To publish an unlisted app, prepare it for final distribution, submit it to App Review, note in Review Notes that you want unlisted distribution, and send Apple’s unlisted app distribution request. Before requesting, make sure the app’s distribution method is set to Public in App Store Connect. If Apple approves the request, the method changes to Unlisted and Apple provides a direct link. That link limits discovery—not access: anyone who gets it can access the app.
What unlisted distribution does—and does not do
An unlisted app remains on the App Store, but Apple omits it from search results, categories, recommendations, charts, and other store listings. People can access it through a direct link, and it can also be accessed through Apple Business or Apple School Manager. Apple describes unlisted apps as “available to anyone who has access to the link.” Apple Developer: Unlisted App Distribution

This model suits apps meant for a limited audience that should not be publicly discoverable, such as employees, franchisees, business partners, higher-education students, or conference attendees. It is not private, invite-only, or password-protected distribution. If you need to restrict who can use the app, enforce authorization in the app itself.
Check whether unlisted distribution is the right choice
| Distribution choice | Discoverability | Audience control | Typical delivery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public | Available in App Store listings and search | Broad availability | App Store |
| Unlisted | Not shown in listings or search; available by direct link | Anyone with the link can access it | App Store link; also accessible through Apple Business or Apple School Manager |
| Private | Not generally available to the public | Limited to specified businesses or organizations | Apple Business or Apple School Manager |
Unlisted distribution is the appropriate option when your intended audience can receive and use a link, but you do not want the app surfaced in public App Store discovery. Choose private distribution when availability must be limited to specified organizations. Apple explains distribution methods in Set distribution methods.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Requirements before you request an unlisted link
- The app must already be on the App Store or be ready for final distribution and submitted to App Review. Apple declines requests for apps that have not been submitted to App Review or are in beta or prerelease status.
- In the submission’s Review Notes, state that the app is intended for unlisted distribution.
- Before submitting the request, the app’s distribution method in App Store Connect must be Public.
- You need the Account Holder, Admin, or App Manager role to manage distribution methods in App Store Connect.
How to publish an unlisted app on the App Store
- Prepare the app for final distribution. Complete the app and its submission materials, then submit the build to App Review. Beta and prerelease apps are not eligible for an unlisted distribution request.
- Add a note for App Review. In the submission’s Review Notes, say that the app is intended for unlisted distribution.
- Confirm the distribution method is Public. In App Store Connect, open the app’s Pricing and Availability settings and check its distribution method. It must be Public before you submit the request. The documented roles for managing this setting are Account Holder, Admin, and App Manager. See Apple’s distribution-method instructions.
- Submit Apple’s unlisted app distribution request. Use the request process linked from Apple’s Unlisted App Distribution page.
- After approval, retrieve and share the link. Apple changes the distribution method to Unlisted in Pricing and Availability and generates a link for the App Store and Apple Business or Apple School Manager. If the app was already available on the App Store, its existing App Store link remains the same. Unlisted status applies to future app versions.
- Set up any access controls your audience needs. Because anyone with the link can access the app, use an in-app authorization mechanism if it is intended only for particular users. If you distribute a shortened URL, test that it resolves to the correct App Store link.
What changes if the app is already privately distributed?
A privately distributed app cannot simply be switched to unlisted by changing its existing distribution setting. For an app distributed privately through Apple Business or Apple School Manager, Apple says to create a new App Store Connect app record, upload the binary, set distribution to Public, and then request unlisted distribution. Apple also says a move between private and public distribution generally requires a new app record and resubmission; a public app can be changed to unlisted. Review Apple’s current unlisted distribution guidance and distribution-method instructions for the applicable path.

Apple’s general publishing guidance says an approved app can take up to 24 hours to go live on the App Store. That is general post-approval availability guidance, not a timeline for Apple’s decision on an unlisted distribution request. Apple does not state a request-approval timeline on the procedural pages cited here. See Overview of publishing your app on the App Store.
