You make Cricut stickers with two devices: an inkjet home printer produces the color sheet, and a compatible Cricut cutting machine scans that sheet and cuts the outlines. The complete Print Then Cut project must stay in Cricut Design Space so the registration marks print at the correct size.
This guide covers machine compatibility, artwork setup, printable media, printer settings, cutting, calibration, and the fixes for common alignment and scanning problems.
Understand what a Cricut does in a sticker project
A Cricut cutting machine does not print the colors in your design. Design Space sends the artwork to your inkjet printer first. You then place the printed sheet on a mat, load it into the Cricut, and let the machine read its black registration marks before cutting around each sticker.
Cricut describes this sequence as creating a design in Design Space, printing it on a home printer, and loading the print into a compatible smart cutting machine for cutting. The official explanation is in How to Print Then Cut in Design Space (edited May 15, 2025).

Because the printer and cutter perform different jobs, a successful setup needs both an inkjet printer and a Cricut model with Print Then Cut support. A Cricut machine without that feature cannot register and cut a printed sticker sheet through this workflow.
Gather the required equipment and supplies
| Item | Purpose | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Print Then Cut-capable Cricut machine | Reads registration marks and cuts the printed outlines | Confirm the model is supported and selected correctly in Design Space |
| Computer or mobile device with Design Space | Creates or uploads artwork and controls the print-and-cut sequence | Use the current Design Space app and keep printing inside the project |
| Inkjet home printer | Prints the artwork and registration marks | Use inkjet-compatible sticker media; do not use a laser printer with Cricut printable sticker paper |
| Printable sticker paper | Provides the adhesive surface for each sticker | Identify the printable side and choose the matching material setting |
| Fine-Point Blade and Housing | Cuts the sticker sheet | Install the blade specified by the material workflow |
| LightGrip mat | Holds the printed sheet flat during scanning and cutting | Use a clean, adequately tacky mat and align the sheet as shown on screen |
| Brayer (optional) | Smooths the sheet onto the mat and helps prevent lifting | Useful for thicker or less flexible media, but not required |
These supplies are listed in Cricut’s Printable Sticker Paper workflow and its Create Sticker guide, both edited April 14, 2026.
Check whether your Cricut supports Print Then Cut
Cricut currently identifies Joy Xtra, Joy 2, Explore models, Maker models, and Venture as Print Then Cut-capable families. The original Cricut Joy is not compatible with Print Then Cut. Product lineups and app support can change, so check the machine selector in your installed version of Design Space before preparing a sheet.

Do not infer compatibility from a machine’s ability to cut ordinary vinyl or paper. Print Then Cut requires the optical sensor and the software workflow that places and reads registration marks. If your machine is not listed as compatible, you can still cut unprinted shapes, but this printed-sticker method will not work.
For model-specific instructions, see How to Print Then Cut with Cricut Joy 2. Cricut also maintains a current size-limit page at How large can I Print Then Cut?; consult it when you need the maximum sheet or design dimensions for a particular model.

Prepare sticker artwork in Design Space
Create or upload the design
Open Design Space, start a new canvas, and create the artwork with its shape tools, text, and images, or upload a finished file. Keep the design inside the Print Then Cut area shown by the app. The available area is model-dependent, so do not assume that a sheet or a large group of stickers fits every Cricut.
Flatten layered artwork into one printable sticker
If a sticker contains several layers, select all of the layers and choose Flatten. Flatten converts the selection into one printable layer. The machine then cuts the outside shape of that printable layer instead of cutting every internal color layer separately.
Attach is not a replacement for Flatten when you want one outer sticker cut. Attach preserves separate layers and their individual operations; Flatten is the command that tells Design Space to treat the selected artwork as one printable image with one outside contour.
Add an outline with Offset
To create a white or colored border, select the artwork and use Offset. Adjust the offset inward or outward to make a surrounding layer, then set its color and place it behind the artwork. Flatten the finished stack when it should print and receive one outside cut.
Use Create Sticker when it fits the project
Design Space’s Create Sticker tool can generate a sticker appearance from selected objects. Select the objects, choose Create Sticker, set the available border and appearance options, then choose Make and follow the print prompts. For a sheet with repeated copies, use Project Copies on Mat Preview to specify the number of copies before printing. Cricut documents this workflow in How to use Create Sticker in Design Space.

Decide whether you need bleed
Bleed extends a small amount of color beyond the intended cut line. The extra ink is trimmed away, helping color reach the edge if the cut is fractionally inside the artwork. Before cutting, the bleed can look fuzzy; that is expected because the excess is meant to be removed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a Create Sticker design that should have no border, Cricut advises turning bleed off. If you intentionally want a border or edge color, leave the appropriate bleed option enabled and judge the result after the cut rather than from the pre-cut preview.
Print the sheet without changing its scale
Use an inkjet printer and the correct side of the media
Cricut Printable Sticker Paper is intended for inkjet printers. Cricut warns that laser printing can damage the sticker material or the printer, so do not substitute a laser printer for this product. The printable blank side is the side that goes toward the printer; the reverse has a grid and Cricut logo. Confirm the orientation with the package or product instructions before loading the sheet.
Older or thicker stock may feed more reliably when the printer is set to a thicker-material mode or manual feed. Use the printer’s own feed guidance rather than forcing a rigid sheet through a standard tray.
Keep the print command inside Design Space
When Design Space displays the print dialog, print from that dialog and leave the page scale unchanged. Exporting the project as a PDF and printing it from another application can resize the registration marks. Cricut warns that incorrectly sized marks can make the subsequent cut inaccurate.

Use these print settings unless your model-specific instructions say otherwise:
- Portrait orientation.
- One page per sheet.
- No narrow-margin, edge-printing, or automatic-centering option.
- Turn off “Fit to page,” “Shrink to fit,” and any other scaling command.
- Keep the preferred top and left margins in the approximate 0.5-to-1.5-inch range stated by Cricut rather than manually repositioning the page.
After printing, allow wet ink to dry according to your inkjet and media instructions. Do not laminate or add a glossy overlay before the sensor-reading step unless the material’s instructions specifically support it; a changed surface can affect mark detection.
Load the printed sheet and cut it
- On the printed page, identify the black registration marks and the artwork orientation shown in Design Space.
- Place the sheet on a LightGrip mat in that same orientation. Align the sheet with the mat’s reference corner and smooth it down evenly; a brayer can help remove bubbles.
- In Design Space, choose the material setting that matches the actual sticker stock. Do not select a generic setting solely because it is familiar; pressure and passes differ by material.
- Insert the mat into the Cricut and press the machine’s load control.
- Start the cut. The sensor will scan the printed registration marks before the blade begins cutting.
- Wait for Design Space to tell you to unload. Remove the mat only after the cut is complete, then peel a corner or lift the sheet to inspect the result.
Keep the entire Print Then Cut sequence in one Design Space session. Printing a separately exported file, changing its scale, and then returning to Design Space breaks the size relationship between artwork and registration marks.
Choose sticker media by printer, sensor, and finish
| Material choice | Official guidance | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| Cricut Printable Sticker Paper | Cricut provides a dedicated Print Then Cut workflow and specifies inkjet printing. | The most direct documented path; verify feed direction, drying time, and the matching Design Space material setting. |
| Printable vinyl | Cricut provides separate Printable Vinyl Instructions. | Use it when you want a vinyl-based printable surface, but follow its own print-side, loading, and cut settings rather than sticker-paper defaults. |
| Printable waterproof sticker set | Cricut provides product-specific Printable Waterproof Sticker Set Instructions. | Follow the specified layer and finishing sequence; do not assume every waterproof sheet behaves like ordinary sticker paper. |
| Non-Cricut glossy, reflective, dark, or holographic stock | Cricut warns that finish and color can interfere with sensor reading, depending on the machine and material. | Check the exact machine and material guidance before buying or printing. Reliability cannot be assumed from the word “printable” alone. |
Older Explore Air 2 and earlier machines require non-reflective matte white or transparent materials for dependable mark reading. Newer machines support certain Cricut printable gold, silver, and holographic materials, but Cricut warns that non-Cricut dark, glossy, or holographic surfaces may reduce sensor accuracy. Treat every unusual finish as a compatibility question.
Calibrate when cuts do not align
Machines are supplied pre-calibrated, but calibration can correct a cut that consistently lands inside, outside, or to one side of the printed artwork. Start calibration when Design Space prompts you, or when a test cut shows a repeatable print-to-cut offset. Calibration is model- and device-specific, so use the flow displayed for your machine rather than copying a menu path from another generation.
Best Value

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Open Design Space and select the machine you are calibrating.
- Open the Print Then Cut calibration command from the machine or settings area shown by the app.
- Print the calibration sheet through the on-screen command; do not export it or alter its scale.
- Load the sheet exactly as the screen illustrates and let the machine scan and cut the test lines.
- Inspect the test cut, enter the indicated line or value when prompted, and repeat the test if the app requests it.
- Save the calibration only after the final test matches the printed reference.
Cricut’s calibration page, edited September 3, 2026, gives current detailed steps for Explore 5 and Maker 5. Its calibration sheet requirements include portrait mode, black ink, white non-textured copy paper, one page per sheet, unchanged scale, and no edge printing or centering. Other models or app versions may present different screens, so follow the exact instructions shown for your setup: Calibrating your machine for Print Then Cut.
Major Print Then Cut changes introduced beginning in June 2022 caused some users to need a new calibration. If your machine was accurate before a Design Space update and is consistently inaccurate afterward, recalibration is a reasonable first response.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot failed scans and inaccurate cuts
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The machine cannot find the registration marks | Reflective, dark, glossy, or patterned material; glare; marks obscured by coating | Use a supported matte material, reduce glare, and verify the exact guidance for your machine and sheet. Older Explore Air 2 and earlier models are particularly restricted. |
| The cut is uniformly offset from the artwork | Calibration is out of date or the wrong machine profile is selected | Confirm the selected machine, then run the on-screen Print Then Cut calibration and inspect the test cut. |
| The cut grows more inaccurate across the page | Printed scale changed, page was centered or fitted, or marks were resized | Reprint from Design Space with scaling unchanged, portrait orientation, one page per sheet, and no fit-to-page or centering options. |
| The sheet moves on the mat | Mat is dirty or the material was not smoothed down | Use a clean LightGrip mat, align the sheet to the displayed corner, and press it flat with a brayer if needed. |
| The printer jams or skews the sheet | Stock is too thick for the normal feed path | Choose the printer’s thicker-media or manual-feed setting and follow the media manufacturer’s loading direction. |
| The blade cuts through too deeply or not deeply enough | Material setting does not match the actual stock | Return to the material menu and select the setting specified for that stock; perform a small test cut before a full sheet. |
| Colors reach the edge unevenly | Bleed is disabled when edge coverage was needed, or the bleed is being judged before trimming | Enable bleed for designs that need edge color, and remember that the pre-cut bleed can look fuzzy because it is trimmed away. Turn bleed off for a borderless Create Sticker design as Cricut advises. |
Prevent the most common workflow mistakes
- Buying the wrong Cricut: verify Print Then Cut support before purchase or setup; the original Cricut Joy is not compatible.
- Using a laser printer: Cricut Printable Sticker Paper is for inkjet printers, and laser heat can damage the material or printer.
- Flattening too late: flatten a multi-layer sticker before making it when the goal is one outer contour.
- Using Attach for an outer cut: Attach preserves layer operations; it does not replace Flatten for a single sticker outline.
- Printing from a PDF: keep the print and cut in Design Space so registration marks retain their intended size.
- Changing printer scaling: disable fit, shrink, center, and edge-printing options that alter the page geometry.
- Ignoring media finish: glossy, reflective, dark, and holographic sheets can prevent sensor readings even when they feed normally.
- Loading the back of the sheet: identify the printable blank side; the reverse of Cricut sticker paper has a grid and Cricut logo.
- Removing the mat early: wait for Design Space’s unload prompt so the machine completes every cut.
A reliable first-project sequence
For a first sheet, use a simple, high-contrast design on matte, inkjet-compatible sticker paper. Confirm the machine in Design Space, flatten each sticker’s layers, add an offset only if you want a border, and leave bleed off for a borderless Create Sticker design. Print one sheet through the in-app dialog without scaling changes, let it dry, and place it on a LightGrip mat in the displayed orientation. Select the matching material setting, allow the sensor to scan, and inspect the cut before producing multiple copies.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If that test is accurate, use Project Copies on Mat Preview for a larger batch. If it is not, stop and calibrate or change the material before consuming more sheets. This staged approach separates artwork, printer, media, and machine problems instead of creating a full stack of misaligned stickers.
When to consult Cricut’s model-specific instructions
Use the general workflow above for the shared Print Then Cut sequence, then open the product-specific page whenever the material or machine differs:
