You can steer ChatGPT toward a more neutral, concise voice, but there is no documented “stop acting human” switch. Use its personality and style controls for broad preferences, then give specific instructions for the task at hand. These settings affect how ChatGPT communicates—not what it can do or which safety rules it follows.
What “less human” means in practice
Here, “less human” means less warmth, small talk, conversational framing, or language that sounds like simulated personal feeling or experience. It does not mean changing ChatGPT’s underlying capabilities, or turning off a separate human-like mode. OpenAI describes personality as the style and tone ChatGPT uses, and says changing it does not change what ChatGPT can do or the safety rules it follows. See OpenAI’s guide to customizing ChatGPT’s personality.
That distinction matters: a style preference can guide wording, but it is not a guarantee that every response or generated document will use the same voice.

Pick a personality preset
OpenAI’s Help Center lists Default, Professional, Friendly, Candid, Quirky, Efficient, and Cynical personalities. For a less conversational starting point, Professional is described as polished and precise, while Efficient is concise and plain. These are broad style choices; the labels and availability can change, so check the current ChatGPT settings rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

Adjust characteristics
ChatGPT also offers more granular controls for characteristics such as warmth, enthusiasm, formatting, and emoji use. You can nudge the available characteristics toward “more” or “less.” These preferences work alongside personality, custom instructions, and memories, and ChatGPT will try to follow them; they are guidance rather than a promise of identical wording in every answer. The current controls are described in OpenAI’s guide to characteristics in ChatGPT.
Give it a precise instruction
A direct instruction can make the goal clearer than a vague request to sound less human. For example, try this in a chat:

Use neutral, direct wording. Skip simulated feelings, small talk, and claims of personal experience. Answer the task fully, and use the format I request.
This is a suggested instruction, not a verified guarantee. For a single answer, include it in that request. For a preference you want to reuse, put it in custom instructions. OpenAI Academy recommends using custom instructions for stable preferences and the prompt for the specific task; its custom-instructions guidance explains the distinction.

Custom instructions can describe your role, preferred tone, output format, or guardrails. OpenAI says they can be edited or removed and are available on web, desktop, iOS, and Android; consult the Help Center article on custom instructions for current details. If you want a preference limited to a particular workspace or assistant, instructions can also be configured for a project or custom GPT. OpenAI Academy’s custom GPT guidance recommends describing the role, voice, format, or audience—for example, asking for neutral technical language.

Why the requested voice may change
Personality does not necessarily control the tone of every artifact ChatGPT writes. If you ask for an email, résumé, social post, or code snippet, the task’s expected format and context may shape the output instead. Memories or custom instructions that pull in a different direction can also reduce or override the visible traits of a selected personality. That is why the same general setting can sound different across tasks.
Personalization behavior can also change over time. OpenAI’s release notes say that on November 7, 2025, personalization changes began applying immediately across existing chats as well as new ones. That describes a dated product change, not a guarantee about how future versions will behave: OpenAI’s ChatGPT release notes.

Which control should you use?
| Control | Best for | How specific it is |
|---|---|---|
| Personality | A broad tone preference | Preset choices, such as Professional or Efficient |
| Characteristics | Fine-tuning named style dimensions | Nudges for warmth, enthusiasm, formatting, and emoji use |
| Custom instructions | Preferences you want ChatGPT to apply across chats | Natural-language guidance on role, tone, format, or guardrails |
| Prompt for the current task | A specific request or deliverable | Natural-language direction scoped to that request |
| Project or custom GPT instructions | A preferred voice or format within that configured context | Natural-language direction for the project or GPT |
These controls can work together. A broad preset sets a starting point; characteristics adjust selected dimensions; instructions add the behaviors you care about. If a particular output still sounds too conversational, state the preference in the request that produces it.
