Make the model provider a replaceable implementation, not a dependency scattered through your product. Define a small internal request-and-response contract, keep credentials, endpoints, deployment names, and model IDs in configuration, then implement one adapter per provider or put a gateway behind that contract. Finally, run the same application-specific acceptance suite and telemetry checks against every candidate. A common API can normalize routine calls, but it cannot make models feature-equivalent: streaming, tools, structured outputs, modalities, context limits, safety behavior, latency, and cost still require verification.
Start with a provider boundary
Your business logic should ask for an application capability such as “summarize this case and return a validated object,” not construct a vendor SDK request. The boundary receives your stable, provider-neutral input and returns a stable result or a defined error. Provider-specific code translates that contract into the selected service’s SDK call, HTTP request, model name, and response format.
This separation prevents a provider change from touching every workflow, prompt, controller, and background job. It also makes differences visible: an adapter can explicitly report that a target lacks a required tool-call mode instead of silently dropping a parameter.
What belongs inside the boundary
- Prompt or message content in the form your application actually uses.
- Generation controls your product depends on, such as temperature, token limits, or stop conditions.
- Optional streaming, tool definitions, structured-output schema, and modality fields only when the application needs them.
- A normalized response containing text or structured data, usage information when available, finish status, provider/model identity, and a typed error.
What must stay out of business logic
- SDK request and response classes.
- Provider model identifiers, deployment names, base URLs, API versions, and authentication headers.
- Provider-only parameter names and assumptions about retryable status codes.
- Parsing branches spread across unrelated features.
A narrow contract is safer than a supposedly universal abstraction. Do not promise support for a feature that your application does not use or that every target cannot implement.

Inventory every model dependency before designing the interface
Begin with a call inventory. Search production code, scheduled jobs, workers, tests, and administrative tools—not just the main web request path. Record what each call sends, what it expects back, and which behavior is essential.
| Area to inventory | Questions to answer | Why it affects portability |
|---|---|---|
| Input format | Are requests plain text, role-based messages, images, audio, or files? | Message and modality support differs by model and provider. |
| Output format | Is free-form text acceptable, or must output validate against a schema? | Structured-output mechanisms and strictness vary. |
| Tools | Does the model call functions, return parallel calls, or require a specific tool-choice mode? | Tool schemas, call IDs, and execution loops are not identical. |
| Streaming | Does the UI consume tokens or events incrementally? | Event names, buffering, cancellation, and usage reporting differ. |
| Context and limits | What is the largest prompt, completion, and conversation state? | A nominally compatible model may reject the request or truncate content. |
| Controls | Which sampling, reasoning, stop, seed, or safety controls are actually required? | Unsupported controls can cause errors or be ignored. |
| Operational needs | What latency, error, availability, and cost thresholds are acceptable? | A switch is not successful if user-visible behavior or economics fail. |
Mark each item as required, optional, or provider-specific. Required items become contract tests. Optional items need a defined fallback. Provider-specific items should be exposed through an explicit extension rather than hidden in a generic field.
Define a small internal request and response contract
Model the interface around your use cases, not around the largest provider API. A typical synchronous contract might contain:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ModelRequest {
messages: Message[],
response_format?: Schema,
tools?: Tool[],
stream?: boolean,
controls?: GenerationControls,
metadata?: Map<string, string>
}
ModelResult {
text?: string,
structured?: JsonValue,
tool_calls?: ToolCall[],
usage?: Usage,
finish_reason?: string,
provider: string,
model: string
}
The exact type names are up to your language. The important properties are stable semantics and explicit failure. For example, return a CapabilityNotSupported error when a provider cannot honor a required schema or tool mode. Do not silently remove the field and let downstream code process an unsafe result.
Normalize only what you can define precisely
Normalize role names, text parts, finish reasons, usage units, and error categories only when their meanings are comparable. Preserve raw provider data in a diagnostics field if operators need it, but keep that field out of core workflows. Usage counters may not be directly comparable across providers; document the unit and availability for each adapter.
Make extensions deliberate
Some applications need a provider-specific feature. Represent it as an explicitly named extension, for example provider_options keyed by provider, or expose a separate advanced operation. Keep that path isolated so ordinary workflows remain portable and reviewers can see where lock-in is being accepted.

Move provider selection and secrets into configuration
At runtime, the application should select a logical model role—such as support_summary or extraction—and resolve that role to a provider and model through configuration. Keep the mapping out of unrelated workflows.

The URL above is illustrative configuration syntax, not a service recommendation. Store real secrets in your secret manager or deployment environment, never in source control, logs, client-side bundles, or prompt content. Rotate credentials independently for each provider and give adapters only the permissions they need.
Use explicit model selection when predictability matters. The OpenAI documentation advises production systems to choose a model explicitly rather than relying on whichever runtime default an SDK release happens to provide: Models and providers. Record the resolved provider and model with every request so a configuration change is auditable.
Choose direct adapters, a gateway, or both
There is no universal winner. Compare the approaches against the capability inventory, team size, and operational ownership.
| Approach | Best fit | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct provider SDKs behind an in-house adapter | A few providers, strict control, or unusual features | Full access to each provider’s capabilities; no extra network hop; your team owns the contract and failure policy. | You maintain translations, authentication, retries, streaming behavior, and upgrades for every adapter. |
| Multi-provider gateway | Many connections, centralized routing, or shared fallback policy | One application endpoint can centralize credentials, routing, retries, and fallback. LiteLLM documents a unified completion interface, gateway operation, and integrations across more than 100 model/provider connections: LiteLLM Getting Started. | The gateway’s supported feature surface may lag provider APIs; it adds deployment, security, and debugging responsibility. Its common request shape does not prove identical model behavior. |
| Hybrid | Portable routine calls plus a small number of specialized features | Use the gateway or common adapter for stable operations and a direct adapter for capabilities the gateway cannot represent. | Two operational paths require clear ownership, tests, and observability. |
Gateway documentation describes routing and provider management, including retry and fallback patterns; see LiteLLM Providers. Treat those as implementation features, not evidence that every model supports every option.
Implement the switchable architecture step by step
- Inventory calls and required behavior. List every model operation, its input and output shape, tools, streaming, modalities, limits, controls, and operational thresholds. Separate must-have behavior from convenient provider features.
- Define the internal contract. Create request, result, capability, and typed-error types for the application’s actual needs. Decide how cancellation, timeouts, partial streams, malformed output, and safety refusals appear to callers.
- Create a provider-neutral service. Business code calls an interface such as
generate(request, model_role). It never imports a provider SDK or assembles an endpoint URL. - Externalize configuration. Map each logical role to a provider, model ID, endpoint, deployment, and secret reference. Support separate values for development, staging, and production without recompiling the application.
- Build one adapter per target. Translate messages and controls, invoke the provider, normalize the response, classify errors, and attach provider/model identity. Add capability checks before sending requests that cannot succeed.
- Decide whether to add a gateway. If centralized routing, retries, or many provider connections justify it, place the gateway behind the same internal contract. Review its supported features and failure semantics before making it a production dependency.
- Add contract and regression tests. Run representative prompts and boundary cases against every adapter or route. Validate output quality criteria, schema validity, tool execution, streaming sequence, failure handling, latency, and cost thresholds.
- Instrument and roll out gradually. Start with shadow, canary, or low-risk traffic when the application warrants it. Compare providers by workflow and model, not by a single aggregate score.
Test portability with the application’s real workloads
A green “same request shape” test proves only that a request was accepted. A switch is acceptable when the product still meets its own requirements.

Build a representative evaluation set
- Normal examples from each major workflow, with sensitive data removed or safely synthesized.
- Long-context and near-limit inputs.
- Malformed, empty, adversarial, and ambiguous inputs.
- Cases that require exact schema validation or enum compliance.
- Tool calls with multiple tools, invalid arguments, retries, and cancellation if those paths exist.
- Streaming interruptions, reconnects, and partial output handling when streaming is used.
Define pass criteria before changing traffic
Set thresholds appropriate to the product: required schema-valid rate, task correctness judged by a rubric or human review, maximum acceptable latency, error-rate ceiling, and cost budget. These are application decisions, not a universal benchmark. Keep prompts, parameters, model IDs, and test results versioned so a later model update can be distinguished from an adapter defect.
Test negative paths
Force authentication failures, rate limits, timeouts, malformed responses, unavailable models, and gateway outages. Verify that retries are bounded and idempotent, fallback does not duplicate side effects, and the user receives a useful status. Never retry a tool call that may already have caused an external action unless your workflow has an idempotency key and a safe reconciliation step.
Understand what “OpenAI-compatible” does and does not mean
An endpoint that accepts a familiar request format can reduce integration work, but format compatibility is not backend identity or behavioral equivalence. The OpenTelemetry semantic conventions note that multiple services can be accessed through an OpenAI REST API or client library while proxying or hosting models from different providers: Gen AI semantic conventions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompatibility can still leave differences in:
- Supported model names, deployment IDs, context windows, and tokenization.
- Whether structured outputs are strict, advisory, or unsupported.
- Tool-call syntax, parallel calls, argument validation, and finish events.
- Streaming event order and whether usage arrives at the end.
- Safety refusals, content filters, latency distributions, and transient errors.
- Parameter interpretation, default values, and maximum limits.
Keep the provider and model explicit in configuration and telemetry. If a provider-specific API path is required for a feature, expose that requirement in the adapter’s capability declaration rather than implying the common endpoint supports it.
Instrument provider and model identity
Record enough context to answer “which backend served this result?” for every request. Useful fields include logical workflow, configured provider, resolved model, server address, request ID, latency, retry count, outcome, token or usage data when supplied, and error category.
OpenTelemetry defines GenAI attributes for provider and model context. Use gen_ai.provider.name and model attributes consistently, and retain the server address when it helps distinguish a gateway from a direct provider. Do not infer backend identity from an API format alone.

Prompt, message, and tool-call content can contain personal or confidential data. The OpenTelemetry conventions flag these content attributes as potentially sensitive. Apply redaction, sampling, access controls, retention limits, and opt-out rules before recording them; often metadata and hashes are sufficient for correlation.
Roll out a provider change safely
Stage configuration first
Deploy the adapter and tests with the current provider selected. Verify that configuration validation catches missing keys, unknown model roles, incompatible capability flags, and accidental production defaults. Then enable the new provider in a non-production environment with the same prompts and limits used in production.
Use controlled traffic
For a high-risk workflow, begin with shadow requests that do not affect users, then a small canary. Compare schema failures, task-quality scores, latency, retries, refusal rates, and cost by workflow and model. Keep an immediate configuration rollback rather than requiring a code deployment.
Define stop conditions
Pause or roll back when a required capability fails, output validation drops below its threshold, latency or cost exceeds its budget, or telemetry cannot identify the serving backend. A fallback route should have its own tests; otherwise it can turn a provider outage into an untested behavior change.
Common failure modes and fixes
Provider classes leak into application code
Symptom: replacing a provider requires edits across controllers, prompts, and persistence code. Fix: move SDK imports and translation into adapters; expose only your internal request, result, and error types.

Unsupported options disappear silently
Symptom: a target accepts the request but quality or safety changes because a control was ignored. Fix: declare capabilities, reject required-but-unsupported features, and test optional-feature fallbacks.
Fallback repeats side effects
Symptom: a timeout triggers a second tool call or duplicate external action. Fix: separate generation from side-effect execution, use idempotency keys, and retry only operations whose semantics are safe.
Telemetry shows only the gateway
Symptom: operators cannot tell which underlying model produced an answer. Fix: propagate configured and resolved provider/model identity through the gateway and record it at the application boundary.
Recommended Free Tools
Tests cover only happy-path text
Symptom: migration passes unit tests but fails on streaming, schemas, tools, or long prompts. Fix: derive regression cases directly from the inventory and include malformed inputs and provider outages.
A practical decision checklist
- Can a business workflow call the model without importing a provider SDK?
- Are provider, model, endpoint, deployment, and credentials configurable per environment?
- Does each adapter declare support for the required modalities, tools, schemas, streaming, and controls?
- Do tests replay realistic tasks and validate correctness, schema, tool behavior, failures, latency, and cost?
- Can operators identify the actual provider and model for every response?
- Are sensitive prompts and tool arguments excluded or redacted in telemetry?
- Can you roll back by changing configuration, and are fallback paths tested for duplicate side effects?
If any answer is no, the application may have a common call shape without genuine switching ability. Address that gap before routing production traffic to another provider.
When a direct adapter is better than a gateway
Use a small in-house adapter when only a few providers are needed, the application relies on specialized features, or the team requires tight control over transport, retries, and data handling. A gateway is more attractive when many teams need centralized credentials, routing, fallback, and a shared operational surface. Either way, keep the application-facing contract small and run the same capability and regression tests.
The goal is not to pretend providers are identical. The goal is to make differences local, explicit, testable, and observable so replacing one implementation is a controlled engineering change rather than a rewrite.
