On a Galaxy Z Fold, start with the per-app aspect-ratio control: open the unfolded phone, go to Settings > Display > Full screen apps, select the affected app, and choose Full screen. Reopen the app and check its controls. If Full screen stretches the interface or hides buttons, switch back to App default and use the compatibility options in Settings > Advanced features > Labs instead. These settings can improve how an app uses the inner panel, but they cannot repair an app whose own layout does not support the Fold’s near-square display.
Start with the per-app Full screen setting
The setting is applied one app at a time, so changing it for one title does not automatically change every app on the phone. Test it while the Fold is open, because the inner display and the cover display can expose different controls and produce different results.
- Unfold the Galaxy Z Fold. Reproduce the black bars, clipped controls or narrow layout on the inner display before changing anything.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display, then Full screen apps.
- If the page has an Aspect ratio tab, open that tab.
- Select the affected app.
- Choose Full screen.
- Force-close the app, launch it again and test the screens or controls that were previously affected.
Full screen tells the operating system to give the app the largest available window on that display. It is the fastest way to remove unused space, but it is not a guarantee that the app will redraw its interface correctly. If text, buttons or game controls are enlarged, stretched or cut off, return to the same page and select App default. The app’s original layout may be more usable than an expanded window.

What to do when Full screen apps is missing or ineffective
Samsung places additional compatibility controls in Labs. The exact list varies by Galaxy Z Fold model and software version, and Samsung describes Labs features as experimental; they may not work as expected.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Advanced features.
- Tap Labs.
- Look for the options available on your device, such as App screen zoom, Landscape view for portrait apps or full-screen split-screen controls.
- Enable one relevant option, then reopen the affected app and test it on the inner display.
App screen zoom
App screen zoom changes the apparent scale of the app interface. It is useful when the app occupies the panel but its text or controls are too small to read. It does not change the app window’s aspect ratio, so it will not by itself remove letterboxing or correct a layout that is limited to a phone-shaped window.
Landscape view for portrait apps
This option can help when a portrait-only app leaves large unused areas after the Fold is opened. It changes how the app is presented in landscape on the inner display. Use it only when the app remains usable after rotation; a portrait interface may still have controls designed for vertical use.

Some Fold models expose Labs controls for split-screen behavior. These affect how two apps share the inner panel, not just how one app fills it. If the problem appears only when another app is open beside it, check these controls rather than changing the app’s individual aspect ratio repeatedly.

Older One UI 3.1.1 models: Customized App Aspect Ratios
Supported Galaxy Z Fold models running One UI 3.1.1 may use an older menu name. Open Settings > Advanced features > Labs > Customized App Aspect Ratios, select the app and test the available choices:

Change one value at a time, close the app completely and reopen it before judging the result. If your phone does not show Customized App Aspect Ratios, do not assume the feature is broken; newer software may expose the controls through Full screen apps or a different Labs layout.
Choosing between Full screen, fixed ratios and App default
The right setting depends on what is wrong, not simply on how much of the panel is filled.

There is no universal best choice. A video player, a game, a banking app and a productivity app can respond differently to the same ratio override because each app draws its own interface.

Why an app can still be cropped after you select Full screen
The Galaxy Z Fold presents two substantially different shapes. Samsung describes the cover display as similar to a bar-type phone, while the main inner display is close to square. An app built only for a conventional phone ratio may not know how to rearrange its content when that window becomes wider or taller than expected.
That mismatch can produce three distinct results:
- Letterboxing: the app keeps its original ratio and leaves black or unused areas around the content.
- Stretching: the operating system gives the app more space, but graphics, text or controls appear unnaturally enlarged.
- Clipping: the app or its own fixed layout places controls outside the visible region, so edges, menus or buttons are cut off.
Samsung’s support guidance explicitly warns that some apps may not be compatible with Full screen view. In those cases, the setting can change the window supplied to the app but cannot rewrite the app’s internal layout.
A symptom-by-symptom troubleshooting path
Black bars remain after choosing Full screen
Confirm that you changed the setting for the unfolded inner display and selected the correct app. Force-close and reopen the app after the change. If bars remain, try App default and compare the result; the bars may be part of the app’s intentional ratio rather than a system error. On older supported software, test 16:9 and 4:3 under Customized App Aspect Ratios.
The app fills the panel but controls are cut off
Return to App default first. A forced ratio is not helpful if it hides a navigation button or makes a form impossible to complete. Then check Labs for a more suitable orientation or zoom option. Capture the exact screen where the control disappears so you can describe the failure accurately to the app developer.

The app is readable but too small
Keep the aspect-ratio choice that preserves the layout and look for App screen zoom in Settings > Advanced features > Labs. Zoom addresses scale; changing from 16:9 to Full screen changes the shape of the app window. Treat them as separate adjustments.
The issue appears only in landscape
Check whether Labs offers Landscape view for portrait apps. Test the app after reopening it, because an orientation change can leave a previously rendered screen in its old arrangement until the app starts a new layout.
The issue appears only in split screen
Open Labs and inspect any full-screen split-screen controls available for your model. A single-app aspect-ratio override does not necessarily control the way two apps divide the inner panel.
The cover screen works but the inner screen does not
That difference is expected when an app supports a phone-like cover ratio but not the inner display’s near-square shape. Configure and test the app while the Fold is open, then test it closed; do not assume one screen’s result proves compatibility with the other.

Apply changes in a controlled order
Changing several experimental options at once makes it difficult to identify which one helped or caused a new problem. Use this sequence for each affected app:
- Record the Fold model and One UI version shown in the phone’s software information, along with the app version.
- Reproduce the issue on the unfolded inner display and note whether it is letterboxing, stretching or clipping.
- Test Full screen under Settings > Display > Full screen apps.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- If the result is worse, restore App default before trying another mode.
- If the setting is unavailable or insufficient, test one relevant Labs option at a time.
- On a supported One UI 3.1.1 device, test 16:9 and 4:3 under Customized App Aspect Ratios.
- After every change, exercise the specific screen that failed, not just the app’s home page.
When the operating system cannot provide a permanent fix
The durable solution is an app update from its developer. Samsung’s developer guidance explains that foldable apps need to account for the cover and inner display ratios and use appropriate Android aspect-ratio constraints when content cannot safely occupy every shape. In practical terms, the developer must make the interface responsive or deliberately constrain it so important controls remain visible.
Update the affected app and the phone’s One UI before reporting a persistent problem. If the current versions still crop content, send the developer:

- the exact Galaxy Z Fold model;
- the installed One UI version;
- the app version;
- whether the failure occurs on the inner display, cover display or both;
- whether it occurs in portrait, landscape or split screen;
- the setting used: Full screen, App default, 16:9, 4:3 or a Labs option; and
- a screenshot showing the clipped or misplaced control.
This information distinguishes an app-layout defect from a phone setting that was simply applied to the wrong display.
How to verify that the change is actually helping
Do not judge compatibility from a single static screen. After applying a setting, check the app’s main navigation, a typical content page, a text-entry screen and any screen where controls were previously clipped. Open and close the Fold once during testing, then repeat the check on the cover display. A setting is successful only if the content is both visible and usable.
- All essential buttons remain inside the visible area.
- Text is not truncated at the left or right edge.
- Touch targets align with the graphics shown on screen.
- Rotation does not leave a blank or partially rendered region.
- Returning to the app after multitasking does not restore the crop.
If Full screen passes those checks, keep it for that app. If it fails any of them, App default or a fixed ratio is the safer choice until the developer ships foldable-aware support.
What the setting can—and cannot—fix

Bottom line for a cropped Galaxy Z Fold app
Use Settings > Display > Full screen apps and set the affected app to Full screen, then force-close and reopen it. If that creates distortion or clipping, restore App default and test the relevant options in Settings > Advanced features > Labs. Supported One UI 3.1.1 models may also offer 16:9 and 4:3 under Customized App Aspect Ratios. These are per-device workarounds; only an app update designed for the Fold’s cover and near-square inner displays can make full-screen behavior reliable across both screens.
