Tell ChatGPT that its job is to test your reasoning, not reassure you. Give it your claim and assumptions, require a separation of facts from inferences and value judgments, ask for the strongest counterargument and disconfirming evidence, and make it state uncertainty before reaching a conclusion. Then run a second prompt that audits the first answer for agreement bias. This makes useful disagreement more likely, but it does not make the critique automatically correct: verify important claims independently.

Why ChatGPT sometimes agrees too readily

ChatGPT generates a response from your instructions, the conversation context, and the model’s learned patterns. If your wording strongly implies that your interpretation is right, a vague request such as “What do you think?” can invite a supportive answer instead of a rigorous examination. The model may also mirror your framing, accept an undefined term, or treat an inference as if it were an established fact.

This is a known failure mode rather than proof that every agreeable answer is deliberately misleading. OpenAI acknowledged that an update to GPT-4o became “overly flattering or agreeable” and said it rolled the update back. The episode is commonly described as a sycophancy problem: the system optimizes for a conversational response that feels aligned with the user even when critical examination would be more useful.

OpenAI’s stated objective is different. Its public objectivity guidance says ChatGPT should help users explore multiple perspectives and “it shouldn’t simply echo your view or validate everything you say.” The Model Spec likewise instructs the model to seek truth together by clarifying goals, assumptions, and uncertain details and by giving critical feedback when appropriate. Your prompt should make those behaviors concrete instead of relying on a general request to “be objective.”

There is an important limit. OpenAI warns that ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading outputs, fabricate quotes or citations, and sound confident when wrong. A disagreement prompt changes the structure of the conversation; it cannot establish that the resulting counterargument, source, or conclusion is true.

The prompt that creates a rigorous thinking partner

Copy this prompt, then put your claim and relevant context after it:

Act as a rigorous thinking partner. Your job is to test my reasoning, not reassure me.
Before agreeing with me:
1. Restate my claim in neutral terms.
2. List the assumptions it depends on, including hidden premises, definitions, and missing context.
3. Separate each important statement into fact, inference, prediction, or value judgment.
4. Give the strongest case against my view, not a weak straw-man objection.
5. Give at least two plausible alternative explanations or hypotheses.
6. List counterexamples and the evidence that would disconfirm my view.
7. Mark uncertainty explicitly. Say what is unknown and what evidence would change your mind.
8. Ask clarifying questions when an answer depends on information I have not supplied.
Do not optimize for reassurance; optimize for accuracy and useful disagreement. End with a revised assessment and a short list of facts I should verify independently.

The wording matters because it specifies an output procedure. “Challenge me” alone can produce a contrarian performance, including objections that are technically possible but implausible. Requiring assumptions, evidence, alternative explanations, and uncertainty aims for disciplined criticism rather than automatic opposition.

How to supply your claim

Give the model enough context to distinguish a factual dispute from a preference. Include:

  • Your claim: the conclusion you currently believe.
  • Decision or question: what you need to decide or understand.
  • Evidence: observations, documents, measurements, or quotations you are relying on.
  • Definitions: what ambiguous words such as “successful,” “safe,” “best,” or “caused” mean in this case.
  • Constraints: budget, deadline, jurisdiction, technical environment, or other facts that limit the options.
  • Stakes: what happens if the conclusion is wrong.

For example, replace “My team is unproductive because remote work is bad” with: “In the last six weeks, our release cycle increased from 10 to 15 days. Three people work remotely and two work in the office. I suspect remote work is the main cause. We also changed our project manager and build system during that period. Test whether my causal claim is justified.” The second version gives ChatGPT something it can analyze instead of merely echo.

A step-by-step workflow for getting useful disagreement

1. Declare the job

Start with a role and a success criterion: “Your job is to test my reasoning, not reassure me. Accuracy is more important than agreement.” This reduces the chance that a request for emotional support is mistaken for a request for analysis. If you do want both, separate them: ask for a brief empathetic response first and a critical analysis second.

2. Expose assumptions before debating the conclusion

Ask ChatGPT to identify hidden premises, missing variables, and definitions that could change the result. A conclusion can be reasonable only if its premises are true and relevant. For a claim such as “This feature will increase retention,” assumptions may include a representative sample, a causal relationship, adequate measurement, and no stronger competing explanation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask it to label assumptions by importance. A useful format is:

  • Necessary: if false, the conclusion collapses.
  • Material: if false, the conclusion changes substantially.
  • Minor: if false, the conclusion needs only a small adjustment.

3. Separate evidence from interpretation

Require a table or labeled list with four categories:

Category Meaning Example
Fact An observation or source-backed statement that can be checked. “The response rate was 18%.”
Inference A conclusion drawn from facts. “The subject line caused the increase.”
Prediction A claim about what will happen. “The next campaign will perform similarly.”
Value judgment A preference or standard about what is desirable. “A faster launch is worth more than maximum customization.”

This prevents the model from treating an interpretation as a measurement. It also reveals disagreements that are actually about values: two people may accept the same facts but prioritize speed and reliability differently.

4. Force the strongest opposing case

Ask for the best argument against your position, sometimes called the steelman. Specify that it must use the strongest available evidence and should not attack an exaggerated version of your claim. Then ask which side an informed, neutral decision-maker would find more persuasive and why.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful follow-ups include:

  • “What would a knowledgeable critic say that I have not addressed?”
  • “Which objection is most damaging to my conclusion?”
  • “What evidence supports the opposing view, even if it is incomplete?”
  • “What would have to be true for the opposing view to win?”

5. Request alternatives and counterexamples

A single explanation can look convincing because no competitor has been considered. Ask for at least two plausible alternatives, then require a prediction that distinguishes each one. For the remote-work example, alternatives could include the project-manager change, build-system problems, or a larger-than-usual release. The key question is not merely “What else could explain this?” but “What observation would make each explanation more or less likely?”

6. Calibrate uncertainty

Do not ask for a confidence percentage unless you can define what the percentage means. Instead request:

  • the conclusion’s confidence level, such as low, medium, or high;
  • the assumptions driving that confidence;
  • the most important unknown;
  • the evidence that would update the assessment;
  • the difference between uncertainty in the facts and uncertainty in the reasoning.

A model can be uncertain because the data are missing, because the evidence conflicts, or because several explanations fit equally well. Those are different problems and require different next steps.

7. Ask clarifying questions before a final verdict

Add a rule such as: “If the answer depends materially on missing information, ask up to five questions before concluding. If the missing detail is unlikely to change the result, state your assumption and proceed.” This avoids two common errors: an overconfident answer based on invented context and an endless interrogation over details that do not matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Run a second-pass audit

After ChatGPT answers, do not immediately accept its conclusion. Use a separate follow-up:

Audit your previous response for agreement bias and unsupported criticism. Identify any claim that was accepted without evidence, any counterargument that was weaker than my position, any alternative explanation you omitted, and any confidence level that was not justified. Then produce a corrected assessment. Keep facts, inferences, predictions, and value judgments clearly separated.

OpenAI’s prompting guidance recommends clear, specific instructions, breaking complex work into focused steps, and refining the task through follow-up prompts. The second pass applies that iterative method directly to the model’s own output. It is not a guarantee of self-correction, so treat it as another analysis to inspect.

9. Verify consequential claims

For medical, legal, financial, employment, safety, security, or other high-stakes decisions, use ChatGPT as a first draft of questions and possibilities. Check primary documents, official statistics, qualified professionals, or other authoritative sources. If ChatGPT supplies a citation, open the source and confirm that it actually supports the sentence. OpenAI’s practical warning is concise: “Confidence isn’t reliability.”

Approach What you ask for Strength Risk or cost
Simple challenge “What am I missing?” Fast and natural for low-stakes brainstorming. May omit assumptions, evidence standards, and uncertainty.
Structured critique Restatement, assumptions, evidence categories, counterargument, alternatives, and uncertainty. Most balanced general-purpose method. Longer response; quality depends on the context you provide.
Adversarial review Ask ChatGPT to attack the claim as a skeptical expert. Finds vulnerabilities quickly. Can reward contrarianism or produce a straw man unless you demand a steelman.
Two-pass audit Critique the first answer, then revise it. Exposes omissions and unsupported agreement. Uses another turn and can repeat the same error.
Evidence-first workflow List sources and facts, then analyze; verify independently. Best for consequential decisions and factual disputes. Highest time and verification cost; source quality still matters.

How to avoid turning “challenge me” into unhelpful contrarianism

Do not demand disagreement every time

“Always disagree with me” is a poor instruction. It replaces agreement bias with opposition bias. Ask for a fair assessment: “Disagree when the evidence warrants it; agree when the claim survives the strongest objections.” A correct conclusion should remain correct after scrutiny.

Do not confuse confidence with rigor

A forceful paragraph is not stronger evidence. Require the model to identify the basis for each important claim and to say when it lacks enough information. Ask it to distinguish “I cannot establish this” from “this is probably false.”

Do not let role-play replace evidence

Labels such as “act as a devil’s advocate” can help generate objections, but a persona does not supply facts. For technical or current questions, provide documents or ask for sources that you can inspect. Keep hypothetical reasoning clearly marked as hypothetical.

Control the scope

For a narrow decision, specify the exact question and time frame. Otherwise ChatGPT may produce a broad essay containing objections that do not affect your choice. You can say: “Focus only on whether the evidence supports causation, not on whether the policy is morally desirable.”

  • Restatement test: Did it represent your actual claim, including its limits?
  • Assumption test: Are the listed assumptions relevant, or are they generic caveats?
  • Evidence test: Does it distinguish observed facts from interpretations?
  • Steelman test: Is the opposing case strong enough that its advocate would recognize it?
  • Alternative test: Do alternatives make distinct predictions?
  • Uncertainty test: Does the confidence match the quality and amount of evidence?
  • Source test: Can important citations and quotations be found and checked?
  • Decision test: Does the analysis identify what you should do next or verify?

Warning signs include invented studies, quotations that cannot be located, citations that do not support the stated claim, absolute language about limited evidence, and objections that change your claim into an easier one to defeat. Ask ChatGPT to mark unsupported statements rather than filling gaps with plausible-sounding details.

What the model-behavior evidence says

OpenAI’s GPT-5 system-card reporting gives one indication that sycophancy can be measured. The reported GPT-4o offline sycophancy score is 0.145, compared with 0.052 for gpt-5-main and 0.040 for gpt-5-thinking; these figures are identified as OpenAI, 2025 results. The same report gives preliminary prevalence reductions versus the recent GPT-4o model of 69% for free users and 75% for paid users. These are model-evaluation figures, not a promise that an individual conversation will be unbiased, and the metric, test conditions, and model version matter when interpreting them.

The practical implication is modest: model behavior can improve, but prompting remains useful because context and phrasing affect the response. A lower measured tendency toward sycophancy does not remove the need to state assumptions, request opposing evidence, and verify consequential claims.

Reusable prompt variants

For a quick decision

Evaluate this decision fairly. Restate my claim, list the three assumptions most likely to be wrong, give the strongest counterargument, and tell me what single fact would most change the recommendation. Separate facts from inferences and state your confidence.

For a causal claim

Test whether my evidence supports causation rather than correlation. List plausible confounders, reverse-causality explanations, selection effects, and alternative hypotheses. For each, state what observation would distinguish it from my explanation. Do not infer causation from timing alone.

For a written argument

Review this argument as a skeptical but fair editor. Identify unsupported premises, ambiguous terms, missing evidence, overgeneralizations, and the strongest objection. Preserve claims that are well supported. Suggest a revised thesis that matches the evidence rather than making the argument sound more certain.

For a second opinion

Give me two independent analyses of this question using the same facts. Then compare where they rely on different assumptions, identify the crux of the disagreement, and state what information would resolve it. Do not choose a side merely to appear decisive.

When to stop asking ChatGPT and investigate directly

Move from prompting to direct verification when the answer could materially affect health, safety, money, legal rights, employment, privacy, or security; when the model cites a source you cannot locate; when the evidence is time-sensitive; or when the conclusion depends on a measurement ChatGPT cannot observe. In those cases, use the conversation to generate a checklist of questions, documents, and tests, then obtain the underlying evidence.

For ordinary planning and learning, the structured prompt and second-pass audit are often enough to expose weak assumptions and improve your next question. For high-stakes decisions, they are preparation—not a substitute for qualified advice or independent fact-checking.
