The easiest way to make a recognizable Pokémon Christmas ornament is to choose a format that matches your time and tools: bake a polymer-clay Pikachu or Poké Ball for a durable keepsake, decorate a clear fillable ornament for a quick three-dimensional result, fold an official Glaceon snowflake for the lowest-cost option, or assemble printable Pokémon cones for a classroom or party batch. The instructions below cover all four methods, with a detailed clay project and practical guidance for hanging, drying, safety and troubleshooting.
Choose the right Pokémon ornament method
All four methods can produce decorations that read clearly on a tree, gift, classroom display or family craft table. The main differences are how long they take, how much mess they create and whether the finished piece can survive repeated seasons.

Pick polymer clay when the ornament needs to last for many seasons or look like a small sculpture. Choose a clear plastic blank when you want a spherical Poké Ball without sculpting. Use the Glaceon snowflake when cost and simplicity matter most. Printable cones are the practical choice for a party, school activity or any situation where you need many ornaments quickly.

For a polymer-clay ornament
- Oven-bake polymer clay in the colors your character needs: yellow, red, white and black cover a Pikachu or Poké Ball project.
- A protected work surface, such as a craft mat or disposable covering, to keep uncured clay off furniture.
- An oven-safe baking sheet or mat.
- A toothpick or sculpting tool for eyes, seams, cheeks and other small details.
- Ribbon or string for hanging.
- Either a small hole made before baking or an eye screw embedded according to the clay manufacturer’s directions.
For a clear fillable Poké Ball
- A clear plastic fillable Christmas ornament that opens into two halves.
- Red and white acrylic paint or paint pens.
- Black paint for the center band and a small white button detail.
- Ribbon or string.
For paper projects
- Printer paper and a printer for the Glaceon snowflake or cone template.
- Scissors; use child-safe scissors for younger crafters.
- Tape or string for the snowflake.
- Glue, pipe cleaners and optional sparkle glue for cones.
- Colored pencils, crayons or markers if you print a black-and-white design.
Detailed project: polymer-clay Poké Ball ornament
A Poké Ball works especially well because its red-and-white split, black center band and circular button are recognizable even at a small size. Keep the finished form fairly flat or use two matching curved pieces if you want a lighter ornament for a narrow branch.

1. Condition and divide the clay
- Cover your work surface and knead each color until it is smooth and flexible. Conditioning reduces cracks and makes thin details easier to attach.
- Make the main red and white sections similar in size so the two halves meet cleanly. Set aside black clay for the center band and button.
- Keep the clay thickness consistent. The curing schedule depends on the thickest part of the piece, not merely its overall width.
2. Form the ball
- For a flat ornament, press the red and white clay into two matching semicircles or cut a circular base and place the colors on its upper and lower halves.
- Smooth the join between red and white without blurring the boundary. A ruler edge, card or sculpting tool can help create a straight split.
- Shape the outside edge into a clean circle. Avoid making the center too thin, because a fragile edge can break during handling.
3. Add the band and button
- Roll black clay into a narrow strip and place it across the red-white boundary.
- Add a small black or white circular button at the center of the band. Press it gently so it bonds without flattening the ornament.
- Use a toothpick to correct edges and remove fingerprints. Do not add a deep groove that could become a crack during baking.
4. Create the hanger
- Before curing, make a hole near the top with a toothpick or sculpting tool, leaving enough clay around it to resist tearing.
- Alternatively, embed an eye screw if the clay package permits that method. Position it straight so the finished Poké Ball hangs face-forward.
- Check the hole after every detail is added; clay can partly close it while you smooth the surface.
5. Cure it correctly
Sculpey’s published guidance is 275°F (130°C) for 30 minutes per ¼ inch (6 mm) of thickness. Measure the thickest section and follow the clay package for your specific product if it gives a different schedule. Bake on an oven-safe sheet or mat, keep the area ventilated as directed on the label and never leave the oven unattended.
- Preheat the oven to the package temperature.
- Place the ornament on the prepared sheet, supported so it does not distort.
- Bake for the time calculated from the thickest point.
- Let it cool completely before testing the hanger or attaching ribbon. Polymer clay can feel softer while warm and become firmer as it cools.
6. Hang the finished Poké Ball
Thread ribbon or string through the cured hole or eye screw and tie a secure loop. If the ornament will be handled by children, use a short loop and check that no sharp wire end is exposed.

A Pikachu face can be made as a flat plaque, which keeps the weight low and makes the features visible from across the room. The essential cues are yellow coloring, long ears, red cheeks and black ear tips.

Build the face
- Condition yellow clay and press it into a rounded face shape. Slightly flatten the back so it rests against the tree.
- Form two long ears and attach them to the top. Keep the bases broad enough that they will not snap after curing.
- Add black tips to the ears, two black eyes and red cheeks. A toothpick can mark tiny highlights or nostrils.
- Make a small hanging hole at the top or embed an eye screw before baking.
- Cure according to the package instructions, using the same thickness-based calculation described for the Poké Ball.
Do not overload a small Pikachu with details that disappear at tree distance. A clean silhouette and high-contrast cheeks usually communicate the character better than many tiny accessories.
Fast 3D project: clear fillable Poké Ball ornament
A clear fillable plastic ornament blank provides the spherical shape without sculpting. A tutorial from Geeky Gryphons uses this type of blank as its base.
- Separate the two halves and wash or wipe them if the surface has dust or manufacturing residue. Let them dry fully.
- Paint one half red and the other half white, or paint the outside in sections while the halves are assembled if your blank closes securely. Thin coats reduce drips.
- Once the color is dry, add the black center band around the meeting line. Paint a small white button over the band at the front.
- Allow every painted area to dry completely before touching the surface or closing the ornament.
- Snap the halves together, check that the seam is aligned, and attach ribbon or string to the ornament cap.
For a different look, place lightweight paper confetti, a character name or a small amount of safe decorative filler inside before closing it. Keep the contents loose enough that the halves still lock; never force a cap that is not seated.

Lowest-cost project: official Glaceon paper snowflake
The Play! Pokémon Glaceon snowflake uses ordinary paper and a printable design. Its listed materials are paper, scissors and tape or string, so it works well when you need a quick activity with minimal supplies.
- Print the Glaceon template at the size you want.
- Color the design if you used a black-and-white version.
- Cut around the square and remove the gray areas indicated by the template.
- Fold on the solid lines, then unfold the paper so the snowflake lies flat.
- Attach tape or string to hang the decoration. The official instructions say, “Use tape or string to hang up your beautiful decoration.”
Use heavier paper if your printer accepts it, but test-fold one sheet first: paper that is too thick can be difficult to cut and unfold cleanly. Store finished snowflakes flat in a folder or envelope between seasons.
Batch-friendly project: printable Pokémon cones
Printable cones are efficient for a classroom, scout meeting or family party because each person can assemble the same basic shape and personalize it afterward. DLTK lists Pikachu, Ash, Blastoise, Dragonair, Lugia, Mew, Mewtwo and Scyther templates.

- Print a color template, or choose a black-and-white version for a coloring activity.
- Cut around the cone and its tab.
- Apply glue to the tab and attach it to the opposite edge, forming the cone.
- Hold the seam until the glue grips, then let it dry before adding the hanger.
- Decorate with pipe cleaners or sparkle glue. Keep embellishments light so the cone does not collapse on the branch.
- Punch a small hole near the top and thread string, or attach a loop to the inside with tape.
Prepare one sample before the event so you can show where the tab folds and how much glue is needed. Pre-cutting difficult sections can help younger children participate without turning the activity into an adult-only task.

Use simple silhouettes
At hanging distance, bold shapes outperform fine detail. A Poké Ball needs the red-white division, black band and center button. Pikachu needs the yellow face, long ears, red cheeks and black ear tips. If the ornament is smaller than your palm, enlarge the most important features rather than adding more of them.

You can add a Santa hat, scarf or snow detail while keeping the Pokémon’s identifying colors visible. Mattel’s 2018 Mega Construx Holiday Pikachu release used a Santa-hat Pikachu concept and a Poké Ball ornament attachment, demonstrating how a holiday accessory can be combined with the familiar design.

Use Pokémon references as inspiration
Pokémon Center holiday examples have included Munchlax, Stantler, Spheal, Slurpuff, Mime Jr. and Pikachu ornaments in 2023. The Pokémon Company’s 2025 holiday release, dated 13 October 2025, also showed seasonal products including Alolan Exeggutor and Pikachu resin-cast ornaments. These examples are useful for choosing colors and poses, but seasonal products and inventory can change.
Safety, drying and storage
- Follow the clay manufacturer’s temperature and time instructions exactly. The 275°F (130°C) and 30-minutes-per-¼-inch schedule is Sculpey guidance; another clay formula may differ.
- Use ventilation appropriate to the product label and protect furniture from uncured clay.
- Keep polymer clay, small eye screws and loose embellishments away from very young children and pets.
- Use child-safe scissors with supervision. Never place paper directly against a heat source, candle or open flame.
- Let paint and glue dry fully before adding ribbon or closing a fillable ornament.
- Store paper pieces flat and place clay or plastic ornaments in separate layers so painted surfaces do not rub together.
Troubleshooting common problems
The clay ornament cracks
Cracks usually come from uneven thickness, sharp thin transitions or insufficient conditioning. Smooth the affected area before baking if possible, and avoid making ears, rims or hanging holes paper-thin. For a finished piece, a crack that reaches the hanger is a reason to retire or repair the ornament rather than risk it falling.
The clay colors smear together
Dark clay can transfer onto white or yellow while you work. Wipe tools and hands between colors, build the light sections first and add the black details last. Use a clean sheet of protected covering for the final smoothing pass.

Apply several thin coats instead of one heavy coat and let each coat dry before turning the half. If the seam becomes sticky, wait longer before assembly; forcing the halves together can mark the paint or make the cap detach.
The paper snowflake tears
Make sure cuts are made only in the template’s gray areas and leave the uncut bridges intact. If the paper is damp from ink, let it dry flat before folding and unfolding.
A cone will not hold its shape
Check that the tab is glued to the opposite edge, not to the outside of the cone. Use a small amount of glue, press the seam until it sets and avoid adding heavy decorations before the paper has dried.
Personal-use and copyright considerations
Pokémon names, logos and character designs belong to their respective rights holders. Treat these projects as personal, non-commercial fan crafts, and do not imply that a handmade ornament is officially endorsed. If you share photographs, describe them as your own craft project and avoid presenting a copied commercial product as an official release.
