To make a blurry picture clearer, first identify whether the softness comes from missed focus, movement, or a small, compressed image. Use Photoshop sharpening for mild softness; try a restoration or upscaling tool for stronger blur or enlargement. Neither approach can reliably recover detail that was never captured, and AI may create plausible-looking details that were not in the original.
How to choose a fix for a blurry picture
Look at the image at 100% magnification and inspect how the blur appears. Soft edges across the image can point to focus or lens softness; directional streaking may indicate camera or subject movement; blockiness or visible pixels often comes from enlargement or compression. These clues guide your next step, but they do not guarantee that lost detail can be restored.

Before editing, keep an untouched copy. If the image contains faces, text, or evidence that must remain faithful to the source, compare every enhancement with the original and do not treat reconstructed details as proof.

How to sharpen a photo with Photoshop Unsharp Mask
Unsharp Mask is a practical choice when the photo is only mildly soft and has details that are already in focus. Adobe Learn instructor Jan Kabili puts the limit plainly: “Did you know that sharpening does not fix a blurry photo nor bring unfocused areas into focus?” The filter makes existing edges appear more defined; it cannot reliably restore missed focus.

- Keep the edit reversible. In Photoshop, select the photo layer and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object. Adobe recommends this before applying Unsharp Mask so you can revisit its settings.
- Open the filter. Choose Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask.
- Adjust while viewing at 100%. Use Amount to control sharpening strength and Radius to set the width of the edge contrast. Increase them cautiously and look for halos along high-contrast edges.
- Protect smooth or grainy areas. Adjust Threshold to keep the filter from emphasizing small tonal changes such as grain or smooth-area texture.
- Compare with the original. Toggle the effect off and on, then check at both 100% and the size at which the image will normally be viewed. Keep the subtler result if extra crispness comes with halos or harsher noise.

For a RAW file, try Camera Raw Super Resolution
Adobe documents Super Resolution as a Camera Raw enhancement for RAW images. It is a better fit for enlarging a RAW source than applying ordinary edge sharpening when the main issue is limited pixel dimensions. It is not a general repair method for every JPEG or blurred raster image.

- Open the RAW image in Camera Raw.
- Right-click the image and choose Enhance.
- Select Super Resolution and review the preview.
- Apply the enhancement and save the result. Adobe’s guide says the enhanced file is saved as a DNG.

AI tools are worth comparing when blur is stronger than a modest sharpening adjustment can handle, or when the image needs to be enlarged. Their outputs can look more convincing than a simple edge filter, but convincing is not the same as faithful: a model may synthesize facial features, lettering, hair, or repeated patterns.

Topaz Photo sharpening models
Topaz describes Standard as suited to slight lens or motion blur and Strong for very blurry or out-of-focus images. It also documents separate Lens Blur and Motion Blur models. The vendor recommends trying Standard before Strong to reduce the risk of over-sharpening and unwanted artifacts. If noise is prominent, denoise before sharpening because sharpening can accentuate noise. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independent test results; the documentation page does not establish a specific software version.

Adobe’s documentation, dated May 20, 2026, says Photoshop Generative Upscale offers 2x or 4x scaling. It lists Firefly Upscaler, Topaz Gigapixel, and Topaz Bloom with different output limits and approaches:

How to check whether the result is genuinely better
Inspect the processed image at 100% for technical defects, then view it at normal display size to judge whether the overall result looks natural. Focus on details most likely to reveal processing problems:
- Faces: compare eyes, teeth, skin, and other identity-sensitive features with the original.
- Text: check that letters remain legible and have not been invented or reshaped.
- Hair and fine texture: look for waxy surfaces, clumps, or artificial patterns.
- Edges and repeated patterns: watch for halos, doubled contours, and distorted lines.
- Noise: check whether sharpening has made grain more prominent.
If the image’s context requires fidelity, disclose AI reconstruction as enhancement or reconstruction where appropriate. When the processed image does not hold up against the original, reduce the effect or return to the untouched copy.
