To make plain terracotta in Minecraft, smelt clay in a furnace. You can also mine terracotta in badlands, find undyed blocks in some plains, savanna, and desert village houses, or obtain it through stone mason trades. Combine plain terracotta with a dye to make one of the 16 colored variants, then smelt the colored block with fuel to make its matching glazed terracotta.
Plain terracotta is a subdued building block, dyed terracotta is a controlled color field, and glazed terracotta is a high-contrast directional tile. The recipe is simple; getting a clean glazed pattern requires deliberate block orientation.

Terracotta at a glance
| Variant | How to obtain it | Best visual role | Placement concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain terracotta | Mine it in badlands, find it in certain village houses, trade with a stone mason, or smelt clay | Muted walls, roofs, floors, and earthen palettes | Normal block placement; no directional motif |
| Colored terracotta | Combine plain terracotta with one of the 16 regular dye colors | Solid color bands, accents, trim, and controlled palettes | Normal block placement; color is the main design decision |
| Glazed terracotta | Smelt colored terracotta with fuel in a furnace or another applicable smelting block | Repeating tiles, borders, signs, floors, and focal details | Texture is directional, so orientation must be planned |
The production chain is therefore:
clay → plain terracotta → dye → colored terracotta → fuel-powered smelting → glazed terracotta
Plain terracotta is not the intended direct input for glazed terracotta. If you want a glazed color, make that color first.

How to get plain terracotta
Mine terracotta in a badlands biome
Badlands are the strongest natural source highlighted for terracotta. Large exposed layers make mining practical when you need stacks for a substantial build. Bring a pickaxe, move along the exposed colored hills, and collect the blocks that match the palette you want. Mining is usually faster than searching individual structures when you need a large, consistent supply.
Search village houses
Undyed terracotta can appear in villager houses in plains, savanna, and desert settings. Village generation is variable, so a particular settlement may not contain the block or may contain only a small amount. Treat villages as an opportunistic source rather than a guaranteed bulk supply.

Trade with a stone mason
Stone mason villagers can sell terracotta. The referenced guidance also records an expert mason trade for glazed terracotta. Available offers depend on villager profession, trading level, edition, and release, so check the actual trade screen in your world instead of assuming every mason has the same inventory.
Smelt clay for a dependable production route
When badlands are distant and village searching is inconvenient, smelting clay gives you a repeatable way to produce plain terracotta. Gather clay, place it in a furnace, add fuel, and collect the terracotta output. This route is especially useful when you already have a clay source near your base.
Make plain terracotta by smelting clay
- Gather clay. Look for clay deposits in suitable water environments and collect enough for the amount of terracotta your project requires.
- Open a furnace. Put the clay in the input slot.
- Add fuel. Coal, charcoal, or another accepted fuel will power the smelting process.
- Collect the output. Finished items appear in the result slot as plain terracotta.
- Repeat or scale up. Use multiple furnaces when you need several stacks and have enough fuel to keep them running.
This produces undyed terracotta. Do not expect the furnace to choose a color for you; coloring is a separate crafting step.

How to dye terracotta
Dyeing turns plain terracotta into a colored terracotta block. The available set corresponds to Minecraft’s 16 regular dye colors:

Craft colored terracotta
- Place plain terracotta in the crafting grid.
- Add the dye for the color you want. The dye determines the resulting terracotta color.
- Collect the colored terracotta. Repeat the process for each color in your build plan.
Keep plain and colored blocks separate in storage. Their textures are related, but they serve different purposes: plain terracotta supplies a warm neutral surface, while dyed terracotta establishes a deliberate color field without the geometric motif of glazing.
Plan a palette before crafting a large batch
Decide whether the block will cover a broad surface or appear as a small accent. Muted plain terracotta works well as a base, while a few dyed colors can define trim, stripes, or architectural zones. If the final design requires a repeating motif, make the colored version first and reserve part of the batch for glazing.
How to make glazed terracotta
Glazed terracotta is made from colored terracotta plus fuel. Plain terracotta does not produce a glazed block through this recipe.
- Start with colored terracotta. If you have only plain blocks, return to the dyeing step and make the desired color.
- Open a furnace. The official guidance describes smelting the colored block with any fuel. The cited mechanics also refer to a blast furnace or another applicable smelting block; exact support can vary by edition and release, so use a furnace if another block does not accept the input.
- Put the colored terracotta in the input slot.
- Add fuel. The smelting process consumes fuel and creates the matching glazed color.
- Collect the glazed terracotta. Every dye color has its own glazed block and texture.

For example, smelting red terracotta gives red glazed terracotta; it does not give a random glazed color. If the output is not what you expected, verify the input block’s color before starting another batch.
Plain, dyed, or glazed: which should you use?
| Decision | Choose plain terracotta when… | Choose dyed terracotta when… | Choose glazed terracotta when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface coverage | You need a large, quiet surface | You need a broad field of a specific color | You need a small or carefully aligned patterned area |
| Visual character | You want warm, earthy, and muted | You want color without a strong symbol | You want bold geometric contrast |
| Production effort | Clay smelting, mining, or basic trading is enough | Add a dye to the plain block | Make the colored block, then spend fuel on a second smelting step |
| Placement precision | Low | Low | High; orientation changes the motif |
A practical build often uses all three: plain terracotta for the main mass, dyed terracotta for color bands, and glazed terracotta for a border or focal panel.
How glazed terracotta orientation works
Glazed terracotta is directional. The texture on the face of the block depends on the direction in which you place it, so identical blocks can form different motifs when rotated. Neighboring pieces do not automatically compensate for an earlier placement mistake.
Test a 2×2 sample first
- Clear a small test area. A flat patch makes the four block faces easy to compare.
- Rotate your player before each placement. Place several glazed blocks in a 2×2 sample while deliberately changing the direction you face.
- Inspect the corners and center. Corner details often dominate the visible pattern, and repeated corners can merge into larger designs.
- Choose the orientation that matches your intended motif. Break and replace the sample if one tile points the wrong way.
- Expand only after the sample works. Copy the same placement logic across the full floor, wall, border, or sign.
Place a test block before filling a large area. This costs a few blocks and prevents a whole wall or floor from having to be dismantled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse magenta glazed terracotta as an orientation key
Magenta glazed terracotta has an arrow that indicates the direction the player was facing when the block was placed. That makes it useful for documenting a layout: you can record which way the arrow points, share the arrangement with another player, and reproduce the same orientation instead of relying on a screenshot alone.

Understand repeating corners
When several glazed blocks are placed together, their corner textures meet and create the apparent pattern. A layout that looks correct as a single tile can become cluttered when repeated. Check at least a 2×2 sample, and check a longer strip if the design will run along a corridor or wall. Larger designs merge repeating corner details, so the useful unit may be bigger than one block.
Build applications for each terracotta type
Plain terracotta for muted architecture
Plain terracotta’s warm, subdued appearance suits large walls, roofs, towers, and earthen palettes. It can soften a build that would look too stark in bright concrete or quartz, and it pairs naturally with other earthy materials. Because it has no directional symbol, you can place it quickly across broad surfaces.

Colored terracotta adds a defined hue while keeping the same relatively quiet surface language. Use it for bands between floors, window surrounds, roof trim, wayfinding stripes, or a limited accent palette. It is a good middle ground when plain terracotta is too neutral and glazed terracotta is too busy.
Glazed terracotta for high-contrast details
Glazed blocks are most effective as accents: a patterned floor inset, a doorway border, a sign panel, a narrow stripe, or a repeating tile in a room that needs a focal point. Every color has its own texture, so choose the color for both its hue and its motif. Covering an entire large wall can be visually intense and makes orientation errors more expensive.
A reliable workflow for a terracotta build
- Define the visual role. Decide whether the block is a muted surface, a solid color accent, or a directional pattern.
- Choose the acquisition route. Mine badlands for natural stock, search eligible villages, trade with a stone mason, or smelt clay at home.
- Produce plain terracotta first. Keep enough undyed blocks for the base and for later color batches.
- Dye only the quantity you need. Select from the 16 regular colors and label storage by color.
- Reserve a test batch for glazing. Smelt colored terracotta with fuel and inspect the resulting motif before committing your full supply.
- Build a placement sample. Use a 2×2 arrangement, then extend it to the size of the final pattern.
- Record orientation. For a shared build, note the player-facing direction or use the magenta arrow as a reference.
- Install the final section. Work in small areas so a misplaced tile can be corrected without removing an entire room.
Troubleshooting terracotta recipes and patterns
The furnace gives plain terracotta instead of glazed terracotta
Check the input slot. Glazed terracotta requires colored terracotta. Plain terracotta is the wrong input for the glazed result, so dye it first and then smelt the colored block.

The output is the wrong glazed color
Verify the color of the input block before smelting. Each dye color maps to its matching glazed block; the furnace does not recolor the item based on fuel or on nearby blocks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A blast furnace or other block will not accept the item
Use a standard furnace. Although the cited guidance includes a blast furnace or another applicable smelting block, acceptance can depend on your edition and release. The furnace is the dependable fallback for this recipe.
The pattern looks disconnected
Break the affected blocks and rebuild a small sample. Glazed textures are directional, and one block placed while facing a different direction can interrupt an otherwise coherent motif. Compare corners in a 2×2 test before expanding again.
You cannot find enough terracotta
Change acquisition method instead of relying on one source. Mine badlands for exposed deposits, check plains, savanna, and desert village houses for undyed blocks, trade with a stone mason, or establish a clay-smelting loop at your base.
Villager trades do not match a guide
Confirm the villager is a stone mason and inspect its current level and offers. Trades, structure generation, and block data can change between releases and editions. A guide written for one version is not a guarantee for every Java or Bedrock world.
