Start in Settings by searching for Font size and Display size. Adjust each slider separately and check its preview: one enlarges text, while the other changes the size of interface elements. If those changes are not enough, look at accessibility options such as bold text, magnification, color adjustments and Extra dim. The exact controls vary by tablet maker and Android version, and some apps do not follow system-wide settings.
The best result usually comes from matching one setting to one problem instead of turning on every option at once. Make a change, open the apps and content you actually read, and decide whether it improved comfort, contrast or visibility. You can then keep, refine or undo that change.
Choose the setting that fits what is hard to read
Android offers several ways to improve readability, but they do different jobs. If nearly all text looks too small, increase font size. If buttons and other interface elements are also hard to see or tap, try display size. For a small section that is difficult to read only now and then, magnification can enlarge that region without making the whole interface bigger. If the problem is contrast, glare or color perception, test the relevant display and accessibility options instead.

Increase font size and display size
Try these controls before changing other settings. They are the most direct way to make ordinary system text and interface elements larger.

- Open Settings and search for Font size.
- Move the font-size slider until text is comfortable to read. Use the preview to judge the effect rather than aiming for the largest setting automatically.
- Return to Settings search and look for Display size.
- Adjust that slider separately, then check its preview. This changes the size of interface elements, not just text.
- Open the apps you use most and check headings, buttons, menus and longer passages. Keep or refine the settings based on those real screens.
Font size and display size are separate controls: increasing one does not necessarily produce the same result as increasing the other. A larger display size may make controls easier to see but also changes how much content fits on screen. A larger font can improve text without making every interface element as large.
Google notes that font-size changes do not apply to some apps. If text remains small in a particular app, that does not necessarily mean the tablet setting failed; the app may not use the system setting. Check that app for its own text or display controls, if available.
On supported Android versions, Google documents a font-size control in Quick Settings that can enlarge text up to 200%. This is a maximum for that control, not a recommendation to use that size. A very large setting may make some screens harder to navigate, so use the preview and the apps that matter to you.

Some readers prefer a modest font increase with a larger display size, while others need larger text but want more information to remain visible. There is no universal “correct” combination. If a control, dialog or menu becomes clipped after an adjustment, reduce the setting slightly and check whether the app offers a separate text option.
Make text stand out with bold or contrast settings
If text is large enough but still difficult to distinguish from its background, try a text-contrast option. Google documents bold text under Accessibility > Display size and text. The feature may not be present under that exact name on every tablet, and some apps may not apply it.
Google says Outline text requires Android 16 or later. On Android 15 and earlier, its guidance points users to high-contrast text instead. Feature availability and labels can differ by device, so use Settings search for terms such as Bold text, Outline text or High contrast if the documented menu is missing.
After changing a text-contrast setting, check more than one screen. A setting that improves labels or menus may not have the same effect on every app or background. If the change makes some content less clear, turn it off and try another option rather than stacking settings blindly.
Contrast controls are most useful when size is not the only obstacle. Read a paragraph, inspect small labels and look at text over both light and dark backgrounds. If one app improves while another does not, that is an app-support difference rather than a reason to keep raising the system setting.

Use magnification for occasional small content
Magnification is useful when most of the tablet is readable but a small detail is not—for example, a label, a map detail or a section of a webpage. Unlike font size or display size, it enlarges a view of part of the screen instead of changing the size of interface elements everywhere. Google documents magnification of up to 8×.
- Open Settings and search for Magnification.
- Open the magnification controls and choose the available full-screen or partial-screen mode that suits you.
- Configure an available magnification shortcut so it is convenient to activate when needed.
- Try the shortcut in an app with small content, then turn magnification off when you want to return to the normal view.
The available modes and shortcut controls can vary. If your tablet’s search results do not match those descriptions, open the accessibility settings and look for the magnification option there. A magnified view can help inspect details, but it shows less of the screen at once; it is not a substitute for increasing the whole interface when everything is too small.
Full-screen magnification enlarges the entire current view, whereas partial-screen magnification keeps some surrounding context visible. If your tablet offers both, try each with the same page. A shortcut is worthwhile only if it is easy to activate without interrupting reading, so test it before relying on it for frequent tasks. Remember that magnification is a temporary viewing aid; it does not change an app’s underlying text size.

Test dark theme and color inversion separately
Dark theme and color inversion are not interchangeable. Dark theme changes the system interface and apps that support it; it does not change media such as videos. Color inversion applies to everything, including media. That difference matters if you read webpages with images, view photos or watch video while using the tablet.
To test dark theme, look in Settings for Dark theme or Dark mode. You can also search Settings if the menu name or location differs. Check the specific apps you use, because unsupported apps may not change. Google also describes an expanded dark-theme option in Android 16 and warns that it can affect app appearance. The result may vary from screen to screen, so judge it by legibility in your actual reading apps rather than assuming a dark background will help everywhere.
Color inversion is an accessibility option. Search Settings for Color inversion to find it if available, then inspect the pages and media you normally use. Because inversion affects images and video as well as interface colors, it can make some content less natural or harder to interpret. Google cautions that inversion and Android 16’s expanded dark theme can affect color quality or legibility.
Google notes that dark theme may make some screens easier to read and may save battery on some screens. Neither effect is guaranteed for every tablet or display. On some phones, Battery Saver can turn on dark theme automatically; tablet behavior can differ.
Do not judge either option from the Settings screen alone. Open a supported reading app, an app that does not support dark theme, a webpage with photographs and a video. This quick check reveals whether the change helps the material you consume. If inverted photos or video look confusing, color inversion is probably the wrong tool even if it improves a particular menu.

Consider color correction, grayscale and Extra dim
Color correction and grayscale may help people with color blindness or difficulty distinguishing certain colors. Look under Accessibility or search Settings for Color correction. Google says color correction is not available on all devices. If you use it, check charts, icons, photos and other color-dependent content in your regular apps to see whether the change helps.
Extra dim lowers screen brightness beyond the device’s ordinary minimum. It can be useful when the lowest standard brightness still feels too bright. Search Settings for Extra dim if you cannot find it through the displayed menus. Google’s documented Pixel navigation differs between Pixel 10 and later models and Pixel 9 and earlier models; those Pixel paths should not be assumed to apply to other manufacturers’ tablets.
Extra dim changes brightness, not text size or contrast. If text itself is hard to distinguish, adjust font size or test a contrast option as well. Make one change at a time and check reading comfort in the conditions where you use the tablet.

Grayscale removes color rather than enlarging or sharpening text. It may simplify a screen for some readers, but it can also hide distinctions that depend on color. Check status indicators, charts and links before keeping it enabled. Likewise, Extra dim is a comfort setting for brightness; it cannot correct an app whose text is too small or whose colors have insufficient contrast.
Listen to text—and know the Reading mode limitation
Android lists Select to Speak among its accessibility options. Search Settings for that name to see whether it is available on your tablet and review the on-device setup instructions. It is an option to explore when listening is more useful than enlarging text; availability and controls can vary by device.
Do not assume Google’s Reading mode is available on an Android tablet. Google currently describes it as available only on Android phones. Its documentation says Android 9 or later is required, but that requirement does not make the feature tablet-compatible. Reading mode is intended for supported long-form content such as websites and apps with long articles; it does not support PDFs, email, chat messages or social feeds.
This distinction prevents a common troubleshooting mistake: installing or searching for Reading mode repeatedly when the tablet is not a supported device. For tablet reading, first check whether Select to Speak or the app’s own read-aloud feature is offered. If you need to read a PDF, email or chat, Reading mode’s documented content limits would not cover it even on a compatible phone.

- Record your starting point. Open a frequently used reading app and note whether the main problem is tiny text, tiny controls, weak contrast, excessive brightness or color confusion.
- Set font size. Search Settings, adjust the slider and read the preview. Check a long passage as well as a short label.
- Set display size if needed. Use its separate preview and inspect navigation controls, buttons and menus.
- Address contrast. Try bold text, outline text on Android 16 or later, or high-contrast text where the tablet provides it.
- Add targeted help. Configure magnification for occasional details, or try color correction, grayscale or Extra dim for the specific issue.
- Recheck every important app. Some apps ignore system font or theme settings, so confirm the result in the apps you actually use.
Changing one setting at a time also makes it easier to reverse an unhelpful choice. Keep the preview open where available, then test real pages, menus, images and video before deciding that a feature works for you.
When a setting is missing or has no effect
Android version, tablet maker and device model affect both the features available and the names or locations of menus. Google says some text and display steps work only on Android 13 and later; outline text needs Android 16 or later. A missing control may therefore reflect the device or software version, rather than a problem with your settings.
- Can’t find the menu: Search in Settings for the feature name, such as Font size, Magnification or Extra dim. Menu paths can differ by manufacturer.
- One app ignores larger text: Google says font-size changes do not apply to some apps. Check that app’s own settings, if it has them.
- A color change makes content worse: Check the effect on webpages, photos and video. Dark theme and color inversion affect different parts of the display.
- An option is unavailable: Check your Android version and the tablet maker’s settings. Some features have version requirements or are not supported on all devices.
- The whole screen still feels cramped: Review display size as well as font size, or try magnification for specific details.
Because the model and Android version determine the exact menus, there is no single navigation path that applies to every Android tablet. Settings search is usually the most practical way to find a feature when a documented path does not match your screen.

If a change appears to do nothing, test it in a system screen and in a second app. That helps distinguish a device-wide setting from an app that does not support it. If only one app remains difficult, look for that app’s own text, zoom, theme or display controls rather than assuming the tablet needs a stronger global setting.

Should I increase font size or display size first?
Start with font size when the main problem is reading words. Add display size when buttons, icons and other interface elements are also too small. They are separate controls, so use their previews and test both in your regular apps.
Why did larger text fail in one app?
Google states that the font-size setting does not apply to some apps. The app may use its own text system. Check its settings for a text-size or zoom control, if provided, and remember that other apps may still respond normally.
How much can Android enlarge text?

Is dark theme the same as color inversion?
No. Dark theme affects the system interface and supported apps and does not change media such as videos. Color inversion affects everything, including images and video, so it can change the appearance of content that dark theme leaves untouched.
Can I use Reading mode on my Android tablet?

No single menu path or feature list applies to every model. Android version, manufacturer and device affect availability and labels. Settings search is the safest way to locate a control, and the app itself may still ignore a system-wide option.
