AI can make a financial term easier to read or help someone find the right official form, but fluent text is not proof that advice is accurate, suitable or legally regulated. The safest approach is to use AI as an explanation and navigation aid, then verify any consequential detail and involve a qualified human adviser before acting.
What AI can—and cannot—do for an older adult
“Financial advice” covers very different activities. An AI system can explain a term, summarize a letter, draft questions for a pension appointment or point to a government service. That is different from recommending that a particular person buy an investment, move a pension, change a withdrawal rate or take out a loan. The second category depends on personal circumstances and may be regulated differently from general information.
The OECD’s Artificial intelligence and personal finance (21 July 2026) describes opportunities in accessibility, personalization and decision-making, but also risks from bias, hallucinations, commercial influence, data privacy and exclusion. It concludes that the long-term effect on financial well-being remains uncertain. A useful mental model is:
- Explanation: “What does ‘annuity’ mean in this letter?”
- Navigation: “Where is the official form to report a suspected scam in my country?”
- Personal recommendation: “Which annuity should I buy with my savings?”
The first two can be reasonable starting points when the source and limits are clear. The third should be treated as a prompt for a regulated or otherwise qualified adviser, not as an instruction to act.

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), in Money talks: Lessons from 2 LLM pilots on consumer guidance (first published 30 May 2025, updated 3 December 2025), wrote that “LLMs demonstrate strong potential in simplifying complex information, enhancing readability and accessibility.” Its pilots also stressed robust evaluation: comprehension depends on context and delivery, not merely on lowering the reading level.
Start with a safer question and a clear boundary
Ask for an explanation, not a decision
A precise prompt reduces the chance that a general chatbot will present a personal recommendation as if it were established fact. For example:
I am in [country]. Explain the word “drawdown” in plain language, in five short steps. Do not recommend a product or tell me what to do. List the facts I should confirm with my pension provider or a qualified adviser.
For a letter, remove account numbers, full addresses and other identifiers, then ask:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Summarize this letter in plain language. Separate facts stated in the letter from anything you are inferring. Flag dates, fees, penalties and deadlines I should verify with the sender.
Requesting a separation between quoted facts and inference makes a confident-sounding guess easier to spot. It does not guarantee accuracy.
Use a verification question every time the stakes are high
After an AI response, ask: “What information is this based on, what could be wrong or missing, and what should I check with a qualified adviser or the official provider?” A useful answer should identify its source or admit that it has none. If it cannot explain the basis for a tax rate, benefit rule, fee, deadline or eligibility statement, stop and verify it independently.

Recognize a recommendation disguised as an explanation
Statements such as “you should transfer now,” “this fund is best for you,” or “you can safely withdraw this amount” are recommendations, even when they appear in a friendly explanation. Do not act on them until a professional who can assess your circumstances has reviewed the decision.
Choose the right help for the task
No single channel is best for every question. Compare the available option against the following practical dimensions: regulation and recourse in your jurisdiction, clarity about sources and uncertainty, control over pace and format, data collection, access to a person, and evidence that comprehension and suitability have been evaluated.

| Option | Best use | Regulation and recourse | Sources and uncertainty | Control and human access | Privacy considerations | What is known about comprehension or suitability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| General-purpose AI chatbot | Definitions, summaries, question lists and navigation | Depends on the service and country; do not assume it is regulated financial advice or that a financial-complaints route exists. | May not show a source or may blend facts with generated text; require source checking. | Usually allows follow-up and pace control, but a person may not be available. | Minimize personal and account data; review retention and sharing settings. | No product-specific older-adult suitability result is established here. |
| Financial provider’s digital guidance | Understanding that provider’s own forms, fees, processes and terminology | Rules and complaint rights depend on the provider, service type and jurisdiction. | Often closer to the provider’s current information, but ask for the publication date and scope. | Check whether you can slow down, revisit an answer and reach staff. | Confirm why information is collected and whether it is used for automated decisions. | Ask what user testing and suitability checks were performed; no universal result applies. |
| Qualified human adviser | Major decisions involving investments, pensions, tax, debt, benefits or capacity concerns | Verify the adviser’s authorization and the complaint or compensation route in your jurisdiction. | Can explain assumptions, documents and uncertainty directly; still ask for written reasons. | You can request plain language, large-print or alternative formats and a follow-up appointment. | Ask how records are protected and who can access them. | Suitability duties and accessibility arrangements depend on local rules and the adviser. |
These categories are not interchangeable. A provider’s chatbot may know its own process but still be unsuitable for an independent retirement decision. A human adviser can make mistakes, so ask for the basis of the recommendation and check that it reflects your goals, time horizon, income needs and risk tolerance.
A step-by-step workflow for safer AI use
- Define the task. Write whether you need an explanation, a summary, a list of questions or help finding an official service. If you are asking what action to take, label it as a high-stakes decision requiring human review.
- Set the context without identifying yourself. State your country, the relevant broad topic and the output format you need. Use ranges rather than exact balances and omit names, account numbers, passwords, National Insurance or Social Security numbers, dates of birth and full addresses.
- Specify the format. Ask for short sentences, one idea per paragraph, a glossary, numbered steps, a large-print-friendly structure or an audio-ready script. Ask the tool to define jargon on first use.
- Require uncertainty labels. Tell it to mark information that may vary by country, date, provider or plan, and to distinguish a source quotation from an inference.
- Check the date and jurisdiction. Open the official regulator, government or provider page yourself. Confirm the rule, fee, deadline and eligibility condition in the correct country and edition.
- Ask a second question. Request the assumptions, missing facts and possible alternatives. If the answers change when you alter one detail, that is a signal to seek advice rather than to choose the most reassuring version.
- Use a human checkpoint. For a pension transfer, investment purchase or sale, debt restructuring, tax election, benefits claim with a deadline, power-of-attorney issue or suspected exploitation, take the verified information and your questions to an appropriately qualified professional.
- Keep a record. Save the original letter, the date of the AI conversation, the sources checked and the final human explanation. Do not rely on a chatbot transcript as evidence that a recommendation was authorized or suitable.
Design the interaction around comprehension and control
Offer more than “simplified text”
Older adults are not a uniform group. Vision, hearing, dexterity, memory, language, confidence and previous experience vary widely, and age alone does not predict digital skill. Large text can help one person while a better structure, spoken output, keyboard navigation or a printable version helps another.
Useful controls include:
- short paragraphs and numbered steps rather than dense blocks;
- plain-language definitions with the technical term retained in parentheses;
- adjustable text size, strong contrast and a layout that works when zoomed;
- read-aloud, captions and a downloadable or printable version;
- the ability to pause, go back, ask “why?” and request an example;
- a visible “talk to a person” route, with opening hours and an alternative contact method;
- a warning before an answer could trigger a payment, transfer or irreversible choice.
Ask the user to explain the result in their own words or to identify the next safe step. This is more informative than assuming that a short answer was understood. The FCA pilots support context-sensitive evaluation, while a 2025 review in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications recommends accessibility features, co-design and usability testing for inclusive fintech. Those are design recommendations, not proof that any particular interface improves financial decision quality for older adults.

Test with real users, not just a readability score
When an organization deploys AI guidance, it should observe older adults completing realistic tasks: finding a fee, identifying a deadline, correcting a mistaken assumption and escalating to a person. Measure whether they can state the key fact, the uncertainty and the next step. Test with screen readers, magnification, touch and keyboard input, different languages and people who are less confident online. A lower reading grade alone cannot show that the interaction is safe or usable.
Protect personal and financial information
Do not paste a complete bank statement, pension record, tax return, identity document or benefits letter containing identifiers into a general tool. Redact names, addresses, reference numbers, barcodes, signatures, account details and any information that could be combined to identify you. Use a fictional example when learning a concept.
Before using a provider’s AI feature, check what data it collects, how long it is retained, whether conversations are used to improve the system, who can review them and how to delete them. A tool that asks for more information than the task requires is a warning sign. Privacy protection does not make an answer correct; it only reduces exposure if the tool mishandles the data.
Be particularly cautious when someone else is helping. A family member, carer or volunteer should not pressure an older person to disclose credentials or authorize a transfer. Let the account holder choose who is present, and use the provider’s formal authorization or power-of-attorney process where applicable.
Verify consequential claims before acting
Claims that need primary-source checking
- tax rates, contribution limits and filing deadlines;
- pension, benefit or healthcare eligibility;
- early-withdrawal penalties, surrender charges and fees;
- investment returns, guarantees, risk ratings and “safe” withdrawal amounts;
- identity, fraud-reporting and complaint procedures;
- statements about a product being regulated, insured or covered by compensation.
Check these against the current government, regulator or provider publication for your jurisdiction. Record the page date and ask a human professional to interpret the rule when your circumstances are unusual.

Watch for hallucinations and commercial influence
An AI system can invent a regulation, cite a nonexistent document or present marketing language as neutral guidance. It may also steer you toward a product because its data or interface reflects commercial incentives. Ask who benefits if you follow the suggestion, whether alternatives were considered and whether the source is independent. Never treat a confident tone, a detailed table or a numerical projection as evidence.
When to stop using AI and obtain human help
Switch to a qualified adviser or the relevant official service when:
- the decision is difficult to reverse or could materially change lifetime income;
- you are considering a pension transfer, annuity, investment purchase, debt settlement or large payment;
- the answer depends on health, care needs, tax residence, immigration status, disability, marital status or a trust;
- you cannot identify a current authoritative source or the tool gives conflicting answers;
- you suspect fraud, coercion, undue influence or financial exploitation;
- memory, communication or decision-making difficulties make it hard to confirm what was agreed.
In the United States, the Federal Reserve Board’s SR 24-8 / CA 24-6: Interagency Statement on Elder Financial Exploitation (revised 2 June 2026) addresses how financial institutions respond to exploitation. It does not create a universal AI-advice rule, but it reinforces the need for prompt human escalation when exploitation is suspected. Preserve messages and transaction details, contact the institution’s fraud or safeguarding team and use the appropriate local reporting channel.

United Kingdom
The UK Government’s Financial Services AI Adoption Plan (July 2026) says regulated advice currently reaches around 9% of UK adults. That figure is for UK adults generally, not for older adults, and it does not measure AI use or outcomes. The government is working on the boundary between general-purpose AI outputs and regulated advice; the legal status of a particular service therefore depends on what it does and how it is offered. Check the firm’s authorization, the service’s complaint route and the protections attached to the specific activity.

New Zealand
The Financial Markets Authority’s Thematic review: Artificial intelligence in financial advice (6 August 2026) is exploratory. It is useful for understanding supervisory questions, but it does not establish that a particular AI tool is approved or that the same protections apply to every digital interaction. Confirm the provider’s status and your recourse under New Zealand rules.
Other jurisdictions
Rules differ elsewhere, including who may give personalized investment advice, what disclosures are required, how automated decisions are challenged and which compensation schemes apply. Identify the country, state or province and the type of service before relying on any statement about rights. A general chatbot cannot determine your legal protections.
A practical example from question to safe next step
Unsafe prompt
“I am 72 and have £180,000. Should I move it into the fund with the highest return?” This discloses a precise balance and asks for a personal recommendation without the information needed to assess income needs, tax, risk, fees, time horizon or alternatives.
Safer first prompt
I live in the UK. Explain the difference between an annuity, drawdown and leaving money invested. Use plain language and a three-column comparison. Do not recommend one. List the questions a regulated adviser would need to ask me.
Verification and escalation
Check each definition against current FCA or provider material, remove any unsupported figures, and take the question list to an authorized adviser. Ask the adviser to explain fees, assumptions, downside scenarios, tax treatment and what would happen if your health, spending or markets changed. Do not transfer money because the AI’s comparison appears balanced.
A checklist for families, carers and service designers
For an older adult using AI
- Am I asking for an explanation or for a personal decision?
- Have I removed identifiers and shared only what is necessary?
- Does the answer name a current, relevant source?
- Have I checked country, date, provider and plan details?
- Can I state the uncertainty and the next safe step in my own words?
- Can I reach a qualified person before paying, transferring or signing?
For a family member or carer
- Ask permission before handling information or joining a call.
- Support the person’s questions; do not substitute your judgment or pressure a decision.
- Use formal authorization processes rather than sharing passwords.
- Escalate suspected exploitation to the institution and local authorities promptly.
For an organization offering AI guidance
- State whether the tool provides information, guidance or regulated advice.
- Show sources, dates, assumptions, uncertainty and commercial relationships.
- Provide accessible formats, user-controlled pacing and a staffed escalation route.
- Test comprehension, error recovery and suitability with diverse older adults.
- Minimize data collection, explain retention and audit outputs for bias and hallucinations.
- Warn before irreversible actions and require confirmation through a secure human or verified channel.
The bottom line
Make AI financial information easier to use by giving the user control over language, pace, format and follow-up—not by removing the safeguards that make financial decisions accountable. Use AI to translate jargon, organize questions and locate authoritative information. Verify every consequential claim, protect personal data, keep the jurisdiction visible and move to a qualified human adviser before making a major financial decision.
