Vanilla Minecraft has no cheesemaking chain. To make the cheeses described here, play Java Edition with a cheese mod. Fromage is the most complete documented option for Java 1.21.1: it runs on Fabric and NeoForge and takes you from animal milk to curds, pressed wheels, specialty treatments and aging. Cheesus offers a more compact, cooking-oriented recipe system, while Dairycraft presents cheesemaking as an educational sequence.
This guide explains the equipment, temperature rules, complete Fromage workflow, two exact recipes, the processing differences among all 18 Fromage cheeses, and how the alternatives compare.

Choose a mod and matching Minecraft version
Your first decision is edition and version. The detailed workflow in this article is for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1. Fromage’s 2026 project listing describes it as a complete cheesemaking mod for that version on both Fabric and NeoForge. Select one loader and install its 1.21.1 profile before adding the matching Fromage file. Do not mix a Fabric build with NeoForge, or use a mod build for a different Minecraft version.
Fromage
Fromage is the choice when you want a production line rather than a single crafting recipe. It adds cow, goat and sheep milk; milk cauldrons and bottles; four culture types; rennet; a Cheese Vat with three heat levels; curd cutting; small and wheel presses; washing, stretching, cooking, cheddaring, piercing, waxing and aging; whey processing; an aging rack; placeable cheeses; and knife-based slicing.

Cheesus
Cheesus uses a different, simpler structure. Its recipes are distributed among ordinary crafting, campfire cooking, smelting, smoking, blasting and Farmer’s Delight cooking. It is useful if you prefer recipe categories and food-mod integration over a vat-and-press production line. The available project information does not establish a single Minecraft version, loader, cheese count, aging-equipment requirement or JEI integration for Cheesus, so check the release you install for those details.
Dairycraft
Dairycraft is an educational route rather than an 18-variety aging system. Its lesson plan has the player use a Cheese Maker and recipe book, pasteurize milk, add bacterial culture and rennet, heat the mixture again, and separate curds from whey. Choose it when the lesson-like sequence is the goal; it is not equivalent to Fromage’s vat, mold and aging workflow.

Set up Fromage before making a batch
- Create or back up a Java Edition 1.21.1 world.
- Install either the Fabric or NeoForge loader for 1.21.1 and launch that profile once so the game creates its mod directory.
- Install the Fromage build made for the same loader and Minecraft version. Keep every required dependency on the same version line.
- Start the game and use the inventory search or the installed recipe viewer to confirm that the Cheese Vat, cultures, rennet, Curd Knife, molds and presses are present.
- Gather milk, the culture named by your recipe, rennet, an empty bucket, the required heat source and the mold or finishing item before beginning. A batch can stall if you leave the vat to fetch a bucket or mold.
Fromage supports milk in bottles and cauldrons as well as milk buckets. Cow, goat and sheep milk are not interchangeable when a recipe calls for a particular animal.
Understand the Cheese Vat’s three temperatures
The block directly below the Cheese Vat determines its temperature. Heat is not cosmetic: curds retain the temperature at which they were produced, and a recipe requiring another temperature can reject those curds. Set the heat source before you add rennet and keep the batch at the recipe’s specified level.

| Vat temperature | Heat source directly below | Documented uses |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Magma Block | Fresh Culture recipes and low-heat Mesophilic recipes |
| Medium | Lit Campfire or lit Soul Campfire | Most Mesophilic recipes and Blue Mold recipes |
| High | Lava or Lava Cauldron | Thermophilic recipes, Ricotta and Brunost |
An unlit campfire can show the vat’s tray but supplies no heat. Light it before attempting a medium-temperature recipe. If you made curds over the wrong source, starting a second batch at the correct temperature is safer than trying to repair those curds.
The standard Fromage production loop
Most milk-based cheeses follow the same chain, with one or two recipe-specific operations inserted before pressing or aging.
- Load milk and culture. Put the required milk into the Cheese Vat, then add the named culture: Fresh, Mesophilic, Thermophilic or Blue Mold.
- Apply the matching heat. Place Magma, a lit campfire, a lit Soul Campfire, lava or a Lava Cauldron directly under the vat according to the recipe.
- Add rennet. Rennet starts coagulation. If the recipe calls for another ingredient at this point, follow its entry in the in-game recipe viewer.
- Cut the curd. Use the Curd Knife. The recipe can specify a cut result such as Large Curds; cutting at the wrong stage leaves the batch unfinished.
- Perform the special treatment. Depending on the cheese, wash the curds, stretch them, cook them, or cheddar them. Fresh Cheese has no extra treatment; other varieties may require one before draining or after it.
- Drain the whey. Use an empty bucket on the vat. Keep the whey: Ricotta and Brunost use whey as their starting material rather than following the normal milk-and-rennet path.
- Collect the curds. A normal milk batch produces eight identical curds. Check their temperature before putting them into a mold.
- Press in the correct mold. The Small Mold & Press takes four individually slotted curds. The Wheel Mold & Press takes all eight. Select the pressing mode and any coating or additive required by the recipe.
- Finish the cheese. Pierce, wax, craft, cook, stretch or place the cheese as directed. If it produces an unaged wheel, move it to the aging rack for the stated time.
Small versus wheel pressing
The small press consumes four curds and makes a smaller cheese. Each of its four slots must be filled individually. The wheel press consumes the complete set of eight curds. A recipe that says “eight Large Curds” cannot be completed by putting four into the small press, and spare curds from a wheel batch cannot be assumed to make a second wheel.
Why temperature must be planned first
Because each curd remembers its production temperature, do not produce a large batch and decide on a cheese afterward. Choose the recipe, identify its culture and heat level, then make exactly the curds that its mold and pressing step consume.

Two complete Fromage recipes
Fresh Cheese
- Put a Cow Milk Bucket and Fresh Culture into the Cheese Vat.
- Place a Magma Block directly below the vat for low heat.
- Add rennet.
- Use the Curd Knife once. The vat should produce Large Curds.
- Drain the whey with an empty bucket and collect the eight curds.
- Put four curds into the four slots of the Small Mold & Press.
- Use Drain mode with no additive.
- Collect the Fresh Cheese. It is ready immediately and does not need aging.
Brie
- Put a Cow Milk Bucket and Mesophilic Culture into the Cheese Vat.
- Use a Magma Block directly below it, because this documented Brie recipe uses low heat.
- Add rennet, cut once to Large Curds, drain the whey and collect all eight curds.
- Fill the Wheel Mold & Press with the eight Large Curds.
- Add White Mold Coating and select Drain mode.
- Take the Unaged Brie Wheel to the aging rack.
- Age it for one Minecraft day, then collect the finished Brie.
How the other Fromage cheeses differ
These distinctions tell you what to look for in each recipe entry. They are not interchangeable shortcuts: a wheel can have the right milk and culture and still fail if the required treatment is skipped.
| Cheese | Distinctive documented operation | Timing or result stated |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh Cheese | Low-heat Fresh Culture batch; four curds in the small press, Drain mode, no additive | Ready immediately |
| Brie | Mesophilic low-heat batch; wheel press with White Mold Coating | Age Unaged Brie Wheel for one Minecraft day |
| Camembert | Recipe-specific mold and aging treatment | Not stated in the available recipe summary |
| Gouda | Wash the curds before pressing | Exact wash and aging values are recipe-specific |
| Edam | Wash the curds, then wax the cheese before aging | Waxing is required before aging |
| Cheddar | Cheddar the curds after draining | Exact pressing and aging values are recipe-specific |
| Mozzarella | Stretch the curds before draining | Stretching precedes whey removal |
| Parmesan | Use cooked curds | Exact cooking and aging values are recipe-specific |
| Blue Cheese | Pierce the wheel before aging | Piercing precedes aging |
| Goat Cheese | Use the goat-milk recipe entry and its specified culture and press treatment | Not stated in the recipe summary |
| Goat Feta | Follow the goat-milk feta recipe and its specified finishing steps | Not stated in the recipe summary |
| Herbed Goat Cheese | Follow the goat-milk recipe with its herb addition | Not stated in the recipe summary |
| Feta | Use the recipe’s specified curd treatment and mold | Not stated in the recipe summary |
| Pecorino | Use cooked curds, as with Parmesan’s documented cooking distinction | Exact values are recipe-specific |
| Sheep Blue Cheese | Use sheep milk and pierce the wheel before aging | Piercing precedes aging |
| Manchego | Follow its recipe-specific culture, mold and aging instructions | Not stated in the recipe summary |
| Ricotta | Process whey rather than starting the normal milk-and-rennet chain | Use high heat |
| Brunost | Process whey rather than starting the normal milk-and-rennet chain | Use high heat |
For any cheese whose exact culture, mold, additive or aging interval is not listed above, open the Fromage recipe entry in your installed recipe viewer. The operations in the table identify the important branch in the workflow without guessing ingredients or durations.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to do with whey, wheels and finished cheese
Draining does not mean the liquid is useless. Keep the whey from a batch if you plan to make Ricotta or Brunost; both are high-heat whey recipes. Milk cheeses generally become an unaged curd product or wheel after pressing. Some can be placed directly as decorative blocks, and a knife can slice placeable cheeses for serving. Aging is a separate step: a product that says “Unaged” is not finished until its recipe’s rack time, coating or piercing requirement is complete.

The vat shows a tray but will not process
Check the block underneath. A campfire must be lit; an unlit campfire is not medium heat. Also verify that the source matches the recipe: Magma Block for low, a lit campfire or Soul Campfire for medium, and lava or a Lava Cauldron for high.

The recipe rejects my curds
Curds retain production temperature. If they were made over the wrong heat source, they may be unusable for a recipe requiring another temperature. Produce a fresh batch with the correct source instead of mixing curds from different temperatures.

I cannot complete the press
Count the slots and compare them with the mold. The small press needs four individually inserted curds; the wheel press needs all eight from a normal batch. Confirm that the curd size matches the recipe and that any coating or additive is in the required slot. A Brie wheel, for example, needs White Mold Coating and Drain mode.
The cheese is still unaged
Look for a finishing operation in the recipe. Edam must be waxed before aging, Blue Cheese wheels must be pierced, and Brie must spend one Minecraft day on the aging rack. Pressing alone does not satisfy those requirements.
I drained the wrong liquid
Use an empty bucket to remove whey. If you intend to make Ricotta or Brunost, retain that whey and start the corresponding high-heat process rather than discarding it.

Which mod should you use?
Pick Fromage for a detailed production chain
Choose Fromage if you want temperature management, distinct cultures, curd handling, multiple molds, specialty treatments and an aging rack. It is also the only option in this comparison with a documented list of 18 cheeses and a stated Java 1.21.1 Fabric/NeoForge target.
Pick Cheesus for category-based cooking
Choose Cheesus if your preferred play style is to inspect recipes under crafting, campfire, furnace-like and Farmer’s Delight cooking systems. Its workflow is less centered on one vat, and the available information does not establish the same mold-and-aging depth as Fromage.
Pick Dairycraft for a classroom explanation
Choose Dairycraft when the learning sequence matters more than a large cheese catalog: pasteurize milk, add culture and rennet, heat again, and separate curds and whey with the Cheese Maker and recipe book.
For players who want to inspect or add recipes
Forge’s official recipe documentation describes mod recipes as data-driven JSON resources. Recipe files can use shaped or shapeless crafting formats, which is useful for datapack and mod authors inspecting or extending a recipe system. Ordinary players do not need to edit JSON: use the installed mod’s recipe viewer or documentation, because a vat recipe, a press recipe and a cooking recipe can each have different inputs and processing rules.
