Reliable AI citations require two separate actions: make the assistant use live search or a grounding tool when the answer depends on current information, then open every cited source and check that it actually supports the specific claim. A carefully written prompt improves citation placement and exposes uncertainty, but it cannot force a model to retrieve a real source or prevent fabricated, outdated, or irrelevant references.
The workflow below covers the current documented controls for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, including the important distinction between consumer apps and APIs. Interface labels, plan limits, workspace policies, models, and grounding options can change, so treat the platform instructions as current guidance rather than permanent UI guarantees.
The reliable-citation workflow
Use this sequence whenever accuracy matters:
- Activate retrieval. Ask for current information and explicitly request web search, or enable the platform’s search or grounding tool.
- Define what needs a citation. Require a source beside each factual claim that depends on external evidence, not one bibliography at the end.
- Set source standards. Prefer primary or official sources, and ask for the page title, publisher, date, and exact URL.
- Give the model a safe failure response. Tell it to write “I could not verify this” when adequate support is unavailable.
- Audit the output. Open each link, read the relevant passage, check its date and scope, and mark claims that remain unsupported.
This distinction matters because a citation is a navigational lead, not proof. OpenAI’s help documentation warns that “Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect,” and separately advises: “Use ChatGPT as a first draft, not a final source.” The same verification discipline applies to the other assistants.

Search the web for current information where needed. Answer using reliable, preferably primary sources. Put a clickable citation next to every factual claim that depends on a source. For each source, give its title, publisher, publication or update date if available, and the exact page URL. Do not invent citations or claim a source says something unless you have checked the page. If you cannot find adequate support, say what is unverified and leave it out. If reliable sources disagree, show the disagreement and cite each major position.The prompt specifies five things models often leave ambiguous: when to search, which sources to prefer, which statements require citations, how to format the links, what to do when evidence is missing, and how to represent disagreement. It improves transparency; it does not guarantee that a search will run or that every citation is correct.
Make the request claim-sized
Broad requests encourage broad, weakly supported answers. Break a complex task into factual units and ask for evidence for each one. For example, request “the current eligibility rule, the date it changed, and the official page supporting each statement” rather than “explain the policy.” If you need analysis in addition to facts, label the boundary: ask the model to distinguish sourced facts, calculations, and its own interpretation.
Specify a source hierarchy
“Reliable” depends on the question. For a software setting, an official help page or API reference is usually the appropriate first source. For a regulation, use the government text. For a scientific result, look for the paper and, where useful, an institutional explanation. Ask the assistant to identify the source type so you can judge whether an official page is sufficient for an independent performance claim or a disputed issue.
How to get cited sources from ChatGPT
Consumer app: start a search
- Ask a question that needs current information, or open the tools menu and select Search to start a search manually.
- If you leave search automatic, phrase the request so the need for current evidence is explicit: include a date range, jurisdiction, version, or “as of” date.
- Include the reusable citation instruction and require a link beside each externally verifiable claim.
- When the answer arrives, select a citation to open its source. Use the Sources view, when it is available in your interface, to inspect the cited pages and related links.
- Read the page itself. Confirm the publication or update date, the relevant section, and whether the wording supports the exact claim rather than a weaker or different statement.
ChatGPT may search automatically when a question benefits from current information, but automatic behavior is not a promise that every response used live retrieval. Selecting Search manually is clearer when evidence is essential.
When Search is missing or behaves differently
Search access can depend on account type, plan limits, managed-workspace controls, usage limits, and the app or model version. If the control is absent, check the account or workspace administrator and the current usage information, then ask the assistant whether it actually searched. Do not treat a confident answer without visible source support as a searched answer.
API: enable web search in the Responses API
For API applications, OpenAI’s Responses API documentation describes adding web search to the request’s tools array. The model can decide whether to search based on the prompt. A response can contain inline citations and URL citation annotations that identify the source used for a span of text.

Build your application so the annotations remain attached to the text they support. Store the cited URL and the returned passage for audit logs, and display a clear “not verified” state when no usable annotation is returned. API configuration does not establish that every consumer ChatGPT account has the same tool or limits.

Consumer app: enable Web search
- Turn on the Web search control in the current Claude interface.
- When you need to ensure retrieval, write the literal instruction “Search the web” or “Use web search” in your prompt. Anthropic’s help guidance recommends this explicit wording.
- Ask for direct citations beside each factual statement and for a source title, publisher, date, and URL.
- Open the cited links and check the passage, date, and geographic or technical scope before using the answer.
Anthropic states that searched responses include direct citations and source links; its help page summarizes this as: “Every response includes citations, so you can easily verify sources yourself.” That sentence describes the searched-response workflow, not a guarantee that an unsourced conversation will contain citations.
Fetch one specific page
If you already know the page you want Claude to examine, provide its URL while Web search is enabled and ask Claude to summarize or extract only what that page supports. This is useful for checking a known policy, release note, or technical reference. Still open the page yourself: successful retrieval does not eliminate the need to verify context.
API capabilities are separate
Anthropic’s May 7, 2025 announcement describes an API search tool that can retrieve live results, refine queries, and conduct progressive searches. The announcement was updated September 10, 2025 to mention web fetch. These are API capabilities; they should not be presented as proof that every consumer account exposes identical controls, limits, or citation formatting.
How to turn on Gemini Search grounding
Gemini API applications
- Configure the Gemini API request with the
google_searchtool for Search grounding. - Ask for current information and specify the date, location, version, or other scope that determines whether a source is relevant.
- Read the response text together with its inline citation annotations. The annotations associate portions of the answer with source URLs.
- Follow each annotation to the source and verify that the cited passage supports the associated text.
Google’s Gemini API documentation describes a process in which the model evaluates whether search could improve the answer, runs one or more queries when appropriate, and returns text with inline annotations linked to sources. Enabling google_search therefore gives the application a grounding mechanism; it does not mean every sentence will be independently proven.
Do not generalize API instructions to the consumer app
The documented grounding workflow is specific to Gemini API applications. It does not establish the exact steps, controls, account eligibility, or regional availability of every Gemini consumer interface. In a consumer product, use whatever search or source controls the current interface exposes, then apply the same link-by-link verification process.

The table compares documented mechanics, not citation accuracy. No platform is established here as universally more reliable, and no independent success rate is available for that conclusion.
How to verify an AI citation
- Open the destination. A visible link can still be broken, redirected, paywalled, or unrelated to the claim.
- Find the supporting passage. Search within the page for the key term, number, date, or definition. Read surrounding paragraphs, footnotes, tables, and exceptions.
- Match scope. Check that the source covers the same country, population, product edition, software version, time period, and unit as the answer.
- Check recency. A current-looking URL may contain old information. Record the publication or update date and compare it with the date requested in your question.
- Check source authority. Prefer the original law, standard, paper, vendor documentation, or dataset over a summary when the original is available.
- Look for overreach. The source may support “can” while the answer says “always,” or describe a limited test while the answer claims general performance.
- Compare important disagreements. Ask for each credible position and its supporting source instead of forcing the model to choose silently.
- Label unresolved claims. If no source adequately supports a statement, remove it or mark it as unverified rather than preserving a plausible guess.
Use a claim-to-source audit
For consequential work, make a small audit table with four columns: the exact claim, the cited URL, the supporting quotation or section, and your status (supported, partly supported, outdated, or unresolved). This catches citation drift, where a link is real but does not support the sentence next to it. It also makes later updates easier because you can replace only the stale source.
Common citation failures and fixes
The model gives a link that does not exist
Tell it not to invent URLs and to say that the claim is unverified when it cannot find a page. Ask for a new search using the organization’s official domain and a distinctive phrase from the claim. If the replacement link still fails, treat the claim as unsupported.
The link exists but does not prove the sentence
Ask the assistant to quote the exact supporting passage and explain how it entails the claim. Then inspect the passage yourself. Narrow the wording to what the source actually establishes, or find a stronger primary source.
The citation is outdated
Add an explicit cutoff such as “information current as of October 2026” and require the update date. For software, include the product version; for rules, include the jurisdiction and effective date. A current search can still retrieve an old page, so the date check remains necessary.
The answer mixes fact and inference
Request separate labels for sourced facts, calculations, assumptions, and conclusions. Cite the input facts, show the calculation, and do not present the model’s interpretation as if a source stated it.

Sources disagree
Ask the model to show the disagreement, identify why the sources differ, and cite each major position. Check whether the conflict comes from different dates, definitions, jurisdictions, samples, or methodological standards before deciding which applies.

The assistant did not search
Restate the need for live retrieval, use the platform’s search control, and ask the assistant to identify which claims were answered from retrieved sources. If search is unavailable because of account, workspace, plan, limit, or API configuration, use a source you can inspect directly instead of treating model memory as current evidence.

Current product or policy facts
Specify the product edition, region, effective date, and official-source preference. Ask for one citation per changed rule or feature, not a general link to a home page.
Technical explanations
Request primary documentation first, then ask the model to distinguish documented behavior from an inferred explanation. Include the software version, operating system, and configuration so a citation is not applied too broadly.
Research summaries
Ask for the paper, publisher, date, study population, methods, and limitations. Require the model to preserve uncertainty and to show credible studies that reach different conclusions.

Set a precise time window and ask for multiple independent, reputable reports. Verify the original announcement or filing where possible; a secondary article may describe an event without preserving the full context.

What citation prompts cannot guarantee
Stronger wording cannot force a model to retrieve a source, make a source authoritative, or ensure that every citation is complete. Search behavior depends on tool availability and configuration, and results can be incomplete, outdated, incorrect, or fabricated. Treat the assistant as a research aide that helps locate evidence, then make the final reliability judgment from the linked material.
Platform availability also changes. ChatGPT search may depend on account, workspace, and usage conditions; Claude distinguishes consumer Web search from API tools; Gemini’s documented grounding controls here are for API applications. Recheck the current platform documentation before publishing click-by-click instructions or making claims about plans, models, limits, or regional access.

No. Open the page, locate the passage, and confirm its date, scope, and wording support the exact claim. A working URL can still be irrelevant or outdated.
