Apps and videos use separate sizing systems on Android. An app can be letterboxed by Android’s compatibility rules, while a video can show bars because its own frame is wider, narrower, taller or squarer than your phone. Fix the app in Android’s per-app display settings when your device provides them; fix the video with the player’s full-screen, fill or zoom control.
Any setting that fills more of the display has a trade-off: it may crop video edges or make an app’s layout awkward. The exact menu and available ratios depend on the phone, Android version and manufacturer.
First identify whether the problem is an app or a video
Use this quick distinction before changing settings:
- An app problem: the app itself has black bars, unused side space or a narrow portrait layout even when no video is playing. Android may be applying compatibility mode because the app declares a fixed orientation, aspect ratio or non-resizable layout.
- A video problem: the surrounding app fills the display, but the picture has bars or does not reach the edges. The video player is preserving the source video’s aspect ratio.
Changing Android’s per-app aspect ratio does not rewrite a video’s framing. Likewise, changing a player to fill the screen does not make another app resize.

Make an Android app use more of the display
Some large-screen Android devices provide user per-app aspect-ratio overrides. Android 14 QPR1 introduced this capability on devices that implement the relevant settings menu; manufacturers decide which choices to expose, and individual apps can opt out of some overrides. Use the app-specific display setting
- Open Settings.
- Open Apps, then choose the affected app. On some phones the option appears under an entry such as Aspect ratio, Display size for apps, Full screen or App aspect ratio.
- Select the ratio that best matches what you want. Options may include Full screen, 16:9, 4:3 or the manufacturer’s own labels.
- Close and reopen the app so it starts with the new setting.
There is no universal Android path. If the app page has no display control, use the Settings search field and try aspect ratio, full screen, display for apps or the app’s name. If search finds nothing, your phone may not implement the feature, may place it in a manufacturer-specific menu, or may not allow that app to be overridden.
Choose a ratio based on the result you need

These labels are examples, not a promise that every phone offers all four. A manufacturer can provide different ratios, and an app can reject particular overrides.
Why Android puts bars around an app
Android can use compatibility mode when an app’s declared orientation or resizability restrictions do not suit the available display. The system places the app in a constrained window rather than forcing a layout that could be unusable. Manufacturers can apply their own compatibility overrides, and Android’s user-facing controls exist only on devices that implement them. A fixed-portrait app may therefore appear as a narrow column on a wide display, with unused space on either side. An app that was built for a particular aspect ratio may show bars above and below it. Those bars are not necessarily a fault in your screen; they can be the system protecting the app’s declared layout.
What changes with Android 16
Android 16 (API level 36) ignores an app’s orientation, aspect-ratio and resizability restrictions on form factors whose smallest width is at least 600dp. This is a large-screen rule, not a blanket rule for every conventional phone. A device that meets the 600dp threshold may make a restricted app occupy more space, but Android’s change cannot guarantee that the app’s interface was designed for expansion. Buttons can still be poorly placed, text can reflow unexpectedly, or content can be hidden. Details about these restrictions are in Android’s app-orientation, aspect-ratio and resizability guidance.
If the app still looks wrong
Restore the default before forcing a layout
If full screen makes controls overlap, content disappear or navigation become difficult, return to Default or the original ratio in the same app-specific menu. A forced ratio can increase occupied area while reducing usability.

The absence of an aspect-ratio option is meaningful: Android does not expose one universal switch. Search Settings, check the app’s entry under Apps and look for a manufacturer-specific display page. Do not assume that a tutorial for another phone will have the same labels or choices.

Separate an app defect from a system limitation
If other apps fill the display normally but one app remains letterboxed, the app’s declared restrictions or design are the likely boundary. If the override is available but the app becomes unusable, report the layout issue to the app developer and keep the default ratio until it is corrected. Android’s compatibility controls cannot supply missing adaptive layouts.
Make a video fit the phone screen
The video player handles framing independently from Android’s app aspect ratio. It reads the video’s shape and chooses a presentation that avoids distorting the image. YouTube’s Android help explains that vertical and square clips use a taller player, while widescreen videos use a shorter one; vertical full-screen viewing can be entered with the full-screen control or by swiping up. Use the player’s full-screen or fill control
- Open the video in your player.
- Tap the full-screen icon. On some players, rotate the phone or swipe upward on the video to enter the expanded view.
- If the expanded player offers Fill, Zoom, Crop or a similar control, select it when you want the picture to reach more of the display.
- Return to Fit, Original or Contain when you want every edge of the source frame visible.
Control names and gestures vary by app and version. A player may provide only full screen, with no independent fill or fit mode.

Neither mode can make a 4:3, 16:9, ultrawide or vertical source simultaneously fill a differently shaped phone and remain uncropped. Stretching the picture to remove bars would distort circles and people, so reputable players preserve the aspect ratio instead.

Why a video has black bars
The source is wider than the phone’s usable area
A cinematic or other widescreen recording can be wider than the phone in portrait orientation. Fitting its entire width leaves space above and below. Rotating to landscape may reduce the bars, but it still cannot change the source ratio.
The source is taller or squarer
Vertical and square clips are taller relative to their width than a landscape phone display. The player may show a tall viewing area or side space rather than enlarging the image until its top and bottom are cut off.
The video already contains letterboxing
Some recordings include black bands inside the video file itself. A player’s crop control can remove part of those bands, but it also removes picture near the same edges. If the bands are baked into the source, an Android app setting cannot remove them without cropping.

- Identify the layer. If menus and non-video content are narrow, troubleshoot the app. If only the picture has bars, troubleshoot the player.
- Try the least destructive option. For an app, start with its default or a ratio that preserves the whole layout. For a video, start with Fit or Original.
- Use full screen. Enter the player’s full-screen view or reopen the app after changing an Android per-app ratio.
- Test Fill or Zoom deliberately. Watch the edges for missing subtitles, controls, faces or score information before keeping the setting.
- Undo a bad result. Return the app to Default or the video to Fit/Original if content becomes clipped or controls are awkward.
- Escalate only the correct problem. Report a persistently broken app layout to its developer; a video’s bars are normally a consequence of the source and chosen presentation mode.
What you can expect by Android version and device

Common failure cases and fixes
There is no Full screen option for the app
That option is not guaranteed on ordinary phones. Search Settings for aspect ratio, full screen and the app name, then check the app’s page under Apps. If no result appears, the device or app does not expose a user override.

The app fills the screen but text or buttons are cut off
Switch back to Default or the previous ratio. The override changes the available window; it does not redesign the app. Keep the setting that leaves controls usable and report the defect to the developer.
Full-screen video still has bars
Full screen expands the player, not necessarily the picture. Look for Fill, Zoom or Crop. If only Fit is available, the player is preserving the complete frame. If the bars are part of the source file, removing them requires cropping.
Fill removes important information
Use Fit or Original for subtitles, sports graphics, presentations and any video where edge details matter. Fill is a viewing preference, not a quality improvement.

A tutorial’s menu names do not match this phone
Android and manufacturers place the controls differently, and the available ratios differ by device. Use Settings search rather than following a fixed path from another model. The same principle applies to video players: look for the full-screen, fit, fill or zoom control actually shown by your app version.
The essential trade-off
Making an app occupy more of a wide display can remove letterboxing, but it may expose weaknesses in an app that was built for a fixed shape. Making a video cover every pixel can enlarge it, but some of the source frame must be cropped whenever the phone and video use different aspect ratios. Choose the app ratio and player mode according to whether your priority is maximum area, an intact layout or an uncropped picture.
