An older iPhone that feels slow after an iOS update may have a network problem, nearly full storage, Low Power Mode enabled, temperature-related throttling, unfinished post-update work, or an aging battery. Diagnose the symptom first, then apply the matching fix—rather than assuming the update permanently slowed every part of the phone.

First, identify what “slow” means

Different symptoms point to different causes. A web page that takes a long time to load is not the same problem as an app that opens slowly while offline, a scrolling animation that drops frames, a phone that feels hot, or a battery that now runs down sooner. Apple’s guidance separates network conditions, storage, power settings, temperature, post-update activity, and battery condition, so use the symptom that you can reproduce as your starting point.

What you notice Most relevant checks What the result tells you
Web pages, cloud content, or online apps load slowly Try a different Wi-Fi network or location; compare with cellular data The connection, location, congestion, or carrier may be the bottleneck rather than the iPhone’s processor.
Apps launch slowly or scrolling feels less smooth even when offline Check free internal storage, Low Power Mode, and battery condition Local storage pressure, power restrictions, or battery performance management may be involved.
The phone is warm and performance changes while it is warm Move it to a moderate-temperature environment and allow post-update work to finish Temperature protection or background update tasks can temporarily affect performance.
Battery life is markedly worse after the update Wait a few days, then review usage and Battery Health Background update tasks may still be running, or an aged battery may need service.

Keep the exact iPhone model and installed iOS version in mind while you work through the checks. The menu wording for battery health differs between iPhone 14-and-earlier models and iPhone 15-and-later models.

Rule out a slow internet connection

Many iPhone apps depend on an internet connection. Network congestion, a weak Wi-Fi link, or the phone reconnecting to cellular towers can make an app appear slow even when the device itself is operating normally. Apple’s current troubleshooting steps are in If your iPhone or iPad is running slow (September 16, 2026).

Compare another location or Wi-Fi network

  1. Use the same app in another location, preferably where you know Wi-Fi is reliable.
  2. Compare the result on Wi-Fi and cellular data, or compare two different Wi-Fi networks.
  3. Test more than one online app or web page so that a single service outage is not mistaken for an iPhone problem.

If performance improves on another network or in another location, focus on the connection rather than deleting apps or changing phone settings. If cellular data remains slow across locations, Apple advises contacting your carrier. A network test cannot diagnose slow offline app launches, so continue with the local checks if those remain sluggish.

Free internal storage before changing anything else

Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Apple’s slow-device guidance uses the generic “Device Storage” wording in its documentation and recommends maintaining at least 1 GB of free space to avoid slowdowns. The amount is a floor, not a promise that every phone with more than 1 GB free will feel fast.

Use the built-in recommendations

  1. Review the storage bar and the list of apps and data in Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Apply the recommendations shown on that screen, starting with items you can remove or move without losing important information.
  3. Recheck the available space after each substantial change instead of making many irreversible deletions at once.

Offload versus delete

Action What it removes When it fits
Offload App Removes the app itself while keeping its documents and data You need space but may reinstall the app later with its stored data intact.
Delete App Removes the app and its related data You are certain you no longer need the app or have another copy of its data.

Choose the option deliberately. Offloading frees app storage without discarding the app’s documents and data; deleting is more thorough but can remove data associated with that app. Do not treat an external storage accessory as a substitute for freeing internal iPhone storage: the space relevant to this check is the device’s own storage.

Do not force-close every app

Routine force-closing is not a speed-maintenance step. Apple states: “Force closing apps unnecessarily can slow down your device. Reopening a closed app takes longer because it has to reload all its data.” Leave normally behaving apps alone so they do not have to rebuild their data every time you open them.

Force-close an app when it is not responding or is stuck, then open that app again. If one app repeatedly hangs while the rest of the phone behaves normally, treat it as an app-specific fault rather than repeatedly closing every app in the app switcher.

Check Low Power Mode and temperature

Turn off Low Power Mode when you need unrestricted performance

Low Power Mode can disable some features or make some operations work more slowly. If you are judging the phone’s normal performance, leave it off for the test. Check the battery settings and disable Low Power Mode, then repeat the same app-launch or scrolling task under comparable conditions. You can re-enable it when battery preservation matters; the point is to avoid evaluating speed while its restrictions are active.

Move the iPhone away from temperature extremes

An iPhone can run more slowly when it is too hot or too cold. Remove it from a hot car, direct sun, or another extreme environment and let it return to a moderate temperature before judging performance. Do not use a temperature-related slowdown as evidence that the iOS update permanently reduced performance. If speed returns after the phone reaches a normal temperature, the immediate cause was environmental.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow the update’s background work to finish

An iOS update can leave update-related tasks running in the background after the phone is usable. Apple says this activity can affect battery life and thermal performance for a while. That can make an older phone feel warm or less responsive immediately after updating.

For a battery-life drop after an update, Apple’s advice is to wait a few days and check again, as stated in If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly (September 18, 2026). This is a waiting period for observation, not a guarantee that every performance issue will disappear after a fixed number of days. Continue checking storage, Low Power Mode, temperature, and battery condition rather than assuming all slowness is temporary.

Make the follow-up check useful

  • Repeat the same task you used before—such as opening a particular app or scrolling the same page—so the comparison is meaningful.
  • Note whether the phone is still warm when the task feels slow.
  • Compare battery behavior after the few-day period with the period immediately after the update.
  • If the same offline slowdowns persist, proceed to the battery-health check instead of waiting indefinitely.

Check battery health and performance management

A chemically aged battery can lose its ability to deliver maximum instantaneous power. Apple explains that iOS may dynamically manage the maximum performance of some system components when conditions require it, helping prevent unexpected shutdowns. The visible effects can include longer app launch times and lower frame rates while scrolling; the effect varies with the device and the degree of management. An older iPhone is not automatically being throttled, and the update alone does not prove that the battery caused the change.

Open the correct Battery Health screen

iPhone group Menu path What to look for
iPhone 14 and earlier Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging Read the battery condition information and check whether the screen shows Service.
iPhone 15 and later Settings > Battery > Battery Health Read the battery condition information and check whether the screen shows Service.

Apple’s current battery-performance explanation is available at iPhone battery and performance (June 1, 2026). If the Battery Health screen shows Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement. A replacement can help when persistent performance effects are caused by a sufficiently aged battery, but it cannot fix a poor Wi-Fi connection, a defective app, or a phone that is still too hot.

Model group Design figure How to interpret it
iPhone 14 models and earlier 80% of original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles A design specification, not a diagnosis of an individual used phone.
iPhone 15 models 80% of original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles Also an ideal-condition design specification; actual capacity depends on use and charging.

These figures do not mean every battery reaches exactly 80% at the stated cycle count, nor do they identify the cause of a specific slowdown. Use the Battery Health screen, the presence of a Service message, and the symptoms you can reproduce together.

Run a controlled comparison

Before concluding that the update changed performance, make the comparison repeatable. Choose one app that can be tested offline and one task that previously felt slow, such as opening the app or scrolling the same content. Perform the task with Low Power Mode off, after the phone has returned to a moderate temperature, and with at least 1 GB of storage available. Repeat it once on Wi-Fi and once with the network unavailable. Online-only delays that change between networks point toward connectivity; an offline delay that remains consistent points toward local conditions such as storage, power limits, or battery performance management.

Write down the model, iOS version, available storage, whether the phone feels warm, and the exact Battery Health message. Also note whether one app is affected or several. This record prevents a temporary post-update heat or background-work effect from being confused with a persistent battery issue, and it gives Apple or an authorized provider a specific sequence to reproduce.

Do not compare an app launch immediately after force-closing it with a launch from its normal suspended state. Apple notes that reopening a force-closed app takes longer because its data must reload, so that test can create the appearance of a problem that routine use does not produce.

A practical diagnosis sequence

Use this order to avoid making an irreversible change before identifying the likely cause.

  1. Classify the symptom. Decide whether the delay is online loading, offline app launch or scrolling, heat, or battery runtime.
  2. Test the network path. Try another Wi-Fi network or location and compare cellular data. Contact the carrier if cellular problems persist across locations.
  3. Check storage. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and create at least 1 GB of free space. Prefer offloading when you need to preserve app documents and data.
  4. Stop routine force-closing. Close only an app that is not responding; do not clear the entire app switcher as maintenance.
  5. Remove power and temperature variables. Turn off Low Power Mode for the test and let a hot or cold phone return to a moderate temperature.
  6. Account for update timing. If the update was recent, observe battery and heat for a few days while repeating the same task. Background work may still be running.
  7. Check Battery Health. Use the menu for your model group and look for a Service indication or persistent effects consistent with an aged battery.
  8. Choose service only when the evidence points there. If Service is shown or battery-related performance effects persist, compare Apple or authorized-service options for your exact model and location.

When battery service is the sensible next step

Battery replacement is most relevant when the phone remains slow during offline tasks after storage is available, Low Power Mode is off, temperature is normal, and the Battery Health screen indicates Service or shows signs of substantial aging. Apple identifies battery replacement as a possible remedy when persistent performance effects stem from a sufficiently aged battery.

Use Apple or an authorized provider for the exact iPhone model and your location. Availability, pricing, and repair options vary by model and region, and the guidance here does not establish a universal price or a suitable third-party part. A power bank can extend runtime but does not increase the phone’s processing speed; an external storage device does not create free internal iPhone storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no general repair cost that applies to every older iPhone. The model, region, provider, and the service option offered determine the price, so check the current quote directly with Apple or an authorized provider. Avoid choosing a battery solely because a listing promises speed, since a replacement cannot correct network congestion, a full storage volume, temperature extremes, or an individual app fault.

Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder

  • Blaming the update before testing the connection: Online delays can follow congestion or tower reconnection and may disappear on another network.
  • Deleting apps without checking storage recommendations: Offloading preserves documents and data; deletion may not.
  • Force-closing everything: Reopening closed apps requires data to reload and can add delay.
  • Testing while Low Power Mode is active: You are measuring restricted behavior rather than ordinary performance.
  • Judging a hot or cold phone: Temperature protection can change speed temporarily.
  • Expecting a fixed post-update deadline: Apple recommends waiting a few days for a battery-life change, but does not promise that all slowness will end on a specific day.
  • Treating a design capacity figure as a diagnosis: The 80%-at-500-cycle and 80%-at-1,000-cycle figures describe ideal-condition design expectations, not the exact condition of your battery.
  • Using the wrong comparison: Testing only an online app, or testing immediately after force-closing, cannot tell you whether offline system performance changed.
  • Buying accessories as a speed fix: A power bank addresses runtime, while external storage is not a replacement for free internal device storage.

What a successful fix should look like

After each change, repeat the same task and record what changed. A network-related fix should improve online loading without changing offline app launches. Freeing storage should affect local responsiveness, while turning off Low Power Mode should remove power-related restrictions during the test. A temperature fix should coincide with the phone returning to a moderate temperature. If only battery service resolves persistent offline delays and the Battery Health screen indicates Service, the battery—not the network or storage—was the most plausible limiting factor.

If none of these checks changes the specific symptom, document the model, iOS version, affected apps, whether the delay occurs offline, available storage, temperature, and Battery Health message before contacting Apple or an authorized service provider. That information gives support a reproducible problem instead of the broad description “the update made my phone slow.”

Frequently Asked Questions

How much free storage should an older iPhone have?

Apple recommends maintaining at least 1 GB of free internal storage to avoid slowdowns. Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage and use its recommendations. More than 1 GB is not a guarantee of speed, but falling below that floor is a useful first issue to correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I force-close every app after updating iOS?

No. Apple says unnecessary force-closing can slow the device because reopening an app requires its data to reload. Force-close an app only when it is stuck or not responding; leave normally working apps alone.

How long should I wait after an iOS update?

Apple advises waiting a few days and checking again when battery life drops after an update. Background update tasks can affect battery and thermal performance temporarily, but Apple does not promise that every slowdown will disappear on a fixed day.

Can Low Power Mode make an iPhone feel slower?

Yes. Low Power Mode can disable features or make some operations work more slowly. Turn it off while comparing the same app launch or scrolling task, then re-enable it when conserving battery matters.

Where is Battery Health on my iPhone?

On iPhone 14 and earlier, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. On iPhone 15 and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Check whether the screen shows Service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does an aging battery really affect speed?

A chemically aged battery may not deliver maximum instantaneous power. iOS can dynamically manage peak performance to help prevent unexpected shutdowns, with possible effects such as longer app launches and lower scrolling frame rates. The effect varies, and not every older iPhone is being throttled.

Will replacing the battery always make my iPhone faster?

No. Replacement can help when persistent offline performance effects come from a sufficiently aged battery, especially when Battery Health shows Service. It cannot fix slow Wi-Fi, cellular congestion, a full storage volume, a defective app, or temperature-related slowdown.

What do Apple’s 80% battery figures mean?

Apple describes 80% of original capacity at 500 complete cycles for iPhone 14 models and earlier, and 80% at 1,000 cycles for iPhone 15 models, under ideal conditions. These are design figures, not a diagnosis of an individual phone.

Will a power bank or external drive make the phone faster?

A power bank can extend runtime but does not increase processing speed. External storage is not the same as freeing the iPhone’s internal storage, which is the storage relevant to Apple’s slowdown guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if cellular data is slow everywhere?

Compare more than one location and network first. If cellular data remains slow across locations, Apple advises contacting your carrier. A network problem should not be treated as evidence that the iPhone’s processor or battery is failing.

The Bottom Line

Separate online delays from offline slowness, keep at least 1 GB of internal storage free, avoid routine force-closing, test with Low Power Mode off and the phone at a moderate temperature, and allow a few days for post-update background work. If persistent offline slowdowns coincide with a Battery Health Service message, ask Apple or an authorized provider about model-specific battery service.
