A multi-step checkout can feel straightforward when every screen asks only for information needed to complete the order, explains what comes next, and makes errors easy to fix. Step count alone is a poor measure of effort: focus on the fields customers must consider, whether they are relevant, and how well the flow works on desktop and mobile. No layout guarantees higher conversion; judge it against real customer tasks and usability evidence.
How many steps should a checkout have?
There is no universal ideal. Baymard Institute reported an average of 5.1 steps for a new-user checkout in its 2024 benchmark, counting from cart through order review. Its findings indicate that the work required at those steps—especially the number of form fields users must consider—generally matters more to usability than the step count itself. A flow with eight or more steps can still create usability problems.
Design around the task, not a target number. A few focused screens can help customers understand progress and concentrate on one decision at a time. But splitting a short form into many screens adds navigation without removing work. Conversely, putting every field on one long page can make the task feel unwieldy. Let the information customers genuinely need to provide determine the screens.

Audit the whole flow, not just the first screen
Count every field customers encounter from cart to order review, including fields that appear conditionally. Baymard reported an average of 11.3 checkout fields in its 2024 benchmark and said most checkouts need only eight. Treat that as a benchmark finding, not a universal limit: the right set depends on what is needed to take payment and fulfill the particular order.

- For every field, ask whether it is required for payment, delivery, tax, or another necessary order task.
- Remove information you do not use, and avoid asking customers to enter the same information twice.
- Keep optional details out of the main path until relevant. For example, reveal address line 2 or coupon entry only when a customer needs it.
- Where it suits the order, use one name field rather than separate first- and last-name fields, and use the shipping address as the billing address by default.
- Consider offering account creation after the order rather than making it a prerequisite to checkout.
Baymard’s 2024 update drew on more than 200 qualitative usability sessions across 16 sites, identified 1,350+ medium-to-severe issues, and produced 110+ new or updated guidelines. That work offers detailed usability evidence, not a randomized test proving that any one change will produce a particular conversion lift.
Make each step clear and recoverable
Use labels that tell customers what to enter, and explain validation errors in terms of how to correct them. Preserve answers when a customer fixes an error so they do not have to repeat earlier work. Let users review or correct previous information, and make progress through the flow understandable rather than surprising.
Do not treat an analytics drop-off as an explanation. A spike in exits on the address screen may point to a problem, but it cannot by itself tell you whether the cause was an unclear label, an early validation message, an unexpected delivery charge, or something else. Pair step-level completion and error data with observation of people using the checkout.

How should guest checkout be presented?
At account selection, make guest checkout easy to see and use. Baymard recommends giving the guest option the most prominent placement rather than burying it as a low-salience link. Its 2025 benchmark article reports that 18% of 1,026 surveyed US adults who had shopped online in the prior three months said they had abandoned an order because they did not want to create an account.
Do not make registration look mandatory if it is not. If an account offers a useful benefit, explain it without obstructing the guest path. Account creation can also be offered after the purchase, when it no longer blocks order completion.
Does a multi-step checkout convert better than a one-page checkout?
The available evidence does not establish a universal conversion winner. Baymard’s findings support prioritizing field burden over step count; they do not prove that one-page checkout always beats multi-step checkout, or vice versa. Compare the formats using the same customer tasks and devices, and check whether people can complete the order, understand progress, correct earlier answers, and see costs and delivery choices before committing.

When evaluating a single page, accordion, or multi-step flow, compare:
- How many fields are visible and required across the entire flow.
- Whether progress is clear and earlier answers can be reviewed or corrected.
- Whether errors are prevented where possible and corrected answers persist.
- When shipping costs, delivery choices, and the final order total become clear.
- How much typing and navigation the flow requires on a phone as well as a desktop.
- Completion and error rates by step, alongside usability observation that helps explain the numbers.
How should teams find and prioritize checkout problems?
Separate form friction from other abandonment causes
Checkout complexity is one reason people abandon an order, not the explanation for every abandoned cart. In data reported by Baymard in an article updated February 2, 2025, 17% of surveyed US online shoppers said they had abandoned an order in the prior quarter because checkout was too long or complicated. In the same study, 42% said they had abandoned a cart in the prior three months because they were browsing or not ready to buy. Additional costs can also deter customers independently of form design.
Segment abandonment reasons rather than treating all exits as a checkout usability failure. Baymard also estimated a 35.26% potential conversion-rate increase for the average large ecommerce site if checkout usability issues identified in its research were fixed. This is a research-based potential estimate, not a guaranteed result or a prediction for a particular redesign.

Test complete journeys on desktop and mobile
Review the path from cart to order confirmation, not isolated form screens. Baymard’s 2025 benchmark covers leading ecommerce sites in the US and Europe and reports 41,000+ manually reviewed checkout performance scores and 33,000+ categorized examples. In that benchmark, 64% of desktop sites, 63% of mobile sites, and 46% of apps rated mediocre or worse for checkout UX. These are results for Baymard’s benchmark sample, not universal rates for all stores.
Test realistic purchase tasks on the devices customers use. Include guest checkout, address entry, payment, error correction, order review, and confirmation. A flow that looks compact on a large screen may demand too much typing or scrolling on a phone.
What fields can I remove from checkout?
Remove a field when it is not needed to complete payment or fulfill the order, or when the information can be supplied in a less burdensome way. Common candidates to reconsider include duplicate billing details, separate name fields where a combined field is suitable, optional address line 2 shown to everyone, a coupon field displayed whether or not a customer has a code, and account creation required before purchase.
Do not remove a field solely to hit a benchmark number. Check the actual needs of the order and the consequences of omitting the information. The goal is to avoid making every customer inspect or complete irrelevant fields while still collecting what the transaction requires.
