You can share a GIF on Facebook through the post composer’s GIF option, from GIPHY’s sharing controls, or by attaching a GIF file you saved. To make a GIF, GIPHY’s desktop tool accepts a video file or URL, while its mobile app can record or use media from your camera roll. Available controls can vary by device and account, so use the options displayed in your composer.

Choose how you want to share the GIF

Route Best for What happens

Share from GIPHY Choosing a GIF in GIPHY first Use GIPHY’s Facebook sharing control to open a Facebook posting window.
Attach a saved GIF Posting a GIF file already on your device Choose Photo/Video in the Facebook composer and select the saved file.

GIPHY documents all three methods, though the labels and availability of controls may differ across devices or accounts. Facebook’s posting help also describes adding an item such as a GIF to a post and choosing its audience before publishing.

Share a GIF in a Facebook post

Use the GIF option in the composer

  1. Open the post composer on the profile, group, or destination where you want to post.
  2. Choose the GIF option if it appears. Search for a GIF and select it.
  3. Add text if you want, then review the audience selector before publishing.
  4. Publish the post when the GIF, destination, and audience are correct.

The GIF-picker workflow is documented by GIPHY. Facebook’s audience setting determines who can see the post; check it rather than assuming a profile or group post is public or private.

Share directly from GIPHY

  1. Find the GIF on GIPHY and select its Facebook sharing control.
  2. In the Facebook pop-up, add a caption if desired.
  3. Check the destination and audience options shown, then post.

GIPHY documents this route, but the controls shown in its interface may change.

This method is also documented by GIPHY. Check how the post appears before sharing because display behavior can vary.

Make a GIF on a desktop

GIPHY GIF Maker lets you start with a video file or a URL, then edit the clip before uploading it. In GIPHY’s documented workflow, video inputs must be under 100 MB and shorter than 15 seconds; those are GIF Maker input constraints, not Facebook upload limits. GIPHY’s desktop guide describes these steps:

Meta Portal TV - Big Screen Smart Video Calling for Group Calls on Your TV
  • Scale up your greatest conversations. Smart video calling on your TV brings your favorite people, larger-than-life, into your living room.
  • Share the room. Perfect for group calls. Meta Portal TV captures your whole room so everyone is in view without jostling for position.
  • Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.
  • A more natural connection. Smart Camera adjusts automatically so you can move freely and stay in frame, while Smart Sound ensures you can be heard clearly.
  • Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the camera cover.
  1. Open GIF Maker and provide a video file or URL.
  2. Adjust the clip and, if useful, add captions or stickers.
  3. Edit layers or crop the image as needed.
  4. Continue to upload and set the upload details.

When uploading, GIPHY offers tags and a source URL, along with public or private visibility. GIPHY says private uploads cannot be seen by others or shared, so a private upload is not a way to share that GIF on Facebook. Credit the original source where appropriate, and upload only material you have the rights to share. See GIPHY’s upload instructions.

Make a GIF on a phone

GIPHY’s mobile creation instructions describe recording with the app camera or selecting media from the phone’s camera roll, then editing and uploading. Exact controls can shift as the app changes. GIPHY’s mobile guide outlines this general sequence:

Share a GIF in a Facebook message

Facebook’s help overview also lists GIFs as an option for messaging. Look for the GIF control in the message composer; messaging is separate from publishing a Feed post, so a post’s audience selector does not apply to the message. Facebook Help Center provides the platform’s messaging overview.

Check visibility before sharing

  • Facebook post: Review the audience selector in the post flow before publishing, especially when posting to a group or another destination with its own visibility controls.
  • GIPHY upload: Public and private upload settings control visibility on GIPHY. Private uploads cannot be shared with others, according to GIPHY’s upload documentation.

These are separate controls: a GIPHY upload’s visibility does not replace Facebook’s audience setting for a post. Interfaces may not show the same options for every account, region, app version, or device.
