- Stop after a meaningful run of failed attempts. If you are consistently dying before learning a new attack, mark the boss and leave. This is a strategic retreat, not a failure condition.
- Search nearby and earlier areas. Look for a tunnel, cave, catacomb, church or other side path. These areas can contain smithing stones, crafting materials, flask improvements or Spirit Ash upgrade materials.
- Spend runes on a survivability or damage correction. Put early level investment into Vigor if ordinary hits are ending attempts quickly. If your weapon is not keeping pace, find its upgrade materials and improve it rather than spreading levels across unrelated attributes.
- Check your equipment load. Remove or replace a low-value heavy item if it has pushed you into a heavy roll. A slower dodge can make a familiar attack feel impossible.
- Return with a specific test. On the next attempt, decide whether you are testing a new summon, a stronger flask supply, a weapon upgrade or a changed roll. One controlled change tells you more than changing everything at once.
You are not required to clear every side activity before progressing. Explore until you have a concrete improvement, then try the main encounter again.
Build for survival before chasing a perfect damage build
Prioritize Vigor when mistakes are ending attempts
Bandai Namco’s beginner stat guide identifies Vigor as the attribute that governs health. That makes it the most straightforward early investment for a player who is being defeated by one or two ordinary mistakes. There is no universal level target in the official guidance and no single best build for every weapon, so treat Vigor as a practical response to your death pattern rather than a rigid checklist.
- If you die with a large portion of the enemy’s health remaining, more Vigor gives you additional opportunities to heal, reposition and learn.
- If you survive comfortably but deal little damage, improve your weapon and meet its requirements before adding random offensive stats.
- If you are out of stamina while escaping or attacking, Endurance may solve the immediate problem more effectively than more health.
Know what the eight attributes do
The official beginner guide lists eight attributes. Their names help you understand the character screen even when you are not following a fixed build.

For a low-pressure first playthrough, avoid investing in every offensive attribute at once. Pick a weapon or ability you actually use, satisfy its requirements, then keep enough points available for Vigor and Endurance to support that playstyle.
Keep a usable dodge by managing equipment load
Endurance also controls equipment load. The official advanced stat guide defines a normal roll as a 30%–69.9% equipment-load ratio and a heavy roll as 70%–99.9%. The ratio compares the weight you are carrying with your maximum load; it is not simply the weight of one armor piece.

These thresholds come from an advanced guide published in 2023. Confirm the current behavior after applying the latest patch before making balance-sensitive decisions. In practice, removing a redundant weapon or swapping one armor piece can be a faster fix than several levels of Endurance.

Exploration is the game’s built-in preparation system. Bandai Namco’s beginner gameplay overview specifically points players toward Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears: Golden Seeds increase the number of flask uses, while Sacred Tears improve the effectiveness of flask recovery. More charges and stronger recovery make failed attempts less expensive and let you stay in the field longer.
A simple exploration checklist
- When you pass a minor landmark or church, investigate it instead of riding straight to the next Grace.
- Spend Golden Seeds and Sacred Tears at the appropriate flask menu rather than carrying them unused.
- When a boss is close to defeating you but your flask supply is the limiting factor, search the surrounding region before changing your entire build.
- Keep a mental note of unopened paths. Returning later with stronger damage or a summon is normal progression, not backtracking for its own sake.
Flask improvements help every combat style, so they are usually a safer detour than chasing a highly specific weapon or spell that may not suit you.
Use each side-area type for a specific purpose
Side content is easier to value when you know what it can provide. The official gameplay overview distinguishes several kinds of locations rather than presenting every detour as interchangeable.

Do not assume every side activity is mandatory. Choose the location that addresses your current bottleneck: tunnels for weapon damage, catacombs for summon growth, and flask-related discoveries for longer attempts.

The publisher describes Spirit Ashes as spirits found during the journey that can be summoned to fight alongside you and help even the odds against tougher foes. Using one is an intended playstyle option, not a shortcut that invalidates the encounter.

How to incorporate a summon
- Keep a Spirit Ash you understand in your equipment or quick-access layout.
- When the game makes a summon available in an encounter, try it early rather than saving it for a supposedly more important boss.
- Watch what the spirit changes: a durable spirit may hold attention, while another may create damage windows. Adjust your own attacks around those openings.
- If the spirit dies immediately, improve it through materials found in catacombs or test a different spirit instead of assuming summons are useless.
Exact summon restrictions vary by game state and encounter, and the official materials do not establish a complete list of eligible fights or a ranking of spirits. Treat the summon indicator you see in the game as the authoritative signal for that attempt.
Follow Guidance of Grace without treating it as a complete map
Grace trails point toward key destinations such as legacy dungeons, major bosses and important areas. They are useful when you have lost the main-story thread, but they are not a checklist of everything worth doing.
A two-track route keeps progress and discovery together
- Use Grace to choose the next main objective. This prevents aimless wandering when you want story progress.
- Before entering the objective, scan the nearby region. Look for a tunnel, catacomb, cave, church or visible landmark that could improve your flasks, weapons or summon.
- Return to the Grace-marked route after one or two useful detours. This keeps exploration from becoming an endless prerequisite.
- Record unusual doors, locked paths and NPC requests. A short note prevents you from forgetting a lead without pretending that one route can preserve every quest outcome.
Side dungeons have their own rewards and are part of the game’s intended content. They are optional in the sense that you can skip them, not in the sense that they are meaningless.
A low-pressure boss routine
Use this sequence whenever you reach a major fight and want a repeatable plan.
- Prepare your loadout. Confirm that your chosen weapon is upgraded as far as your materials allow and that your equipment load remains below the heavy-roll threshold.
- Set your flask allocation. Carry enough healing for mistakes; use FP-related flasks only if your build and summon or skill usage need them.
- Enter once to observe. Identify the attack that kills you most often and whether the arena gives you space to reposition.
- Summon when available. Use the ally to create a learning window, not merely to rush damage.
- Choose safer punish windows. One reliable hit after a known recovery is better than a long combo that leaves you trapped.
- Retreat deliberately. If you are no longer learning, leave, collect a concrete upgrade and return later.
This routine separates mechanical learning from character preparation. You can improve one without confusing the result with the other.

- Before defeating a major boss, revisit characters you have met if you care about their story.
- Do not assume that following every Grace trail is the same as completing every side storyline.
- Accept that a first playthrough may not contain every branch; use a later character or a separate guide if a specific ending or quest outcome matters.
These habits reduce accidental omissions without claiming that the game has one verified, lossless route.
Do you need Shadow of the Erdtree?
No. Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion that requires the base game and adds a separate Land of Shadow with its own weapons, equipment, enemies, bosses and plotlines. It is additional content, not a prerequisite for finishing or exploring the base game, and none of the survivability, flask, equipment-load or Spirit Ash advice above depends on buying it.
If you own the expansion, treat it as another destination to explore after meeting its access requirements. Do not purchase it as a difficulty setting; it does not turn the base game into an easier mode.
Keep the game updated before relying on balance details
Bandai Namco’s version 1.17 patch notes are dated August 27, 2026 and cover PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Apply the current update for your platform before relying on balance-sensitive behavior, then check newer notes if they have been released. The broad strategy here—explore for upgrades, protect your roll, build health and use available summons—does not require a particular paid edition.
Quick diagnosis: choose the fix that matches the symptom

A practical first-playthrough plan
- Choose equipment you enjoy using and raise its required attributes rather than spreading points across all eight attributes.
- Put early spare levels into Vigor when survivability is the problem; use Endurance when stamina or load is the problem.
- Keep your equipment-load ratio below 70%, preferably in the 30%–69.9% normal-roll range described by the advanced guide.
- At each new region, look for flask improvements before committing to a difficult boss.
- Clear a nearby tunnel when weapon damage lags, and a catacomb when you want to strengthen a Spirit Ash.
- Use summons whenever an eligible encounter offers them and you want the additional support.
- Follow Grace for the main route, but take purposeful detours instead of trying to clear every icon.
- Keep brief notes for NPC requests and revisit them when the story advances.
- Update the game and recheck patch notes before drawing conclusions from exact balance behavior.
This approach preserves the parts that make Elden Ring rewarding—discovering places, choosing your own route and seeing optional stories—while removing avoidable friction from combat. You are still learning the game, but you are no longer insisting that every lesson happen at the weakest possible version of your character.
