To make AirPods louder, start audio on your iPhone and press the iPhone’s volume-up button, or open Control Center and raise the volume slider. If the sound still seems limited, check whether Headphone Safety’s Reduce Loud Audio is enabled. Direct volume gestures on AirPods depend on the model.
Raise the iPhone’s media volume

Start playing audio through your AirPods.

Press the iPhone’s volume-up button, or open Control Center and move the volume slider up. Apple’s iPhone volume guide explains that the side buttons control media playback when Change with Buttons is off.

If you adjusted the volume before playback began, check the level again while audio is playing. The on-screen media control is the relevant level to inspect.

To find the button setting, go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Changing it affects whether the side buttons adjust media volume or the ringer and alerts.

Use the AirPods’ volume control if your model supports it
AirPods controls vary by model. Apple documents a swipe up or down on the stem to change volume for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3. This gesture is not listed as a control for every AirPods generation. See Apple’s guide to playing audio on AirPods for the controls available to your model.
You can also adjust playback from the connected iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, or Apple Watch, where supported. If a gesture you expect is unavailable, check the guide for the exact AirPods model rather than assuming all stems work alike.

Check whether Headphone Safety is limiting output
On iPhone, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety. If Reduce Loud Audio is on, review its level. iPhone analyzes headphone audio and reduces sound above the selected level. Apple describes this control in its headphone audio-level guidance.
Headphone notifications can also cause iPhone to set a lower headphone volume the next time headphones connect. You can raise the volume again, subject to your device settings and regional rules. The feature is intended to manage exposure, so turning off or raising a limit may increase hearing risk.

Make soft sounds clearer with Headphone Accommodations
Headphone Accommodations is an accessibility feature for supported Apple and Beats headphones. It can make soft sounds easier to hear and adjust selected frequencies; it is not a universal volume booster for every recording or app.

Turn on Headphone Accommodations, then select Customize Audio or choose an Audio Tuning option and level to suit your needs.

For AirPods Pro in Transparency mode
AirPods Pro users can adjust amplification, balance, and tone for Transparency mode. Conversation Boost is designed to focus on the person speaking in front of you; it helps with face-to-face conversation rather than raising music volume generally. Apple explains these controls in its Transparency mode guide.

Keep listening levels in perspective
Apple warns: “Listening to audio on your headphones at too high a volume for too long can damage your hearing.” Its headphone-notifications page gives over 80 dB for a total of 40 hours in the last seven days as an example exposure that can trigger a notification—not a universal safe-listening boundary. Measurements are most accurate with Apple or Beats headphones; measurements for other headphones may be estimated from iPhone volume. See Apple’s headphone notification information.
Menu names and available controls can vary with AirPods model, iPhone, software version, and region. A setting may not change every app, recording, or device restriction, so adjust playback first and then check the specific control relevant to your setup.
