Make the app adapt to the window, not to a foldable model. Measure the space currently allocated to your activity, map it to a window size class, and switch navigation and content layouts at those breakpoints. A device can be unfolded yet give your app only a narrow split-screen window, or give it a broad inner display; physical screen dimensions cannot tell you which layout is appropriate.
This is now a compatibility requirement as well as a design improvement. For apps targeting Android 16 (API level 36), orientation, aspect-ratio and resizability restrictions are ignored on displays whose smallest width is at least 600 dp, with documented exceptions. A phone-shaped UI may therefore be placed in a wide window whether or not the manifest was written for it. The steps below show how to make that space useful, preserve work while the window changes, and test folded, unfolded and resized states.
Why a wide foldable needs an adaptive layout
Unfolding changes the available app window, often from a compact phone-like area to a broad inner display. The same change can happen when a user rotates the device, enters multi-window mode, drags a desktop-style resize handle or changes posture. Android describes the principle plainly: “Adaptive apps change layouts based on changes in the app display, primarily the size of the app window.” See Android’s adaptive-app introduction.

A layout that merely stretches its phone controls usually wastes the new area. Text lines become uncomfortably long, buttons grow wider without becoming easier to use, and a detail screen may leave a large blank region. A useful expanded layout either shows additional task-relevant information or reorganizes the task into panes while keeping reading and interaction areas at sensible maximum widths.

Android 16 changes the compatibility baseline
For an application targeting API level 36, Android 16 ignores several manifest and API-requested restrictions on displays with a smallest width of at least 600 dp. The affected values include screenOrientation, resizeableActivity, minAspectRatio, maxAspectRatio, and corresponding requested-orientation calls. The group includes tablets, large-screen foldable inner displays and desktop windowing. Displays below 600 dp, games identified with the android:appCategory flag, and a user opt-in to the app’s default behavior in aspect-ratio settings are documented exceptions. Android 16 temporarily provides PROPERTY_COMPAT_ALLOW_RESTRICTED_RESIZABILITY at activity or application scope. This is a compatibility escape hatch, not a way to preserve a locked portrait presentation: for apps targeting API 36 or later it does not lock orientation or prevent rotation on large displays. Android 17 guidance says the restrictions no longer apply on displays with smallest width greater than 600 dp for apps targeting API 37 or later, and the opt-out is removed for API 37 targets. Because this behavior is target-version-sensitive, check the current Android 17 documentation before choosing a rollout strategy.
Do not use a fixed aspect ratio, a non-resizable activity or a manifest orientation lock as your wide-screen design. Android warns that those constraints are incompatible with adaptive behavior: a phone layout can be stretched, letterboxed or leave controls outside the usable area. Compatibility behavior can make an app visible; only a responsive layout makes it usable.
Start with the app window, not the device
The app window is the portion of the display assigned to your activity. On an unfolded foldable it may be the entire inner screen, one side of split screen or a user-resized desktop window. Obtain current window metrics through Jetpack WindowManager or the current recommended Android window APIs, then derive a window size class. The display-size guidance explains why device model and physical screen size are the wrong inputs.
Compose implementation pattern
With the current Material 3 adaptive library, the foldable examples use currentWindowAdaptiveInfoV2(). Treat the function and dependency version as library details to verify against the release you ship. Recompute the adaptive information whenever the window changes and branch the overall layout on the width class rather than on a product name.

}In a view-based app, observe window metrics and update constraints or fragments from the resulting class. Avoid caching the first measurement: a fold, rotation, split-screen transition or resize can invalidate it while the activity remains visible.
What the classes should mean

The class is a decision aid, not a promise that every screen should have two panes. A reading screen may simply center a constrained article column and add a related-content rail; a form may remain one column while gaining an always-visible summary. Choose the arrangement that reduces navigation or reveals information the user needs for the current task.

Replace stretching with useful content
Inventory each compact screen and ask what the extra area can do. A mail-like task might show the message list beside the selected message. A settings task might keep categories in a navigation rail while displaying the selected category’s controls. A dashboard can reveal related metrics that otherwise require separate navigation. If no additional content helps, center the primary content and cap its width instead of allowing paragraphs, forms or toolbars to span the entire foldable.
Choose navigation for the available width
Bottom navigation is efficient when horizontal space is scarce. On a larger class, a navigation rail can leave more vertical room for content and keep destinations visible. Do not switch solely because the device is a foldable; switch when the current window class provides enough width and the task benefits from persistent destinations. Preserve the selected destination when the class changes so unfolding does not reset the user’s place.
Design list-detail behavior
In compact mode, selecting a list item can navigate to a detail destination. In expanded mode, keep the list and detail destinations in one activity or adaptive container, with selection driving the detail pane. Define an empty-detail state for the initial expanded view, and ensure that deep links, back navigation and rotation preserve the selected item. A two-pane layout should not duplicate actions in ways that confuse keyboard, touch or accessibility users.

Constrain reading and control widths
- Set a maximum width for long-form text and forms, then center the column in the available pane.
- Keep action groups together; do not distribute related buttons across the full display merely to fill space.
- Allow cards and grids to add columns only when each item remains large enough to read and operate.
- Account for the hinge, cutout and system bars when a posture or window inset makes part of the display unsuitable.
These constraints improve both an unfolded foldable and a large tablet or desktop window. They also prevent a UI from becoming awkward when a user drags a split-screen divider to an intermediate width.

Assume that a configuration change or window resize can recreate an activity. Android’s adaptive guidance specifically calls out folding, unfolding, rotation and resizing as events that can interrupt an in-progress task. Preserve form input, scroll position, selected items, navigation destination and any other context needed to resume without guesswork. Use lifecycle-aware state holders and saved instance state for transient UI values; persist durable drafts in your normal data layer.
Make every action reachable
Landscape often provides width but less height. A form that fits in portrait may hide its submit button in landscape or in a short split-screen window. Make the content scroll, keep primary actions in the scrollable flow or use an appropriately inset bottom action area, and verify that the software keyboard does not cover the focused field. Dialogs and sheets need the same treatment: they must resize or scroll rather than extend beyond the window.
Handle posture transitions without losing context
When the user unfolds a device, keep the current destination and input. If the new width enables a second pane, show the related content without silently replacing the current item. When folding removes a pane, choose a deterministic rule—usually retain the detail destination and provide a clear back path to the list—then restore the same rule after repeated transitions.
Camera and other aspect-ratio-sensitive surfaces
A camera viewfinder needs separate testing. The sensor’s aspect ratio may differ from the UI container, especially when switching between portrait and landscape. Verify preview rotation, cropping or letterboxing, shutter controls and capture results in both orientations. Do not assume that the preview can simply fill the available view; calculate the intended transform and keep controls reachable after every posture change. Test the app across windows and postures
Use a matrix rather than one unfolded-device check. The adaptive app quality guidelines define representative configurations; emulator names and offerings can change, so confirm the current Android Studio setup before creating a test plan.

The guidance lists a Pixel Fold emulator, medium-tablet emulator, desktop-preview emulator and resizable emulator for varied configurations. Physical hardware is useful for hinge, sensor and posture behavior, but the workflow does not require buying a foldable: Android Studio’s emulators and resizable configurations cover the core window-layout checks.
Run this test sequence for every important task
- Launch in compact portrait and complete the task once.
- Repeat in compact landscape, checking that content scrolls and the primary action remains visible.
- Unfold or switch to an expanded window while partway through the task. Confirm that input, selection and navigation destination survive.
- On the expanded layout, verify that additional panes or content are useful, not merely duplicated or stretched.
- Enter and leave multi-window mode, drag the divider through breakpoint boundaries and resize repeatedly.
- Test folded, unfolded and relevant book or tabletop postures, then rotate in each posture.
- Inspect dialogs, menus, text wrapping, accessibility focus, keyboard behavior, deep links, back navigation and camera previews.
Define pass criteria from the app’s use case and the applicable adaptive quality tier. A screen passes only when its controls can be reached, its text remains legible, and the user’s context survives the transition—not merely when the activity technically occupies the full display.

“The app fills the inner display, but everything is huge”
The window is being accepted without a responsive composition. Add width-class branches, cap text and form widths, and choose a pane or navigation-rail arrangement where it shortens the user’s path.

“The app is still letterboxed or portrait-only”
Check the target SDK, manifest restrictions and any orientation API calls. On API 36 targets, large displays may ignore those restrictions; on earlier targets or exception cases, compatibility behavior can differ. Remove unnecessary locks and validate the current Android documentation before relying on an opt-out property.

“The user loses a draft after unfolding”
Move transient form and selection state out of a view that is destroyed with the activity, restore it through lifecycle-aware state and saved instance state, and test recreation during an actual edit rather than only at launch.
“The submit button disappears in landscape”
Make the content scroll and test the shortest supported window, including split screen with the keyboard open. Avoid fixed-height containers and verify bottom insets.
“The two-pane layout feels empty or confusing”
Two panes are not mandatory. Use them only when the second pane improves the task. Otherwise center a constrained primary surface, add a purposeful secondary region or retain the compact navigation model at that width.
A practical implementation checklist
- Measure current app-window metrics; never branch on a foldable model name or physical display size.
- Convert metrics to window size classes and make the top-level layout react to class changes.
- Replace hard-coded orientation, aspect-ratio and non-resizable assumptions with responsive layouts.
- Decide what extra content, navigation or panes genuinely help at medium and expanded widths.
- Apply maximum widths to reading and interaction surfaces.
- Preserve drafts, selection, scroll position and navigation context through recreation and posture changes.
- Make landscape and short windows scrollable, including dialogs, forms and keyboard-open states.
- Verify camera preview transforms independently from the surrounding layout.
- Exercise fold, unfold, rotation, book/tabletop posture where relevant, multi-window and repeated resize events.
- Run the representative foldable, tablet, Chromebook/Googlebook and emulator configurations in the adaptive quality guidance.
- Recheck target-version behavior in the current Android release documentation before shipping.
When these checks pass, the app is not simply allowed to appear on a wide foldable; it is using the space intentionally and remaining reliable as that space changes.
