The safest approach is to filter interruptions rather than silence your phone completely. Turn on Do Not Disturb or a custom Mode, allow the people, conversations, apps, alarms and other alerts you actually need, and use Digital Wellbeing Focus mode to pause apps that tempt you to check your phone. Because Android menus and features differ by phone, Android version and app, verify the exceptions on the device you rely on.
Use the right control for the kind of distraction
Android has several controls that solve different problems. Do Not Disturb and Modes govern interruptions across the phone. Focus mode prevents selected apps from being used and from sending notifications while it is active. Individual app and conversation settings provide narrower control. Notification history helps you recover alerts after the fact, while notification cooldown reduces repeated sound and pop-up interruptions during a burst.

Start with the smallest control that solves your problem. If social alerts are the problem but calls and work messages matter, a filtered Mode is more appropriate than muting every notification. If the problem is opening video, shopping or social apps repeatedly, Focus mode addresses the app use itself rather than only the alert.

Set up Do Not Disturb or a custom Mode
Open the mode settings
- Open Settings.
- Look for Modes or Do Not Disturb. On supported versions, Google’s documented path is Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb.
- Use Do Not Disturb for a general quiet rule. Create a custom Mode if you want a separate configuration for work, study, commuting or sleep.
Labels and locations are not identical on every Android phone. Some Mode instructions apply only to Android 14 and later, and a phone maker can present the controls differently. If you cannot find Modes, search Settings for “Do Not Disturb” and “notification filters.”

Choose notification filters deliberately
Open the selected mode’s Notification filters. Decide each category separately instead of accepting a broad allow list:
- People and calls: allow the contacts or callers whose calls must reach you. If you need a safety net for an unexpected call, consider the repeat-caller option.
- Repeat callers: Google’s documented rule allows two calls from the same person within 15 minutes. This is a specific setting, not a guarantee that every phone will expose the same wording.
- Conversations: allow only the message threads that matter when the phone offers conversation-level choices.
- Apps: allow an entire app only when every alert from it deserves to interrupt you. For a single chat, use the conversation control described below instead.
- Alarms and reminders: keep alarms that you depend on, and decide whether calendar events or reminders should break through.
- Other interruptions: review the remaining categories shown by your phone. Critical system notifications, such as security notifications, can still appear.
A narrow exception list is easier to trust than an all-app allow list. If you allow a messaging app because of one person, you may restore every group-chat and marketing alert from that app.
Add a schedule or a temporary duration
For predictable quiet periods, create an automatic schedule in the mode’s schedule controls. Examples include a recurring study block or overnight period. When you turn Do Not Disturb on manually, set a duration if your phone offers one; a duration prevents a forgotten mode from continuing after the event that required it.
The exact schedule screen varies by device. Confirm the start and end times shown on your phone, especially if you travel or use a work calendar in another time zone.
Let one person or conversation through without opening the floodgates
Use conversation-level controls when available
Conversation controls are more precise than allowing an entire messaging application. When a supported conversation notification appears, touch and hold it and choose Important, Default or Silent.

- Important: Google says an Important conversation can notify even while Do Not Disturb is on.
- Default: follows the app’s normal notification behavior.
- Silent: keeps the notification out of sound and vibration interruptions while leaving it available in the notification shade.
Not every messaging app supplies these controls. If touch-and-hold does not show them, use the app’s own notification settings or allow the necessary people or app in the mode filter. Do not assume that a setting from one messaging app applies to another.
Decide whether repeat callers are appropriate
Repeat callers are useful when an urgent caller may not be in your contacts, but they can also let a persistent caller interrupt a quiet period. The documented Android rule is two calls from the same person within 15 minutes. Enable it only if that trade-off fits your situation; otherwise allow named contacts and rely on voicemail or another agreed emergency channel.
Pause attention-seeking apps with Focus mode
Configure the app list
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode.
- Select the apps you want to pause, such as the apps you check reflexively.
- Choose Turn on now for a manual session, or create a schedule for recurring quiet periods.
While Focus mode is active, selected apps cannot be used and their notifications are blocked. This makes it different from Do Not Disturb: Do Not Disturb filters interruptions, whereas Focus mode also removes access to the selected apps.
Keep urgent channels outside the pause list
Do not pause an app whose urgent alerts you need unless you have another dependable way to receive those alerts. For example, if an important work message arrives only through one app, leave that app available or arrange a different channel before scheduling Focus mode.
Use Take a break when you need temporary access during an otherwise scheduled session. Treat the break as an exception for a specific task, not as evidence that the schedule is ineffective.

Reduce notification bursts and recover what you dismissed
Turn on Notification history when your phone supports it
Open Settings > Notifications and look for Notification history. When available and enabled, it can show snoozed and recently dismissed notifications as well as the day’s notification history. It is a recovery tool, not a replacement for allowing a critical alert through: the notification may be easier to find later, but you did not hear it in real time.

Use Notification cooldown for bursts
If a busy group chat or a burst of app alerts is the distraction, look in notification settings for Notification cooldown. Google describes it as reducing sound and pop-up interruptions during a burst. Google’s documented exceptions include calls, alarms, priority conversations and emergency alerts.
Cooldown is useful when you still want notifications delivered but do not want every event in a rapid sequence to demand attention. It does not replace a mode filter for apps or people you never want interrupting you.
A practical setup sequence
Use this order so that broad controls do not accidentally override a carefully chosen exception:

- Identify the alerts that must be immediate. Write down the specific people, conversations, apps, alarms, reminders and calendar events that cannot wait.
- Create the quiet rule. Open Settings and configure Do Not Disturb or a custom Mode.
- Build the filter list. Allow only the required categories, then decide on repeat callers and the remaining interruption types.
- Add timing. Set a schedule for predictable quiet periods or a duration for a one-off session.
- Refine conversations. For a supported message thread, touch and hold its notification and set it to Important, Default or Silent.
- Pause distracting apps separately. In Settings > Digital Wellbeing > Focus mode, select apps that encourage checking and choose manual activation or a schedule.
- Prepare recovery. Enable Notification history if it is available, and enable Notification cooldown if bursts are the main problem.
- Run a real-device test. With the mode active, trigger a call, an important message, a calendar or alarm alert, and a notification from each app that must reach you.
Keep the test specific to your phone and accounts. Android Help documents variation by device, version and app, so a rule that sounds correct in general can behave differently on the handset you use.
Test and troubleshoot before relying on the setup
An allowed alert does not appear
- Check that the correct Mode is active and that its schedule has not ended.
- Reopen Notification filters and confirm the person, conversation, app or alert category is actually allowed.
- If it is a message, verify that the app supports conversation controls and that the thread is set to Important or the intended level.
- Check the app’s own notification permission and channel settings; a mode cannot deliver a notification that the app has disabled.
- Repeat the test with the phone unlocked and locked if your device exposes separate lock-screen behavior.
Too many distractions still get through
- Remove broad app allowances and replace them with a specific conversation or contact where possible.
- Review repeat callers; two calls from one person within 15 minutes are intentionally treated as an exception when that option is enabled.
- Check whether the alert is a critical system notification, an alarm or another category your filters leave enabled.
- If the problem is opening an app rather than hearing it, add that app to Focus mode instead of changing every notification rule.
You miss something after dismissing it
Open Notification history if your phone provides it. If history is unavailable, avoid depending on dismissal as a recovery method: change the mode filters, use an allowed conversation or arrange a second channel for alerts that cannot be missed.
A scheduled quiet period is not consistent
Confirm the schedule’s days, start time and end time on the phone itself. Check whether you created a custom Mode or edited Do Not Disturb, since they can have separate rules. If the feature is missing entirely, your Android version or device software may not support the documented control.

Study or focused work
Create a scheduled custom Mode that allows calls from selected people, one or two essential conversations, alarms and calendar events. Use Focus mode for the apps that invite casual checking. Leave notification history enabled so a dismissed alert can be reviewed later, and use Take a break only when a task requires a paused app.
Overnight quiet
Use a recurring Do Not Disturb schedule with alarms allowed. Decide whether selected contacts and repeat callers should be exceptions. Avoid allowing an entire messaging app solely because of one person; use an Important conversation when the app supports it.

Meeting or presentation
Use a manual duration rather than an open-ended switch. Allow only the people or alarms that genuinely need to interrupt, then test one call and one essential message before the meeting starts. A duration gives the phone a defined return to normal behavior.
What Android cannot guarantee uniformly
There is no single set of screens or capabilities shared identically by every Android phone. Google notes that settings vary by device, and some Modes instructions apply to Android 14 and later. App support also matters: conversation controls are not available in every messaging app, and notification history and cooldown are not exposed in the same way on every device.
For that reason, treat the labels in this guide as the documented Android names and paths, then confirm the equivalent controls on your handset. The reliable outcome comes from testing the exact people, apps and alert types you depend on, not from assuming that an exception is universal.

Keep the system trustworthy over time
- Review the exception list when you install a new messaging or work app.
- Remove contacts and apps that no longer need immediate access.
- Check schedules after changing time zones, work hours or sleep routines.
- Re-test after a major Android update or a messaging-app update, because version and app support can change.
- Keep at least one recovery path, such as Notification history when available, for alerts you may dismiss accidentally.
A phone is less distracting when most events wait for you, while a deliberately small set of alerts remains able to reach you. The combination of filtered Modes, conversation-level exceptions, Focus mode and a recovery option lets you tune that balance without muting everything.
