To loop a YouTube Music playlist, start playback from the playlist and select Repeat until the control is set to repeat the entire playlist. The repeat icon must not show a 1: an icon with 1 repeats only the current song or video. This distinction is documented for Android and desktop YouTube Music. Shuffle is optional and changes the order without changing whether the playlist loops.
What continuous playback means in YouTube Music
There are three separate playback behaviors that are easy to confuse:
- Whole-playlist Repeat sends playback back to the beginning when the last item in the playlist finishes.
- Repeat 1, shown by a repeat icon with the number 1, plays only the current song or video over and over.
- Autoplay concerns what happens after the current queue ends. It is not the control that loops the playlist itself.
Shuffle is independent of all three. It changes the order in which items are selected, while Repeat determines whether the playlist starts again after its final item.

Fastest way to loop a playlist
- Open the playlist in YouTube Music and start playback from it.
- Open the player controls so the Repeat button is visible.
- Tap or click Repeat until the whole-playlist repeat state is selected.
- Check the icon. If it displays 1, tap or click it again to leave single-track repeat. The whole-playlist state is the repeat icon without the 1 indicator.
- Let the queue run to its final item. With whole-playlist Repeat active, playback should return to the playlist rather than stopping at the end.
The exact location, color, and label of the control can vary by device or app version. The important check is the icon state, not its position on the screen.

Android phone or tablet instructions
Start playback from the playlist
Open YouTube Music on the Android phone or tablet, open the playlist, and begin playing it. Starting from the playlist gives the player a queue based on that playlist instead of a single track opened from another location.
Select whole-playlist Repeat
- While a playlist track is playing, display the playback controls.
- Tap the Repeat control.
- Continue tapping until the control indicates repeat for the playlist or album.
- Inspect the icon before leaving the player. YouTube Music Help says the whole-playlist state is shown when the repeat control turns white; a 1 appearing in the middle means that only the current song or video will repeat.
If the icon shows 1, the setting is not wrong or broken; it is simply the other repeat mode. Tap the control again to cycle to the playlist mode.
Optional: turn on Shuffle
Shuffle is useful when you want the playlist to continue indefinitely but do not want the same sequence each time. On Android, YouTube Music Help describes two ways to start it:

- While listening to a track from the playlist, tap Shuffle in the player.
Shuffle changes the order; it does not replace Repeat. You can therefore use shuffled playback with whole-playlist Repeat, or leave Shuffle off for the playlist’s normal order.

Confirm what is actually queued
If the playlist appears to stop early, open the Up Next view and inspect the items waiting to play. An older TeamYouTube community discussion about incomplete queues recommends checking that the playlist is fully represented in Up Next. That advice is a troubleshooting check, not a guarantee that every current queue problem will be fixed by rebuilding the queue.
Desktop instructions
Set the repeat state
- Open YouTube Music in a desktop browser and open the playlist.
- Start a track from that playlist.
- Bring up the player controls and select Repeat.
- Cycle through the available repeat states until the icon shows the playlist repeat state without a 1.
- Leave the player running and verify the behavior when the final queued item is reached.
The official desktop help result available for this guidance is in Spanish, but it describes the same distinction as the Android help: a repeat icon with 1 repeats the current item, while the state without 1 repeats the playlist or album. Button placement and wording can differ between browser layouts and versions, so use the icon state as the reliable test.
Desktop shuffle
Use the desktop player’s Shuffle control when you want a different order. Do not use Shuffle as a substitute for Repeat: a shuffled queue can still end unless the playlist repeat state is also active.

Why a playlist may appear to stop
The icon shows 1
This is the most common mode mistake. Repeat 1 is working as designed, but it keeps returning to the current item rather than moving through the playlist. Cycle the Repeat control until the 1 disappears and the whole-playlist state is selected.

Playback reaches the end and does not start again
Check that you started the player from the playlist and that whole-playlist Repeat is still selected. Then inspect Up Next. If the queue contains only one track or a shortened selection, the player may not have the complete playlist available to repeat.
The queue contains music outside the playlist
Autoplay can continue with additional music after the current queue. A TeamYouTube community reply dated August 5, 2020 recommends turning Autoplay off when the desired result is to stop after a fixed-length playlist. Because that advice is dated community guidance rather than current official help, treat it as a troubleshooting clue and look for the Autoplay setting in the layout you are using.
Some playlist items are missing from Up Next
Open Up Next before changing several controls. Compare the queue with the playlist and make sure the playlist is fully represented. The older support discussion reports incomplete queues and suggests this check, but it does not establish one universal cause or a guaranteed repair for every current version.
The order is unexpected
Look for an active Shuffle setting. Shuffle is an ordering choice, not a repeat choice. Turn it off if you need the playlist’s normal order, or leave it on if randomized playback is intentional.

The controls are in a different place
YouTube Music does not necessarily present identical button placement or labels on every device, browser, or app version. The current official Android help page and the separate desktop help result document the same repeat-state distinction, but they do not establish that every interface looks identical. Search the expanded player controls for Repeat rather than relying on a fixed screen position.
How the queue affects continuous playback
Repeat operates on what the player has queued. A playlist can be visible in the library while the current queue contains only a track or a partial selection. That is why checking Up Next is useful when the observed behavior does not match the selected Repeat state.
- Open the playlist itself rather than a standalone track result.
- Start playback from the playlist.
- Open Up Next and check that the expected playlist items are present.
- Return to the player and select whole-playlist Repeat, confirming that the icon has no 1.
- If the queue still omits items, rebuild it by closing the current playback and starting the playlist again, then inspect Up Next before waiting for the queue to finish.
The final step is a practical recovery attempt based on the queue-check guidance; the support discussion does not promise that it resolves every incomplete-queue report.
Choosing the right setup for common listening goals
Play the same playlist in its saved order
Start the playlist, leave Shuffle off, and select whole-playlist Repeat. The saved order is preserved for each pass through the queue.

Keep the playlist going but vary the order
Start the playlist, select Shuffle, and also select whole-playlist Repeat. Shuffle determines the order; Repeat determines what happens after the queued items have been played.
Play the playlist once and then stop
Do not select whole-playlist Repeat. If additional music starts after the queue, investigate Autoplay. The dated TeamYouTube guidance specifically associates turning Autoplay off with stopping after a fixed-length playlist, but the available source does not confirm that every current interface uses the same switch location.
Repeat one meditation, lesson, or music video
Select Repeat 1 intentionally. The visible 1 is the confirmation that the current song or video, rather than the whole playlist, is being repeated.

What to remember
The control that makes a YouTube Music playlist play continuously is whole-playlist Repeat. The decisive visual check is simple: a 1 means the current item repeats; no 1 means the playlist or album repeat state. Shuffle only changes order, while Autoplay governs additional music after a queue and should be investigated separately when playback continues beyond the playlist.
