AI can draft an HTML email, but it cannot certify how that email will look in every inbox. Gmail may ignore unsupported CSS, and legacy Outlook for Windows uses Microsoft Word’s rendering engine, which has limited CSS support. Treat AI as a way to speed up the first draft; the acceptance test is how the finished message renders in the email clients your audience uses.

What to expect from AI-generated email code

A browser preview is not a reliable substitute for an inbox test. Email clients differ in their support for CSS, images, accessibility features, and dark mode, and even versions or user settings can change the result. Gmail documents that unsupported CSS may be ignored (Gmail CSS support); the NSW Government Email Toolkit describes client differences and recommends graceful degradation (NSW Email Toolkit).

Legacy Outlook for Windows deserves particular attention: its Word-based rendering engine and limited CSS support make it a different target from Outlook.com or newer Outlook surfaces. A conservative layout can reduce avoidable breakage, but no prompt or framework makes an email render identically everywhere.

1. Brief the AI before requesting code

Give the model the information it needs, and tell it to flag missing details rather than inventing them. Separate the message content from its presentation so the central information remains understandable if images or styling do not appear.

#1 Best Overall
HTML Developer Hardcover Journal, Black
  • A funny HTML Developer job title design for web page builders, markup specialists, email template developers, website coders and content publishers. Perfect for anyone who writes the markup by hand and picks exactly the right tag for the job every time.
  • A great design for a hardworking member of your site team which reads "Don't Panic I'm A Professional HTML Developer". When a page has to work on an ancient email reader and a new phone at once, they make both look right. Ideal gift for web coders.
  • Hardcover journal with 240 line-ruled pages (120 sheets)
  • Built-in elastic closure and ribbon bookmark
  • Includes an expandable inner storage pocket and a pen holder
  • Purpose and audience: what the email is for, who will receive it, and the single main action you want readers to take.
  • Copy: subject line, preheader, body text, and CTA wording.
  • Brand assets: approved colors and fonts, logo and image URLs, and meaningful alt text for each image.
  • Destination: the exact URL the CTA should open.
  • Technical constraints: approximate content width, target email clients, and any template or sending-platform requirements.

Ask for conservative email HTML or MJML, a plain-text alternative, and a short explanation of assumptions or risky choices. This is a practical prompt structure, not a validated prompt or a guarantee of successful rendering.

2. Request markup that degrades gracefully

For hand-authored HTML, ask for a simple table-based outer layout and inline CSS for essential styling. Include explicit image dimensions, useful alt text, readable fallback colors, and restrained responsive enhancements. Keep essential content independent of JavaScript and modern web-only layout features. Gmail supports a subset of CSS, and unsupported properties may be ignored; the NSW toolkit also recommends inline styles and table layouts for broad compatibility.

If you prefer an email-specific abstraction, MJML is an open-source markup language whose engine generates responsive email HTML. It can reduce manual table nesting, but the generated HTML still needs testing in real target clients.

A prompt might say: “Create a conservative HTML email for [audience] whose main goal is [action]. Use this copy: [copy]. Use only these approved colors and fonts: [brand styles]. Use these HTTPS image URLs and alt text: [assets]. Link the CTA to [destination]. Target [email clients] and follow [sending-platform constraints]. Use table-based structure and inline essential styles; include a plain-text version. Do not invent facts or assets. List missing inputs and explain any compatibility risks.” Put actual template variables in the marked fields before asking for final code.

3. Inspect the draft before testing it

AI can produce plausible-looking code with incorrect links, invented assets, or content that depends on images. Check the content and markup before spending time on client previews.

  • Confirm every link points to the intended destination and the CTA is a real link.
  • Verify image URLs are correct and use HTTPS; check that images have explicit dimensions and meaningful alt text.
  • Make sure no essential offer, instruction, or message appears only inside an image.
  • Inspect the mobile behavior and read the plain-text version as a complete message.
  • Remove any invented brand asset, price, offer, or legal claim.

The NSW toolkit recommends HTTPS image hosting, image dimensions, inline styles, and graceful degradation.

4. Check accessibility and readability

Use a sensible heading order, links whose purpose is clear out of context, useful alt text, and text that does not rely on color or images alone. Check contrast as well as whether the email remains understandable with images disabled. Section508.gov recommends using its accessibility checker in Outlook and gives a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 or greater when contrast is tested; that guidance is for U.S. federal email, so follow the accessibility requirements that apply to your own context (Accessible Email Messages).

Accessibility support also varies by client. The Email Markup Consortium’s 2026 report evaluates 37 core HTML/CSS features relevant to semantic and accessible email. In that report, Gmail clients scored 15/37 to 17/37 tested accessibility features, while Outlook variants ranged from 8/37 to 25/37. These are feature-support scores, not overall email-quality grades or percentages (Email Markup Consortium 2026 report).

5. Preview the message in the inboxes that matter

Send a test message to real inboxes or use a preview service. The NSW toolkit names these as minimum targets to consider: Outlook desktop, Gmail web and mobile, Apple Mail, Outlook.com, and Yahoo Mail. Prioritize the clients your audience actually uses; remember that legacy Outlook for Windows is not interchangeable with newer Outlook surfaces.

Check layout width, line breaks, button appearance, image behavior, mobile stacking, and dark-mode contrast. Fix the most consequential differences first, then retest after meaningful changes. A paid preview service is optional: Litmus documents workflows for testing pasted HTML or a test sent from an email service provider, but a service cannot guarantee every recipient’s display (Litmus email testing). The NSW toolkit also names Litmus and Email on Acid for broader previews; Email on Acid product documentation describes a transition to Mailgun Inspect, so confirm the current product name if you consider it (Litmus; Email on Acid product documentation).

6. Keep a plain-text fallback

A plain-text alternative helps readers and clients that do not display HTML well. For ordinary HTML email, include it as a useful counterpart to the styled message. AMP email has an additional, specific requirement: Google says an AMP message must include a fallback HTML or plain-text MIME part. That fallback may be shown when AMP cannot be displayed, including offline cases or after 30 days in Gmail; these AMP rules are not universal requirements for ordinary HTML email (Google AMP email requirements).
