To make an AI image look photorealistic, describe a specific scene like a visual brief: name the subject and action, set the environment and framing, direct the light, and call out the materials and details that must remain accurate. Then assess the output against that brief and fix one problem at a time. Camera terms and “ultra-realistic” adjectives can steer appearance, but they cannot guarantee a convincing result.
What to put in a photorealistic AI image prompt
Start with what the image needs to communicate and where it will be used. A product photograph, an editorial portrait and a documentary-style scene call for different subjects, compositions and levels of context. From there, describe what should be visible rather than stacking broad style words.
Build the scene from visible details
- Subject and action: identify who or what is pictured and what is happening.
- Setting: describe the location, background and relevant surroundings.
- Framing: specify shot size, viewpoint and where the subject sits in the frame.
- Light: give its direction, softness or hardness, and time-of-day quality if it matters.
- Materials and appearance: call out colors, surface texture, depth and atmosphere.
- Output: state the aspect ratio or format when the tool supports it and the use requires it.
Photographic language can help communicate a desired look. OpenAI’s image-generation guide cautions that camera specifications should be treated as cues for appearance, not guarantees of exact physical simulation. A lens or camera description is not a substitute for saying what the image should actually show.

State which details must be preserved—such as a person’s identity, a product’s geometry, a label, required wording or reference-image details—and which elements may change. For an image edit, name both the intended change and what must stay the same. This gives the generator a clearer boundary than a vague request to “improve” an image.

A reusable starting pattern is:
Create a photorealistic [intended image/use] of [subject] [action] in [setting]. Frame it as [shot size, viewpoint and subject placement]. Show [important materials, colors and details]. Light it with [direction, quality and time of day]. Use [depth, atmosphere and palette]. Preserve [required identity/product/reference details]. Avoid [specific unwanted artifact or change]. Output [aspect ratio or format if supported].
Treat this as a brief to adapt, not a formula that guarantees realism. Specific visible instructions are generally more useful than relying on adjectives such as “beautiful,” “cinematic” or “ultra-realistic” alone.

How to refine an image that looks fake
Inspect the result against the brief before rewriting the whole prompt. Identify the most important mismatch, describe it plainly, and make one focused follow-up request. Changing several independent properties at once makes it harder to tell which instruction helped—or caused a new problem.
- Check the main read: is the subject, action and setting what you asked for?
- Find the specific defect: note an incorrect shape, material, lighting direction, framing choice or other visible mismatch.
- Choose one correction: state the change you want, along with any detail that must remain fixed.
- Review the new result: compare it with the original requirements, not just whether it looks more polished.
- Repeat only where needed: address the next mismatch without needlessly changing parts that already work.
For edits based on a reference, check that the requested change stayed within scope. If the image includes text, verify its wording and legibility. Check product geometry and labels against the reference, and confirm that a requested transparent background is actually transparent.

How to choose an image-generation model or workflow
There is no established universal winner for photorealistic image generation. Compare current options using representative prompts and the controls your work actually needs. Feature names, model availability and service terms can change, so verify the live documentation before building a workflow around a particular capability.

Check older tutorials before using their API instructions
Google’s Gemini API documentation says its Imagen models have shut down and directs developers to Nano Banana model names and generate_content. The page was last updated September 17, 2026. Older Imagen API examples may no longer match the available workflow; check Google’s Imagen API page and current migration guidance before adapting one.

Authenticity, consent and image provenance
A photorealistic generated image can be mistaken for a camera photograph, and an AI edit can materially change a real person’s appearance. Consider consent, context and the risk of misleading viewers, particularly with identifiable people or documentary-looking scenes. The OpenAI system-card addendum discusses risks associated with photorealism, image-to-image transformation and detailed instruction following, including harmful alterations of images of people.
When origin matters, distinguish among images generated entirely by a model, images captured by a device and images modified with AI. C2PA’s 2026 implementation guide describes machine-readable source classification, an AI-disclosure assertion, localization of modified regions, and recording details such as prompts, reference images, seed values and parameters. Google says images generated by its documented Gemini 3 API models include a SynthID watermark. These mechanisms can communicate origin or modification, but they do not independently verify every visual claim. Disclosure requirements depend on jurisdiction, platform, use and audience; no single rule applies universally.
