Most Bluetooth headphone problems on Android are fixed before you touch an equalizer. Check that the headphones are actually carrying media, confirm both sides are loud enough, then test a codec your phone and headphones genuinely support. Only after those checks should you try EQ or Spatial Audio. If the sound is still muffled, distorted, delayed, or unstable, the headphones, their fit, or the Bluetooth connection may be the limiting factor.
Start with the checks that fix the most common problems
Work through these checks in order. They take only a few minutes and prevent you from changing a codec or EQ to compensate for audio that is simply routed incorrectly.
Raise both volume controls
Play a familiar track and raise the media volume on the phone. Then use the buttons or touch controls on the headphones to raise their own volume. Some accessories maintain a separate internal level, so a phone showing a high volume setting does not always mean the headphones are loud.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDo not judge sound quality at an extremely low level. Quiet playback can make bass and detail seem absent, while excessive volume can make distortion more obvious and risks hearing damage. Use a comfortable level for comparisons and keep that level consistent while testing.

Make sure another paired device is not playing the media
A phone can remain paired with several accessories. Open the phone’s connected-device or Bluetooth page and look at the currently connected device. Pause playback, disconnect speakers, cars, tablets, or other headphones, and start the track again. If the wrong device is selected, changing codecs or equalization on the intended headphones will have no effect.
Confirm the Media audio switch
Open the connected-device settings for the headphones and confirm that Media audio is enabled. Android menu wording varies by manufacturer and software release, but the switch is normally inside the settings page for that Bluetooth accessory. If Media audio is off, the headphones may still appear connected for calls while music continues through the phone speaker or another output.
Reconnect and restart
- Turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
- Confirm the headphones show as paired and connected, not merely saved in the phone’s list.
- Power-cycle the headphones.
- Restart the phone if the connection or output remains wrong.
Custom Android interfaces can place these controls in different menus. If a label or route is different on your phone, look for the accessory’s Bluetooth settings under Connected devices, Bluetooth, or a similarly named section.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What Bluetooth codecs change—and what they cannot do
A Bluetooth codec determines how audio is encoded for the wireless link. A different codec can alter the balance between compression, latency, battery use, and resistance to interference, but selecting a higher-sounding name does not guarantee an audible improvement. The phone and headphones must both implement the codec, and the connection must be able to sustain it.
Android Developers states: “The actual mandatory codec type for Android Bluetooth audio is SBC.” SBC is therefore the compatibility baseline. Optional codecs are available only when the required hardware and software exist on both ends of the connection.

| Codec or control | What Android documentation identifies | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| SBC | Mandatory Android Bluetooth audio codec | Fallback compatibility option; sound quality depends on the implementation and settings. |
| AAC | Listed in Android’s Bluetooth Audio Codec developer control | Selectable only when the phone and headphones support it; the result is device-dependent. |
| aptX | Listed as an optional codec | Requires support on both devices; do not force it when it is not available. |
| aptX HD | Listed as an optional codec | Requires compatible implementations on both devices; a name alone does not establish better audible quality. |
| LDAC | Listed as an optional codec with several quality and connection modes | Can trade sound-quality priority for connection stability; the best mode depends on interference and distance. |
The exact list shown on your phone can be shorter than this table. Firmware, phone hardware, headphone hardware, Android version, and regional or manufacturer choices all affect availability.
How to test the Bluetooth Audio Codec setting
Android exposes codec controls in Developer options, but the route and behavior vary by device. Developer options are advanced settings: change one item at a time and record the original value so you can undo it.
- Open Settings and find About phone or the equivalent device-information page.
- Tap Build number repeatedly until Android confirms that Developer options are enabled. The exact number of taps and security prompt can vary by manufacturer.
- Return to Settings and open System, Additional settings, or the manufacturer’s equivalent, then open Developer options.
- Scroll to the Bluetooth section and open Bluetooth Audio Codec.
- Connect the headphones before testing. Choose an option that is shown as supported rather than forcing an unavailable codec.
- Play the same familiar passage for several minutes. Listen for tonal changes, dropouts, clicks, and delayed audio.
- Disconnect and reconnect the headphones if the selection does not appear to take effect, then check the active codec again.
Developer options also exposes Bluetooth sample-rate, bits-per-sample, channel-mode, and codec-toggle controls. Leave these at their defaults unless you have a specific compatibility reason to change them. A larger number in a menu is not proof of better audible quality, and an unsupported combination can cause Android to fall back to another setting.
Choosing an LDAC mode
Android’s developer documentation describes LDAC choices that prioritize audio quality, balance audio and connection quality, prioritize connection quality, or use an adaptive bitrate. These are trade-offs, not a universal ranking.
- Audio-quality priority: Try it only when the headphones remain stable in your normal listening location.
- Balanced: A sensible starting point when you want quality without immediately favoring either extreme.
- Connection-quality priority: Use it when you hear skips, pauses, or repeated reconnections.
- Adaptive bitrate: Lets the link adjust within the implementation’s supported range as conditions change.
Interference from distance, walls, crowded wireless environments, or a body blocking the antenna can make a quality-focused mode unreliable. If interruptions begin after a codec change, restore the previous codec or select a more connection-focused LDAC mode. A clean, continuous stream is usually preferable to a nominally higher setting that keeps breaking up.

Use equalization without chasing a universal “best” curve
There is no single Android equalizer menu or EQ curve that applies to every phone and headphone. Some phones include audio effects in their sound settings; some headphone models provide EQ only in the manufacturer’s companion app; others expose no user EQ at all. Use the controls that actually appear on your device rather than following a menu path from a different Android skin.

A safe way to tune
- Open the phone’s sound or audio-effects controls, or the connected headphones’ companion app if that model provides one.
- Start with the original or flat setting and save it as a reference.
- Choose familiar recordings with vocals, bass, and cymbals. Use several tracks rather than one heavily produced song.
- Move one band by a small amount, then listen for at least a minute. Large boosts can create clipping, harshness, or a boomy result.
- Compare the adjustment with the original at the same volume. Keep the change only if it improves the problem you were trying to solve.
- Disable other sound effects while evaluating EQ so you know which control caused a change.
EQ cannot repair a loose ear-tip seal, a damaged driver, a bad recording, or Bluetooth dropouts. If a boost makes the headphones louder but not clearer, undo it and continue diagnosing the underlying issue.
When Spatial Audio helps—and when it does not
Spatial Audio is an optional immersive effect, not a general remedy for muffled, distorted, quiet, or unstable Bluetooth playback. It requires a supported phone or tablet, compatible headphones, and content encoded for the feature.
Google documents Spatial Audio for specified Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet models. Its instructions say that supported movies or television shows need a 5.1-or-higher audio track. On a supported Pixel device, the headphone setup is found under Settings → Sound & vibration → Spatial audio, with wireless headphones configured through their connected-device settings. Supported model lists can change as Google updates its documentation, so check the current list for your exact phone and accessory.
Google’s Pixel Buds instructions are narrower still: head-tracked Spatial Audio requires Pixel Buds Pro or Pro 2 paired with a Pixel 6 or newer, and head tracking is off by default. That product-specific requirement should not be generalized to every Android phone or Bluetooth headphone.

Test it as an effect, not a repair
- Verify that both the phone and headphones are on the supported-model list for the feature.
- Use a movie or show with a compatible multichannel track; ordinary stereo music may not demonstrate the intended effect.
- Enable Spatial Audio from the phone’s sound settings and, where required, the connected-device settings for the headphones.
- Compare the same scene with the feature on and off. Keep it enabled only if you prefer the presentation and it does not introduce unwanted processing or delay.
Improve the connection before blaming sound quality
Codec settings cannot overcome a poor radio link. Keep the phone and headphones reasonably close during testing, avoid placing the phone where your body or a bag blocks the connection, and temporarily move away from sources of heavy wireless congestion. If the sound improves when you are close to the phone but degrades at your usual distance, stability—not EQ—is the main issue.
- Test with the headphones fully charged and with any available firmware update applied through their companion app.
- Disconnect unused Bluetooth accessories while diagnosing a problem.
- Stop downloads or other activity that makes it difficult to tell whether interruptions are caused by the link or the audio app.
- Try a second app or a locally stored track. If only one service sounds wrong, investigate that app’s quality, normalization, or download settings rather than changing Bluetooth.
These checks identify a pattern; they do not prove that a particular codec or wireless technology is superior in every environment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know when the headphones or fit are the limiting factor
In-ear headphones depend heavily on a proper seal. A loose or incorrectly sized ear tip can remove bass and make outside noise dominate, which may be mistaken for a codec problem. Reseat each earbud and try the supplied tip sizes if your model includes them. Clean the speaker openings according to the manufacturer’s instructions; blocked openings can reduce output or change the tonal balance.
Persistent crackling in one side, imbalance that follows the headphone rather than the ear, or sound that remains poor on multiple phones points toward an accessory fault. If the headphones sound normal on another source but not on your Android phone, return to routing, codec compatibility, and phone-specific settings.
Google’s Sound Amplifier guidance warns that some Bluetooth headphones can produce delayed or lower-quality audio with that accessibility feature. If you are using Sound Amplifier and quality falls, test with the feature off. When Android and connection checks do not resolve the problem, Google’s guidance supports trying another set or switching to wired headphones. That is a troubleshooting option, not a guarantee that every replacement will sound better.

A decision table for common symptoms
| What you hear or see | First checks | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| No music in the headphones | Correct output, Media audio enabled, headphones connected | Toggle Bluetooth, reconnect, and restart both devices. |
| Music is quiet | Phone and headphone volume, fit and seal | Try another track and check for blocked openings before changing codec. |
| Muffled or dull sound | Ear-tip seal, debris, app source, EQ effects | Compare flat EQ and another source; then test only supported codecs. |
| Crackles, skips, or pauses | Distance, interference, codec mode | Use a balanced or connection-focused LDAC mode, or return to the previous codec. |
| Audio and video are out of sync | App behavior and codec latency | Disable unnecessary effects and test a different codec or app; accept that some wireless combinations have unavoidable delay. |
| Spatial effect is missing | Supported phone, headphones, and content track | Confirm the feature’s current compatibility requirements; do not expect it on ordinary unsupported stereo playback. |
| Sound is worse only with Sound Amplifier | Accessibility feature state | Turn Sound Amplifier off for a comparison, then try another headset or wired headphones if needed. |
If you replace the headphones, compare the things that matter on Android
When basic fixes fail, choose replacements by compatibility and fit rather than by a codec label alone. The available documentation does not establish independent measurements, prices, or a ranked product list, so there is no evidence-based universal “best” model to name.
| Criterion | Questions to ask before buying |
|---|---|
| Fit and seal | Will the design stay sealed for your ears and intended activity? Are multiple tip sizes or an adjustment system included? |
| Sound profile and controls | Does the maker’s app provide an EQ or presets for your Android version? Can you save or disable the profile? |
| Codec compatibility | Does the phone support the codec, and does the headphone firmware implement it? Is SBC available as a fallback? |
| Feature compatibility | Are Spatial Audio, head tracking, multipoint, or accessibility features supported by this exact phone and model combination? |
| Reliability | Can you return the headphones if the fit, latency, or connection is unsuitable in your environment? |
A replacement is most justified when the same defect follows the headphones across devices, the fit cannot be corrected, or your current model lacks a feature you specifically need. It is less justified when the actual problem is a disabled Media audio switch or an incorrect output route.
A repeatable test that prevents false conclusions
- Choose one familiar, legally obtained track and one spoken-word or video clip.
- Set a comfortable, consistent volume and disable optional effects.
- Confirm the headphone output and Media audio state.
- Listen with the current codec for several minutes, noting clarity, bass, harshness, delay, and dropouts.
- Change only the codec, reconnect if necessary, and repeat the same passages.
- If a codec is stable, compare a small EQ adjustment; restore the original setting before testing another change.
- Test at your normal distance and in the places where you usually listen.
- Keep the setting that gives reliable playback and a sound you prefer, not merely the one with the most ambitious specification.
This method separates audible preference from connection failure. It also gives you a clear recovery path: return to the saved codec and flat-EQ values whenever a change introduces problems.

Bottom line
Make Android Bluetooth headphones sound better by fixing routing and volume first, confirming Media audio, and then trying only codecs supported by both devices. Use LDAC’s quality-focused choices only while the connection stays stable; switch toward balanced or connection-focused behavior when it does not. Treat EQ as a small, device-specific adjustment and Spatial Audio as an optional supported-content effect. If the same problem survives these checks, the fit, headphone hardware, accessibility processing, or a wired connection may be the practical answer.
