To make a Windrose server private, open its hosting control panel, go to Config, open Windrose Server Settings, enable Is Password Protected, enter a value in Password, save, and restart the server. Players must then enter that password to join through the protected server entry flow.
What Windrose password protection does
Windrose privacy is controlled by a server-side configuration setting. It is not described as an in-game administrator command, and this procedure does not require changing a router or adding a separate invite code. Shockbyte describes the purpose plainly: making a server private lets you control who can join by restricting access with a password.
When password protection is enabled, the server expects the password configured in Windrose Server Settings before allowing a player through the protected entry flow. Anyone who has the password may be able to join, so treat it as an access credential rather than as a permanent list of approved accounts.

Managed hosts such as Shockbyte and Nitrado expose the relevant options in their hosting panels. If you run the free Windrose Dedicated Server app from Steam on your own machine, the same setting may be presented through your installation’s configuration files or management interface; use the official dedicated-server documentation for that installation when the panel labels differ.

What you need before changing the setting
- Access to the server’s hosting Control Panel, or administrative access to the self-hosted dedicated-server installation.
- The configuration file named Windrose Server Settings.
- A password you can communicate to the intended players.
- A short maintenance window, because the server must be restarted after saving the change.
Write down the exact capitalization, spaces and punctuation of the password you enter. Players will need to reproduce the value exactly. If you are changing an existing public server, tell connected players that a restart is required so they do not mistake the temporary outage for a failed configuration.
Step-by-step: enable private access in the control panel
- Open the server Control Panel.
Sign in to the panel used to manage the Windrose server. Select the specific server you want to protect if the account contains more than one. - Open the Config tab.
The privacy control is in the configuration area, not in the game’s chat or administration command interface. - Select Windrose Server Settings.
Open the file with this exact name. Do not edit an unrelated general, world or startup file when the panel lists several configuration files. - Enable
Is Password Protected.
Turn on the setting. This toggle is what changes the server from open access to password-protected access. - Enter a value in
Password.
Use the password you want players to type when joining. Keep a private copy for yourself and distribute it only to the people you want to admit. - Save the configuration.
Use the panel’s save control and wait for confirmation that the file was written. Leaving the page without saving will not apply the new value. - Restart the server.
Restarting loads the updated configuration. The password-protection change should be considered pending until the restart has completed.
After the restart, give a player the password and have them connect through the normal Windrose server entry flow. A successful connection confirms that the protected setting and password were both loaded.
How to confirm that the server is private
Check the configuration after saving
Return to Config and open Windrose Server Settings. Confirm that Is Password Protected remains enabled and that the Password field still contains the value you entered. If either value reverted, the save did not persist or you edited a different configuration file.

Test the join flow
Ask an intended player to connect after the restart. Provide the password exactly as saved, including capitalization and any punctuation. The test should be performed after the server is fully back online; trying during the restart can produce a connection failure that is unrelated to the password.
Do not add unnecessary network changes
The documented privacy procedure does not call for a new invite code or a firewall change. Do not treat those as required steps for enabling the setting. Investigate general connectivity separately only if the server remains unreachable after you have verified the configuration and completed the restart.
Troubleshooting Windrose private servers
The server still appears open
- Open the correct server in the hosting account.
- Go to Config and select Windrose Server Settings.
- Verify that
Is Password Protectedis enabled, rather than merely having text in thePasswordfield. - Save again and wait for the panel to confirm the write.
- Restart the server and wait for it to finish starting before testing.
The toggle, the saved password and the restart are all necessary. A password entered while the toggle is off does not make the server private, and a saved toggle may not take effect until the process reloads its configuration.

Friends cannot join after the change
First, have them use the password exactly as entered. Check capitalization, leading or trailing spaces and punctuation rather than sending a version copied from memory. If the password was changed recently, make sure the server has completed the restart that followed the save, then have the player retry through the protected server entry flow.

If the setting is visibly enabled and the password is correct but the connection still fails, repeat the save-and-restart sequence and test again. The cited setup guidance does not identify a separate invite-code step for this feature, so adding one will not correct a mismatch in the server configuration.
The password field or setting is missing
Make sure you opened the file named Windrose Server Settings, not a similarly named file. Managed panels can expose several configuration areas, and the privacy controls are documented in this specific file. If you are self-hosting and the panel does not use these labels, consult the official Windrose dedicated-server documentation supplied for your installation instead of changing unrelated files by guesswork.

The server restarted but the old behavior remains
Check that you restarted the same server instance whose configuration you edited. Accounts with multiple servers can make it easy to save one instance and restart another. Reopen the file after the restart to confirm that the toggle and password are still present, then perform a fresh join test with the exact saved password.
Changing or rotating the password
To replace an existing password, use the same configuration path: open Config, select Windrose Server Settings, replace the value in Password, save, and restart. The new value is not ready for players until the restart has applied it.
Tell players which password is current rather than distributing multiple versions. Anyone who retained the previous value may continue trying it, so a failed connection immediately after a rotation can simply be a stale-password problem. Have players retry with the new value after the restart has completed.

For a temporary private session, you can later disable Is Password Protected in the same file, save and restart again. That returns the server to the unprotected behavior described by the hosting panel; do not assume that deleting the text from Password alone disables protection.
Managed hosting and self-hosting: what changes
The privacy setting itself is the same concept, but the work around it differs depending on where the server runs. The following distinctions reflect the documented panel workflow and the practical responsibilities of each hosting model; current prices are not established here.

Shockbyte and Nitrado both document Windrose hosting with password-protection controls. Their documentation establishes that managed hosting is available, but it does not establish a universal price, performance level or support policy. Choose the model based on whether you prefer a panel-driven workflow or direct responsibility for the server installation.

- Restart the server and wait until it is running again.
- Give the exact password only to the players you intend to admit.

- If access fails, verify the file, toggle, saved value and restart before investigating unrelated network issues.

For a managed server, the documented path remains the provider’s Control Panel, Config, Windrose Server Settings, the two password controls, save and restart.
