To create a bulleted list in Adobe InDesign, select the paragraphs, then apply a paragraph style with bullet settings or configure the list through the Paragraph panel’s Bullets and Numbering controls. Use paragraph styles for consistent formatting, and adjust the indents and tab position to control alignment and spacing.
Create a bulleted list
-
With the Type tool, select the paragraphs you want to turn into list items.
-
For a reusable format, open Window > Styles > Paragraph Styles and apply a paragraph style configured with bullets. For a one-off list, use the Paragraph panel’s Bullets and Numbering controls instead. Adobe documents both approaches in its guide to creating lists.

To add another item, place the cursor at the end of a list paragraph and press Enter on Windows or Return on macOS. To end a style-driven list, apply a paragraph style that has no bullet or numbering settings.

Change the bullet and its appearance
Select the list paragraphs and open the Bullets and Numbering controls. Choose a different bullet character, then adjust its alignment and spacing as needed. InDesign supports choosing glyphs as bullets; the available glyphs depend on the selected font. See Adobe’s instructions for adding or changing bullet characters.
By default, a bullet inherits formatting from the first character in its paragraph. If the first character’s formatting differs between items, the bullets can look inconsistent. Apply a character style to the bullets to give them a consistent appearance.

Set the hanging indent and text spacing
In the list settings, use Left Indent, First Line Indent, and Tab Position to place the marker, align wrapped lines, and set the gap between the bullet and the text. A positive Left Indent paired with an equal negative First Line Indent creates a hanging indent: the bullet sits to the left of the list text, while wrapped lines align with the text rather than the marker.

Increase Left Indent to move the list text and wrapped lines inward.
-
Use First Line Indent to position the first line, including its bullet, relative to the other lines.
-
Adjust Tab Position to control the space between the bullet and the start of the text.

Format nested and continuing lists
Make a simple nested list
For a basic sublevel, increase the Left Indent on the relevant list paragraphs and adjust the bullet style if the hierarchy needs a different marker. For a reusable multilevel structure, define a list and create a paragraph style for each level. Adobe explains the settings in its guide to creating multilevel lists.
Continue a list across stories or documents
If a list must continue across separated paragraphs, stories, or documents, define the list and apply it through paragraph styles. Adobe’s documentation covers defining and managing lists and creating a running list. For numbered lists, sequence and multilevel options are separate controls; Adobe documents them in its guides to numbered-list options and multilevel lists.

InDesign’s automatic bullets are generated markers, not characters inserted into the text, so the Type tool cannot select them as ordinary text. If another workflow requires literal bullet characters, select the paragraphs and choose the appropriate Convert Bullets to Text or Convert Bullets and Numbering to Text command from the Paragraph panel menu. After conversion, the markers are text and no longer function as automatically generated list markers. Adobe explains this distinction in its list guide.
