To make an LLM write more like an aircraft manual, ask it to use ASD-STE100-inspired controlled English: short sentences, one idea per sentence, active voice, and consistent wording. Andrej Karpathy’s suggestions, as reported by Search Engine Journal on October 2, 2026, also include asking for a diagram, an HTML page, or a custom explainer video. These choices change how you read and review an answer; none guarantees that its facts are correct.
What does “write like an aircraft manual” mean?
It means asking for language shaped by ASD-STE100, also known as Simplified Technical English (STE), a controlled technical-writing standard associated with aircraft maintenance documentation. Its rules and restricted vocabulary aim to make technical writing clearer and more consistent. Search Engine Journal reported in 2026 that the standard’s dictionary contains about 900 approved words; that figure is reported by the publication, rather than independently confirmed here.
Karpathy’s reported point is that models can work with the standard’s “heavy constraints on clean writing style” to make text “a lot more readable.” He sometimes asks for “80% of the way to ASD-STE100,” describing the full standard as stringent. Those are his observations, not results from a measured readability test.
STE is not a universal style guide. Search Engine Journal reports that the standard’s FAQ says it is not intended for general writing. You can borrow selected habits—short sentences, one topic per sentence, and active voice—without claiming the result is STE-compliant.

How to prompt an LLM for clearer prose
Give the model a defined audience and task, then name the writing constraints. For example:
Explain how a home router assigns an IP address to a non-specialist. Use short, direct sentences. Put one main idea in each sentence. Prefer active voice. Use the same term for the same thing throughout. Define technical terms before using them. Do not remove important conditions or exceptions. After writing, list any facts that need verification.This asks for an STE-inspired explanation, not certification or strict compliance with ASD-STE100. If accuracy matters, check technical claims against trustworthy documentation and review whether simplifying the language changed the meaning.

Which output format should you ask for?
Karpathy’s reported suggestions cover four formats. Choose based on what the reader needs to inspect, and review the content in that format rather than treating presentation as proof.

When is a diagram better than prose?
Ask for a diagram when the explanation depends on relationships or sequence: for example, how data moves between components or how steps connect in a process. A visual can make those relationships easier to scan, but it can also make a mistaken connection look authoritative.

Specify what the diagram should show and who will read it. Then verify the labels and relationships against a reliable source. The reported suggestion does not include an accuracy test showing that model-generated diagrams are more reliable than prose.
When does an HTML explainer help?
HTML can combine sections, links, visualizations, and interactive elements in one explainer. Thariq Shihipar’s May 20, 2026 Claude Code post describes its usefulness for richer visualization, navigation, interaction, and sharing in his team’s workflow. It is a practitioner account, not a controlled comparison showing that HTML is always better than Markdown.

Ask for a self-contained page when readers benefit from exploring or navigating the explanation. Review its facts as you would prose, and test its interactive behavior. More layout and functionality can also mean more implementation details to check.

Can an LLM make a custom explainer video?
Karpathy’s reported example asks for a “3b1b style” explainer video and mentions an ElevenLabs API key for narration. Narration through that service is optional: the article says users can ask for free local alternatives. The example is a format suggestion, not evidence that every model can produce a finished, accurate video without additional tools or review.

Review the narration and visuals together. Check that the sequence teaches the intended idea, that labels and diagrams match what is being said, and that no simplification makes a key point misleading.
What a community STE-inspired tool can—and cannot—do
The danyuchn/asd-ste100-skill GitHub project applies selected STE-inspired rules to agent-facing text. Its README says the tool excludes the official dictionary and is not intended for marketing copy. It also warns that its structural linter cannot prove a rewrite retained the original meaning.
That makes the project a helper for applying some writing constraints, not a substitute for ASD-STE100 or a factual reviewer. The repository does not establish official endorsement by the standard’s maintainers.
Why review still matters
None of these formats establishes truth by itself. A concise explanation can omit a qualification; a diagram can connect the wrong parts; an HTML page can present incorrect information neatly; and a video can make an error memorable. Match the review to the output, and verify important claims against authoritative sources.
Search Engine Journal attributes this framing to Karpathy: “a lot more of our work will rise up the abstractions into oversight and understanding.” The useful shift is toward choosing how an explanation is presented while keeping people responsible for judging whether it is accurate and complete.
