To make an AI-built frontend feel less generic, replace its default decisions with choices grounded in the actual product: its users, tasks, content, existing visual language, and required states. Start by fixing purpose and hierarchy, then shared design foundations, responsive behavior, and polish. A different font or color palette alone cannot make an interface feel intentional.

What makes a frontend feel “AI-generated”?

“AI-generated” is a subjective description, not a measurable defect with a single visual cause. A page can feel generic when its layout, copy, controls, or decoration could belong to almost any product. The useful question is not which style to remove, but whether each design decision fits the people and task the page serves.

OpenAI’s frontend guidance says design should be tailored to an application’s domain and subject matter, and that work-focused interfaces should not automatically inherit the patterns of editorial or promotional pages. OpenAI’s frontend prompt instructions also emphasize preserving established conventions when working within an existing product.

How do I make my website look less AI-generated?

Use a repair sequence that starts with the product, not surface styling. InterfaceKit’s practitioner guide recommends moving from purpose and content to structure, shared foundations, states and responsive behavior, and finally decoration. That is practical guidance rather than a controlled study proving one sequence works best, but it helps prevent polishing a page whose underlying task is still unclear. InterfaceKit’s guide frames the goal as replacing generic decisions with product-specific ones.

1. Capture the current page and its behavior

Save screenshots at the viewport sizes your project supports, and note what the page does in meaningful conditions. InterfaceKit gives 1440px, 768px, and 390px as example widths; treat them as sample checkpoints, not universal breakpoint requirements. Record loading, empty, error, and populated states where those apply. A screenshot is useful for visual comparison, but it does not establish that routes, controls, or other behavior work.

2. Write a page contract

Before changing the interface, answer these questions for the specific page:

  • Who uses it, and what are they trying to accomplish?
  • What must they understand first, and what is the primary action?
  • Which content is real, and what content lengths should the layout support?
  • What can go wrong, and what loading, empty, or error states are needed?
  • Which routes, analytics, interactions, and keyboard-accessible behaviors must remain intact?

This brief gives the implementation a concrete job. “Make a dashboard” is a page type; a description of the users, task, data, and constraints is a product brief.

3. Fix information architecture and hierarchy

Remove sections that do not help users complete the task. Make the primary action easy to find and put the information needed for that action where users can see it. Do not add cards, badges, statistics, or decorative containers simply to make a screen appear more designed. Their usefulness depends on the product and content, not on how readily they can be generated.

4. Reuse the product’s visual foundations

If the site already has a coherent design system, keep its recognizable patterns rather than applying a fresh style just to make the page look different. Define or reuse a small set of shared tokens for page and surface backgrounds, primary and muted text, accents, and typography roles. Apply them through shared components so related routes remain consistent.

OpenAI’s practical design guidance recommends giving a model clear constraints, visual references, real content, and reusable design tokens. A reference screenshot can communicate spacing and visual direction more clearly than a vague request to make the page “modern,” but it should be a relevant example rather than an instruction to copy a different product wholesale. See OpenAI’s frontend design guidance.

5. Specify responsive behavior and complete states

Check realistic long and short content, narrow viewports, and the states users will actually encounter. Text and controls should not overlap, disappear, or unexpectedly shift the layout. State what should happen when data is missing or a request fails, rather than allowing the interface to show a polished but misleading empty shell.

6. Polish after the page works as a product

Refine type, palette, imagery, and motion only after the task, hierarchy, and states make sense. Choose treatments that fit the domain and existing brand. No single aesthetic—including minimalism, gradients, or a particular typeface—proves that an interface is high quality.

How do I make the frontend look less AI-generated?

Give the model and the implementation process constraints it can act on, then inspect the rendered result. A compact instruction might specify the page’s audience, task, primary action, real content, existing component conventions, required states, and supported viewport behavior. Attach a relevant reference when available, and name what must not change, such as route behavior or keyboard access.

Keep those constraints tied to the project rather than treating a prompt as a substitute for design decisions. If the page belongs to an established application, its existing controls, spacing, and navigation are part of the product’s visual language. OpenAI’s guidance covers both domain fit and continuity with existing conventions; its design article also recommends real content and tokens instead of leaving those choices open-ended.

How do I make an AI website not look like AI?

Review the page against product fit, not against a checklist of fashionable visual effects. For each change, ask whether it serves the user’s task, fits the existing system, improves the content hierarchy, remains accessible, handles the required states, and can be maintained across routes. These are practical decision criteria synthesized from the design and accessibility guidance, not a published scoring benchmark.

Accessibility is part of whether the page feels clear and usable. Check text contrast, understandable labels and feedback, visible focus, and grouping that helps people see relationships between content. W3C’s introductory guidance recommends whitespace and proximity to clarify those relationships, while its consistent-design pattern advises using a consistent visual design across groups of pages. See W3C’s web accessibility design tips and W3C’s consistent visual design pattern.

How do I make a website not look vibe coded?

Make the result reviewable and deliberate: compare the running page with the original and its reference, then exercise the interactions that matter. Look at desktop and mobile sizes, check that headings and spacing communicate relationships, and confirm controls behave consistently across related pages. Verify contrast, focus, and feedback as part of the same review rather than treating accessibility as a final coat of polish.

Use findings from that inspection to revise the page contract, tokens, components, or state handling as appropriate. Visual comparison can reveal inconsistencies, but it cannot replace interaction checks or validation with the people and requirements the product serves. The cited guidance supports this workflow; it does not establish that any particular repair guarantees a better result.
