For a child under 13, start with an Amazon child profile—not Parental Controls on an adult profile. Use Parent Dashboard to choose what the child can access, then adjust the tablet’s accessibility settings for their reading, vision, or navigation needs. Amazon says features and menu options vary by device and marketplace, so check the tablet’s model and software when a control is unavailable.
Set up a child profile
Amazon directs caregivers to a child profile for children under 13. Its separate Parental Controls on an adult profile are intended for users 13 and older; they are not a substitute for a child profile. Amazon says creating a profile on a compatible device has no additional cost. See Amazon’s child profile guidance and adult-profile Parental Controls guidance.
Use the child profile for the child’s day-to-day experience, and keep the adult profile for caregiver settings and use. The exact profile-creation steps may differ across Fire models and software versions.

Parent Dashboard is where caregivers can manage a child profile’s content and settings, including age filters, web access, and screen-time controls. Amazon offers a browser version and a mobile app, and their available controls are not identical. Use the Dashboard’s relevant setting rather than relying on a single universal menu path; consult Amazon’s Parent Dashboard help for current options.

Review content before adding it
You can add eligible purchased Amazon content and subscription content to a child profile. Not every content type is supported. Amazon also cautions that some apps may contain advertisements, external links, in-app purchases, or requests for personal information. Review an app’s behavior and suitability before making it available to the child. Details are in Amazon’s child-profile content guidance.
Set web access and age filters deliberately
Age filters and web-access settings can help narrow what appears in a child profile, but they do not guarantee that every route to online material is appropriate. Amazon warns that turning off web access in a child profile may still leave access to some websites within content. Check both the profile settings and the apps or content you allow.

Make the interface easier to read and navigate
On the tablet, open Settings > Accessibility and review the options available on that device. Depending on the model and software, these may include text size, screen magnification, high-contrast text, and VoiceView spoken feedback. Choose only the changes that address the child’s needs; a larger display or spoken feedback can help one child while making navigation less convenient for another. Amazon’s accessibility help describes available options, but feature availability varies.

Voice Access has a narrower compatibility requirement than the general accessibility settings: Amazon documents it for Fire HD 10 (13th Generation) with the device language set to English. Do not assume it is available on other models or language settings.

Decide whether a protective case is useful
If the tablet is likely to be dropped or handled roughly, a kid-proof case is an optional physical safeguard, not a setup requirement. Amazon’s guide index lists a Fire Kids Kid-Proof Case. Before buying any case, verify that it fits the tablet’s exact model and generation; similar Fire names do not establish compatibility. See Amazon’s Fire case guide.

- Age: For a child under 13, use a child profile; Amazon describes adult-profile Parental Controls as intended for users 13 and older.
- Content and browsing: Decide which apps, media, and web access to allow, and review app features rather than assuming the profile makes all content suitable.
- Routine: Use the Dashboard’s screen-time and educational settings if you need them, noting that the browser and mobile app controls can differ.
- Usability: Test text size, magnification, contrast, and spoken feedback against the child’s individual needs.
- Compatibility: Check the tablet’s model, generation, software, and—in the case of Voice Access—language before expecting a feature or accessory to work.
