Yes—you can make beats on a computer with a digital audio workstation (DAW). A computer, the DAW, and its built-in instruments or samples are enough to get started; a drum machine, MIDI controller, and audio interface are optional depending on how you want to work.
What you need to make beats on a computer
A DAW is the software where you create and arrange music. It can sequence MIDI notes, play software instruments and samples, edit tracks, apply effects, mix, and export audio. In other words, you can build a beat entirely inside the computer without recording an external instrument. Focusrite explains the core role of a DAW.
- Required: a computer that meets the DAW’s system requirements and the DAW itself.
- Optional: a USB MIDI keyboard or pad controller for playing notes and triggering software sounds instead of entering them with a mouse and computer keyboard.
- Conditional: an audio interface if you want to record a microphone, guitar, or another external audio source. It is not required just to program MIDI or use virtual instruments.
- Useful: headphones or speakers so you can listen while you work; no particular model is required.
A controller sends performance information to the DAW; it does not replace the software. Standard MIDI controllers are supported by compatible DAWs, including the options described below. Check compatibility before buying a controller.
Choose a DAW that fits your computer and workflow
There is no single best DAW for every beginner. First check that the current version supports your operating system and computer. Then consider whether you prefer step-by-step drum programming, a clip-based workflow, or a timeline; whether you need to record audio; and what sounds and project limits come with the software.

| Software | What the official information establishes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FL Studio | Image-Line says FL Studio works fully on its own and supports USB or MIDI keyboards and pad controllers that send standard MIDI. Its trial includes the full feature set and full-quality exports without a time limit, but you cannot reopen saved projects until you purchase a license. | Confirm current system requirements and consider whether the trial’s project-reopening restriction works for your intended workflow. FL Studio details; download page. |
| Ableton Live Lite | Live Lite is bundled with certain hardware products and apps, is not sold separately, and its license does not expire. Live offers Session View for flexible clip-based composition and performance and Arrangement View for combining material on a timeline. | Check whether a product or app you already own includes a license, and verify requirements for the exact version. Ableton lists 8 GB RAM for Live 12 Lite. Live Lite information and requirements; Live views explained. |
| Serato Studio | The current download page describes sample, drum, and instrument decks, sound packs, audio recording, VST/AU support, and Scene and Song composers. It reports version 2.5.0, including macOS Tahoe support and native control for AlphaTheta SLAB. | Confirm current operating-system requirements on the live download page before installing. Serato Studio downloads. |
| Maschine 3 | Native Instruments says the software works without hardware, although compatible controllers are available. | Check current system requirements and decide whether its workflow suits you. Maschine 3 details. |
| MPC Beats | Akai presents MPC Beats as free beat-making software and mentions MIDI note entry and recording. | Review Akai’s current product information for the feature details and requirements you need. MPC Beats details. |
System requirements are specific to an application and version, not a universal measure of what every beat-making program needs. For example, Image-Line lists 4 GB RAM and 4 GB free disk space for FL Studio and recommends a quad-core CPU, 8–16 GB RAM, and an SSD for smoother performance. Ableton lists 8 GB RAM for Live 12 Lite. These are vendor-published specifications, not independent performance benchmarks. Check the software maker’s current requirements before installing, because versions and compatibility can change.
Make a first beat in a DAW
- Install a compatible DAW. Check its current operating-system and hardware requirements against your computer before downloading.
- Create a project. Start with the DAW’s bundled sounds and effects so you can learn the workflow before adding extra gear or sound packs.
- Build a drum pattern. Program notes with the mouse and keyboard, or use a compatible MIDI pad controller if you prefer tapping parts in.
- Add a bass or melodic part. Use a software instrument and enter notes in the piano roll or play them with a MIDI keyboard.
- Arrange the beat. Repeat patterns or clips and introduce variations to form sections in the song.
- Balance and export. Adjust track levels, add effects where useful, then export an audio file using the DAW’s available options.
Save the project as you work. If playback becomes unreliable or the computer struggles, simplify the project and consult the DAW maker’s setup guidance; performance depends on the computer, software, and project load.

Understand samples and release rights
A DAW may include sounds, samples, and export tools, but that does not establish that every included sound or third-party sample is cleared for every commercial use. Before releasing music that uses a sample or loop, check the license from its specific source and keep a copy of the applicable terms. Do not assume that access to a sound in a DAW automatically grants every right to distribute music made with it.
