A Windows 11 alarm can sound even when the Clock app is closed or Windows is locked. The reliability problem is usually the device’s power state: Microsoft’s Clock guidance warns that notifications in the sleep scenario appear only while the device is awake. To make an alarm dependable, verify the alarm and repeat days, prevent the PC from sleeping through the scheduled time, keep a portable device powered, and check volume, time-zone, and notification settings.
If the wake-up is important enough that a missed alarm would cause harm or a serious deadline problem, use an independent alarm as a conditional backup. It cannot repair Windows Clock or stop a computer from sleeping, but it still works if the PC is asleep, shut down, out of power, or otherwise unavailable.
What Windows 11 alarms can and cannot do
Microsoft states that “Alarms and timers work even if the app is closed or your device is locked.” You do not need to leave the Clock window open, and locking the screen with Windows key + L is not itself a reason for an alarm to fail. The official instructions are in Microsoft’s Clock support article.
Sleep is different from closing an app or locking Windows. When the computer enters sleep, Windows reduces activity to save power. The Clock app can warn that notifications in this situation appear only while the device is awake. That warning is why the first reliability check is the PC’s sleep schedule, not a reinstall of Clock.

Set up an alarm that has the right schedule
Start by eliminating a simple configuration error. A correctly configured power and notification setup cannot make an alarm sound at a time or on days that were never enabled.
- Open Start, type Clock, and open the Clock app.
- Select Alarm in the app’s navigation.
- Open the alarm you intend to use, or select the control to add a new alarm.
- Set the exact time, choose the sound, and check the repeat days. A one-time alarm will not repeat on the next day unless its schedule says so.
- Make sure the alarm’s enabled switch is on. If you have several alarms, inspect each one rather than assuming the first visible time is active.
- Close the app if you prefer; leaving the window open is not required by Microsoft’s guidance.
Windows can show a bell badge on the Clock taskbar icon as an indication that an alarm is active. The badge is a quick visual check, not a guarantee that the computer will remain awake. Details about taskbar behavior are in Microsoft’s taskbar customization guidance.
Keep the PC awake during the alarm window
For a laptop or tablet, inspect the sleep timeout that covers the entire period before the alarm. Navigate to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. Review both the plugged-in and battery-powered settings, because Windows can use different timers for each power state.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select System, then Power & battery.
- Expand Screen and sleep.
- Read the sleep options for the power state you will use overnight or during the alarm period.
- If the PC would sleep before the alarm, choose a longer sleep interval or keep the device awake in a way that fits your safety, heat, energy, and workplace requirements.
- Save the setting, then recheck it whenever you switch between battery and mains power.
Screen timeout and sleep timeout are separate. Turning the display off can save energy while the device remains awake; allowing the PC itself to sleep is the setting that creates the reliability concern described by Microsoft. Do not infer that a dark screen means the computer is asleep, or that an awake computer must have its display lit.

Lid closure and connected standby
Closing a laptop lid often triggers a sleep action, depending on the computer’s power-plan settings. Because the cited Clock guidance only establishes behavior for a closed app and a locked device, do not treat a closed lid as equivalent to locking Windows. If the laptop will be closed, verify what lid closure does in your power settings and test the exact arrangement before relying on it.
Use stable power and a volume you can hear
Microsoft advises keeping a laptop or tablet plugged in and setting the device volume high enough to hear the alarm. Connect the charger before the alarm period, and check that the charging indicator shows the device is actually receiving power. A loose connector, depleted battery, or power strip that is switched off can make every software setting irrelevant.
- Plug in the computer before leaving it for the alarm.
- Check the Windows speaker icon and raise the main output volume to a level you can hear from the intended location.
- Confirm that sound is routed to the device or speaker you will actually hear; a connected headset or monitor can become the selected output.
- Do not rely on a volume level tested only while wearing headphones if the alarm must be audible across a room.
Microsoft’s guidance does not promise a particular decibel level or guarantee audibility in a specific room. Choose a level appropriate to your environment and hearing needs, and perform a short test with the same output device and power state you will use later.

Verify date, clock, and time zone
An alarm can appear to be missed when the computer’s local time is wrong. If it fires at an unexpected local time, or if you recently traveled or changed regions, go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time.

- Open Settings, then select Time & language and Date & time.
- Check the displayed date and current time against a trusted clock.
- Review the selected time zone. Decide whether Set time zone automatically should be enabled for your situation, or select the correct zone manually.
- After correcting the clock or zone, return to Clock and confirm the alarm’s displayed time and repeat days.
Time-zone changes can alter when a recurring alarm appears in local time. Record the intended local time before changing the zone, then verify it again afterward instead of assuming the schedule stayed visually identical.
Understand Focus and notification behavior
Notification modes can change what Windows shows, even when the alarm schedule is correct. Microsoft’s Focus guidance describes an Alarms only option in Focus assist. That mode is intended to hide other distractions while allowing alarms. Use it when you want fewer interruptions but still need alarm notifications.
Do not disturb silences most notifications, but Microsoft says banners for alarms and reminders, plus notifications from selected apps, can still be allowed. Its current behavior and controls are described in Notifications and Do not disturb in Windows. Because configurations can be customized, inspect the exceptions rather than assuming every notification mode behaves identically.
- Open Settings > System > Notifications and review the Do not disturb rules and allowed notifications.
- Open Focus settings if you use a focus session, and select the alarms-only behavior when that is the desired mode.
- After the scheduled time, press Windows key + N to open Notification Center and check whether an alarm notification was recorded there.
A notification in Notification Center proves that Windows generated a notification; it does not prove that the chosen speaker was audible. Conversely, an empty notification history does not identify whether sleep, scheduling, time-zone, or another setting prevented the event, so continue through the diagnostic sequence.
Check the taskbar indicator before you leave the PC
If Clock is represented on the taskbar, look for its bell badge. Microsoft describes that badge as an indicator of an active alarm. Treat it as a convenient pre-flight check: if the badge is absent, return to Clock and verify the alarm’s enabled state and repeat pattern.

The badge is not a power-state monitor. A visible bell does not tell you whether the computer will sleep later, switch to battery power, lose its audio output, or change time zone. Use it together with the power and sound checks rather than as a replacement for them.
Use background permissions only as a secondary diagnostic
Some Windows app settings expose background-permission choices such as Always or Power optimized. Microsoft’s explanation of background activity and privacy is available at Windows background apps and your privacy. Microsoft says Power optimized can still allow notifications and periodic updates.
That information makes background permission worth checking when other causes have been ruled out, but it is not a universal Clock-alarm repair. Do not change a background setting and assume it overrides sleep, a disabled alarm, an incorrect time zone, muted audio, or an exhausted battery. If the Clock app exposes a background option on your edition of Windows, note its current value, test one deliberate change at a time, and restore the prior value if it has an unwanted battery or privacy impact.

| What you observed | Most useful checks | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| The alarm never appeared and the laptop was closed or unattended. | Review Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep; check whether lid closure or inactivity put the device to sleep; verify charging. | Sleep or loss of power is a stronger lead than the Clock window being closed. Microsoft’s closed-app statement does not extend to every sleep configuration. |
| The PC was locked, but awake, and no sound was heard. | Check the alarm’s enabled state, repeat days, speaker output, volume, and Notification Center with Windows key + N. | Locking Windows should not by itself disable the alarm, so scheduling or audio routing becomes more likely. |
| A notification is visible, but there was no audible alert. | Raise the main volume, select the intended output device, disconnect a headset or monitor that captured audio, and test the alarm sound. | Windows generated a notification, but the sound path or listening conditions prevented you from hearing it. |
| The alarm fired at the wrong local hour. | Check Settings > Time & language > Date & time, including the selected time zone and automatic-time settings. | The computer’s clock or zone may not match the location in which you expected the alarm. |
| Only alarms are visible during a focus session. | Review Focus assist’s Alarms only mode and confirm that the alarm itself is enabled. | The notification mode may be working as configured; it is designed to suppress other distractions, not to create an alarm that is disabled. |
| Do not disturb is enabled. | Inspect its exceptions and allowed banners in Settings > System > Notifications. | Alarms and reminders can be permitted while most other notifications are silenced, but customized rules determine what is displayed. |
| The taskbar has no Clock bell badge. | Open Clock, select Alarm, and inspect the enabled switch, time, and repeat days. | Windows is not showing the taskbar indication Microsoft associates with an active alarm; correct the schedule before troubleshooting deeper settings. |
A controlled test before relying on an alarm
Do not wait for the next morning to discover a configuration problem. Run a short test under the same conditions you intend to use.
- Plug in the laptop or tablet if that is how it will be powered.
- Set an alarm for a few minutes in the future and choose the sound you plan to use.
- Lock Windows with Windows key + L. If you plan to close the lid, test that separately because it may invoke sleep.
- Keep the device in the intended location and use the intended speaker or audio output.
- At the scheduled time, note whether the sound was audible and whether a notification appeared in Notification Center.
- After the test, check the sleep setting and battery state again. A test performed while plugged in and awake does not validate an overnight battery or lid-closure arrangement.
This procedure tests your actual combination of alarm schedule, power state, lock state, audio output, and notification rules. It does not establish a reliability percentage; Microsoft’s cited support pages do not publish a missed-alarm rate or other statistic.

When to add an independent backup
Use a standalone backup alarm clock when the consequence of a missed wake-up is greater than the inconvenience of maintaining a second device. A battery-powered bedside alarm clock is useful when mains power may be interrupted, while a mains-powered model avoids routine battery replacement but depends on electricity. In either case, compare only practical characteristics relevant to the backup role:
- whether it operates independently of the PC;
- battery life or mains-power behavior;
- display readability from the bed or work area;
- audible-alarm controls and whether the sound can be heard in the intended room;
- ease of setting recurring alarms and changing time after travel.
This is a contingency choice, not a Windows fix. Continue correcting the PC’s sleep, power, time, notification, and sound settings if you want Clock to work reliably; use the independent device so a sleeping, shut-down, muted, or unavailable computer is not your only wake-up method.
