A Minecraft Fire Charge is a single-use fire-lighting item and a dispenser projectile. Craft three at once with one blaze powder, one coal or charcoal, and one gunpowder in either a 2×2 or 3×3 crafting grid. You can use a charge on a block to place fire, relight a completed Nether portal, ignite several fire-based targets, load it into a dispenser, or use it as the large-ball ingredient for a firework star.
What a Fire Charge does
A Fire Charge is an item that starts fire when you use it on a suitable block. The charge is consumed immediately, so each direct ignition costs one item. In that respect it works like a single-use substitute for flint and steel rather than a reusable tool.
Fire Charges also have two special roles. A dispenser loaded with one launches a small fireball, allowing remote ignition and redstone mechanisms. In firework-star crafting, a Fire Charge supplies the large-ball shape effect. These uses are separate from hand use: selecting the item and using it on a block places fire, while a dispenser handles the projectile behavior.
Fire Charge recipe
The recipe always makes three Fire Charges. It works in both the player’s 2×2 crafting grid and a 3×3 crafting table, so you do not need a crafting table if you already have the ingredients in your inventory.

The ingredients can be arranged in any positions in the grid; the recipe does not require a particular pattern. Place one of each ingredient in the grid, take the output, and the result is three charges.
How to craft a Fire Charge step by step
- Collect one blaze powder. Blaze powder is crafted from blaze rods, which come from blazes in the Nether.
- Collect one coal or one charcoal. The recipe accepts either item; they are interchangeable for this recipe.
- Collect one gunpowder. Ghasts are one Nether source of gunpowder.
- Open a crafting grid. Use the 2×2 grid in your inventory or open a crafting table for a 3×3 grid.
- Place the three ingredients in the grid. Add one blaze powder, one coal or charcoal, and one gunpowder in any three slots.
- Take the output. One operation produces three Fire Charges. Move them to your inventory before closing the interface.
If the output does not appear, check that you used blaze powder rather than a blaze rod, that the coal slot contains coal or charcoal, and that the third ingredient is gunpowder. A blaze rod is not the finished recipe ingredient; it must first be converted into blaze powder.

How to obtain the ingredients through normal progression
Blaze powder from blaze rods
Blazes in Nether fortresses provide blaze rods. Crafting a blaze rod into blaze powder supplies the recipe’s Nether-specific component. Because blaze powder is also used for other progression recipes, keep extra rods if you expect to make several batches of charges.
Gunpowder from ghasts
Ghasts can drop gunpowder. This gives a direct route to the explosive ingredient while you are already in the Nether collecting blaze rods. Gunpowder can also come from other normal game sources, but the official progression explanation specifically connects ghasts with the Fire Charge recipe.

Coal from wither skeletons or coal mining
Wither skeletons can provide coal, and ordinary coal mining supplies the same recipe ingredient. If you have no coal available, charcoal is an alternative and can be used in exactly the same slot.
The resulting progression is straightforward: defeat blazes for rods, turn a rod into blaze powder, obtain coal or charcoal, collect gunpowder, and craft three charges. This route is particularly useful when a Nether portal has gone out and you need a way to relight it.

Other ways to find Fire Charges
Crafting is predictable, but current item-reference data also records Fire Charges in some generated structures and through piglin bartering. The exact loot behavior is edition- and version-sensitive, so do not apply a Java result to Bedrock or an older release without checking the relevant table for that release.
- Ruined-portal chests: Fire Charges can appear as chest loot.
- Trial-chamber dispensers: Current item references list Fire Charges in dispensers found in trial chambers.
- Piglin bartering: A piglin can barter one Fire Charge for one gold ingot. Bartering outcomes and rates can change between editions and versions, so treat the one-item exchange as a version-qualified mechanic.
These sources are useful when you find a charge before you have a blaze farm or a reliable gunpowder supply. They do not replace the recipe when you need a repeatable stockpile.

How to use a Fire Charge directly
- Select the Fire Charge in your hotbar.
- Aim at the block or surface that should catch fire.
- Use the item on the block. On Java Edition played with a mouse, this is normally right-click; other platforms use their own use-item control.
- Confirm the result. Fire appears on the targeted surface and the charge disappears from your inventory.
Because direct use consumes the item, carry several charges if you are lighting a series of locations. A failed attempt can still cost a charge if the game accepts the use action, so aim carefully before activating it. The exact blocks that can be ignited depend on the game’s normal fire rules and the target type.
Can a Fire Charge relight a Nether portal?
Yes. A Fire Charge can ignite a completed Nether portal frame. This is useful when a portal has been extinguished, including the situation in which a ghast’s fireball puts out the portal’s interior. Use the charge on the portal’s interior area or another valid part of the completed frame in the same way you would use flint and steel.

The obsidian frame must already be complete and valid; a Fire Charge supplies the ignition only. If the portal does not activate, inspect the frame for a missing or misplaced obsidian block, then try the use action again on the interior. Do not spend charges attempting to repair an invalid frame.
What else can a Fire Charge ignite?
Item-reference data lists several target types in addition to ordinary flammable blocks. The charge’s direct-use behavior is still single-use: one successful ignition consumes one charge.

Use caution around TNT, creepers, and any build where fire can spread. A Fire Charge is an ignition tool, not a safe decorative light, and its single-use nature makes accidental clicks wasteful as well as potentially destructive.
How to fire a Fire Charge from a dispenser
When a dispenser contains a Fire Charge, activation launches a small fireball. This lets you place the ignition point away from the player and connect it to a redstone trigger, pressure mechanism, or timed circuit. The behavior is ammunition-based: the dispenser needs a Fire Charge in its inventory for each shot.
- Place a dispenser with its front facing the direction in which you want the fireball to travel.
- Open the dispenser and put one or more Fire Charges into its inventory.
- Connect a redstone trigger. A button, lever, pressure plate, observer circuit, or another redstone source can provide the activation signal.
- Clear the firing path. Check that the block in front of the dispenser and the intended target will not block the shot.
- Activate the circuit. The dispenser consumes a charge and fires a small fireball.
- Reload when empty. A dispenser cannot produce another shot after its Fire Charges are exhausted.
This setup is useful for remote ignition, defenses, traps, and automated fire-starting mechanisms. Build and test it in a controlled area first: fire can damage structures, and a redstone trigger may activate more often than you expect if it is attached to a clock or repeatedly powered source.
Hand use versus dispenser use

Using a Fire Charge in a firework star
In current Java recipe data, a Fire Charge is the ingredient that gives a firework star the large-ball shape. This is a crafting use rather than an ignition action: the charge is consumed as a recipe component, and the resulting star can be used in a firework rocket recipe.

Choose this use when you want the large-ball visual effect and already have a supply of charges. If your priority is portal recovery or a dispenser mechanism, reserve the charges for those jobs instead. Recipe availability can vary by edition and version, so verify the recipe book for the release you are playing.

Both items can relight a completed Nether portal, but they serve different inventory and automation needs.

Use flint and steel for repeated manual lighting when durability and iron are easier to maintain. Use Fire Charges when you need a disposable charge, have Nether ingredients available, want dispenser-fired ignition, or need the large-ball firework-star ingredient.
Common problems and fixes
The recipe will not appear
- Confirm that the powder is blaze powder, not a blaze rod.
- Use coal or charcoal in the fuel slot; another fuel item will not satisfy the recipe.
- Check that the third ingredient is gunpowder.
- Try the inventory 2×2 grid or a crafting table 3×3 grid and place one of each ingredient.
The charge does not relight the portal
- Inspect the frame: it must be a complete, valid Nether portal frame.
- Aim at a valid interior surface rather than an unrelated block beside the frame.
- Make sure the charge is selected and use the platform’s item-use control.
The dispenser does nothing
- Open the dispenser and verify that it contains Fire Charges.
- Check that the redstone signal reaches the dispenser and actually changes its powered state.
- Ensure the dispenser’s front is not blocked.
- Remember that every activation consumes ammunition; reload it after the inventory is empty.
A charge seems missing
Direct use consumes the item by design. Crafting creates three, but each hand ignition, dispenser shot, or firework-star recipe consumes one separately. Count the charges before starting a portal-repair trip or wiring a repeated dispenser circuit.
Edition and version notes
The crafting recipe and direct ignition concept are stable across the standard Minecraft editions described here, but loot tables, piglin bartering, trial-chamber contents, and dispenser details are version-sensitive. When documenting a farm, loot route, or exact drop chance, identify whether the world is Java or Bedrock and name the game version. Do not assume a structure chest or barter result from one edition applies unchanged to the other.
