Move the keyboard toward the thumb you use: on iPhone, switch to the left- or right-handed keyboard layout; on Android, turn on Gboard’s one-handed mode and pin it to a side. If reaching controls elsewhere on the screen is the problem, use your phone’s screen-navigation feature instead. These are separate settings: lowering or shrinking the screen does not, by itself, bring the keyboard keys closer together.

The best first step is to identify what is actually difficult: reaching keys, repeatedly tapping them, or reaching other screen controls. Each has a different solution. The instructions below cover the built-in keyboard options, alternatives to tapping, and the separate screen-reach features—without assuming that the same menus or features appear on every phone.

Choose the fix for the problem you have

A wide phone can be awkward for two different reasons. You may struggle to reach keys while typing, or you may struggle to reach controls near the top of the screen. Start by identifying which is happening, because the relevant settings do different jobs.

  • Keys are too far from your thumb: use the iPhone one-handed keyboard layout or Gboard’s one-handed mode to shift the keyboard to one side.
  • Tapping individual keys is tiring: try swipe typing or dictation, if the feature is available for your language and setup.
  • Screen controls are too high to reach: use iPhone Reachability or Android system One-handed mode. These help with screen navigation, not keyboard placement.

Menu names and availability can differ with the phone model, operating-system version, keyboard app, language and configuration. If an option described below is missing, check those details before assuming the phone cannot do it.

It also helps to separate a keyboard’s position from its size and from the way you enter text. A left- or right-aligned layout changes where the keys sit. Gboard’s one-handed mode can also provide size and position adjustments, depending on the device and version. Swipe typing and dictation change how you enter words, but neither automatically moves the keyboard closer to your thumb. Screen-reach features bring other content within reach rather than changing the keyboard layout.

Move the keyboard on an iPhone

Switch to a left- or right-handed layout

  1. Open an app and tap a text field so the onscreen keyboard appears.
  2. Touch and hold the Emoji button or the keyboard-switch key. The control’s appearance can vary with the keyboard configuration.
  3. Choose the left- or right-handed keyboard layout from the menu. Select the side that brings the keys toward the thumb you plan to use.
  4. Type a few words and check whether the new position feels more reachable. The keys are shifted toward one edge rather than centered across the full keyboard area.

Apple’s instructions describe this layout as moving the keys closer to your thumb. To return to the centered layout, tap the left or right edge of the keyboard. If you do not see the expected menu, make sure the keyboard is open and try the visible Emoji or keyboard-switch control; the precise control and menu can vary by software version and keyboard setup.

Try the side that matches the hand you are using, then test it in a short message or another text field. The point is to bring the keys nearer to that thumb, not to change the app or shrink the phone’s whole display. If the result feels less comfortable, switch back to the centered keyboard by tapping an edge. You can use the one-sided layout when it helps and return to the usual layout when you want the full keyboard width.

Use swipe typing or dictation instead of tapping each letter

QuickPath lets you form a word by sliding a finger from letter to letter and lifting it when you finish. It can reduce the need to reach for each key individually, but Apple does not claim it will make every person faster or more accurate. QuickPath is not available for every language, so the option may not appear or work with the language you are using.

QuickPath is a different approach from moving the keyboard to one side. It still uses the onscreen keyboard, but instead of tapping each letter separately you trace across the letters in a word. If reaching keys across the keyboard is the main problem, try the one-handed layout first or combine it with QuickPath if both options are available. If repeated individual taps are the tiring part, swipe typing may be worth trying even when the keyboard’s position is manageable.

Dictation is another way to enter text without tapping each letter. Use it when speaking is practical and appropriate for the message; it is not a suitable substitute in every setting. Apple documents how to use dictation, but does not establish a universal speed or accuracy advantage over typing.

For example, dictation may be a reasonable option when you can speak comfortably and the setting suits voice input. It may not fit a private message or a situation where speaking is impractical. Treat it as another input method to choose when appropriate, not as a guaranteed replacement for the keyboard.

Move the cursor without reaching for a tiny spot

After entering text, touch and hold the Space bar until the keyboard becomes a trackpad, then slide your finger to move the insertion point. This helps place the cursor for an edit without trying to tap precisely between letters. It changes cursor control, not the keyboard’s one-handed layout.

This is useful when the text is already entered and you need to position the insertion point for a correction. It addresses precision while editing, rather than the reach involved in typing new words. If the keyboard is too far across the screen, use its one-handed layout; if the cursor is difficult to place, use the Space-bar trackpad behavior.

Use Gboard’s one-handed mode on Android

Pin the reduced keyboard to one side

  1. Open an app and tap a text field to display Gboard.
  2. Open Gboard’s one-handed mode. The available control and route to the feature may vary by device, Android version and Gboard configuration.
  3. Choose whether the reduced keyboard sits on the left or right, according to the thumb you use.
  4. Adjust its size or position if those controls are available, then try typing in the app where you most often notice the reach problem.

Google’s Gboard listing describes One-handed mode as pinning the keyboard to the left or right on large-screen phones. Google’s Android guidance describes shrinking the keyboard and choosing a side, with options to adjust size and position. Those descriptions establish the purpose of the feature, but do not guarantee identical controls on every Android phone.

After choosing a side, test the layout with the kind of typing that usually feels awkward. If keys still feel too far away, look for size or position adjustments if your version offers them. If the keyboard is comfortable in one app but not another, the important check is whether the same keyboard and configuration are active. Do not assume that an instruction for Gboard will apply to a different keyboard app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s guidance on the feature was published April 17, 2025. It reports testing on a Pixel 8 running Android 15 as of March 2025 and cautions that steps and behavior can vary by device and Android version. Treat the directions as a guide to the setting rather than a promise that every phone will show the same menu.

Try Glide Typing or voice typing

Gboard’s Glide Typing lets you slide across letters to enter text rather than tap each key. Gboard also offers voice typing. These can be useful alternatives when repeated reaches across the keyboard are uncomfortable, but availability depends on factors such as language, device and app configuration. Google’s Android accessibility overview also discusses dictation and Voice Access, and notes that feature names and availability may vary by market and device.

Glide Typing and Gboard’s one-handed mode solve related but distinct problems. Glide Typing changes how you enter a word; one-handed mode changes the keyboard’s placement and, where supported, its size. If the issue is the distance between your thumb and the far-side keys, changing the keyboard layout is the more direct fix. If reaching for separate letters is the strain, try Glide Typing. You can use whichever available option better fits the task.

Voice input can be convenient when speaking is suitable, but it is not always private or practical. Glide Typing still uses the onscreen keyboard, so it may not solve a problem caused by the keyboard’s overall position or size. Choose the method that fits the task rather than assuming one input method is universally better.

Reach screen content without changing the keyboard

iPhone: turn on Reachability

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility > Touch and turn on Reachability.
  2. In portrait orientation on a Face ID iPhone, swipe down on the bottom edge of the screen to lower the top half of the display.
  3. On an iPhone with a Home button, lightly double-tap the Home button to bring the top half within reach.
  4. Tap the upper half of the lowered screen to return to the full-screen view.

Reachability is for reaching screen content and controls. It does not shift the keyboard keys closer to one thumb; use the one-handed keyboard layout for that.

Use Reachability when the target is part of the screen—for example, a control or content near the top that is hard to touch one-handed. Its purpose is not to make typing keys narrower or put them on the side. If both tasks are difficult, use the keyboard layout for typing and Reachability for screen navigation rather than expecting one setting to do both.

Android: use system One-handed mode

Android system One-handed mode brings the top half of the screen within reach for notifications, app content and other navigation. To find it, open Settings and search for One-handed mode; the exact route and controls can vary. Google notes that some steps apply only to Android 12 and later.

This system setting is distinct from Gboard’s one-handed keyboard mode. Use the system feature when the issue is reaching content elsewhere on the display, and Gboard’s layout feature when the issue is reaching keys.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The shared name can be confusing: Android’s system One-handed mode is a screen-navigation aid, while Gboard’s One-handed mode is a keyboard layout. If you search Settings and find the system feature, that does not mean Gboard has been moved to one side. To change the typing layout, look for the feature in Gboard itself. The two can be useful for different parts of the same one-handed task.

Adjust the setup if it still feels awkward

If the keyboard option is missing

  • Confirm that an onscreen keyboard is open in a text field before looking for its controls.
  • On iPhone, look for the visible Emoji or keyboard-switch key and touch and hold it; the menu wording and control can vary.
  • On Android, confirm that the active keyboard is Gboard before following Gboard-specific instructions. A different keyboard app may not offer the same feature.
  • Check the phone’s model and software version, as well as the keyboard’s language and configuration. Feature availability and menus vary across these conditions.

On Android, Google’s published instructions are based on a Pixel 8 running Android 15, with testing reported as of March 2025. The guidance itself warns that steps and behavior may differ by device and Android version. If your screen does not match the walkthrough, search the phone’s settings for the relevant feature name and check which keyboard is active before concluding the option is unavailable.

Language matters for input features as well as menus. Apple notes that QuickPath is not supported for every language, while Google’s information says availability for Gboard options can depend on language, device and app configuration. A feature that is missing for one language or setup may not be missing from the phone entirely.

If the keyboard is shifted but typing remains difficult

Check whether the difficulty comes from reaching keys, repeatedly tapping, or seeing and reaching other parts of the screen. A side-aligned keyboard addresses key reach; swipe typing or voice input offers alternatives to repeated taps; Reachability and Android system One-handed mode address screen navigation. Switching among these options based on the specific task is more useful than expecting one setting to solve all three problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check that you chose the side nearest the thumb you are using. On Gboard, Google describes controls for adjusting size and position, though the exact controls depend on the device and version. On iPhone, you can return to the centered layout by tapping the keyboard’s left or right edge if the one-sided arrangement is not working for you.

If the reduced or shifted layout is not comfortable, you do not have to keep it enabled. Return to the centered keyboard on iPhone by tapping an edge, or change Gboard’s side, size or position if those options are available in your version. Then decide whether another approach—such as swipe typing, dictation or a screen-navigation feature—better addresses the specific difficulty.

What to expect from one-handed typing features

These settings change where keys appear or provide another way to enter text; they do not establish that one-handed typing will be faster or more accurate for every user. Apple and Google’s cited materials explain feature behavior, not comparative performance. Try the keyboard placement and input method that feels manageable for the task, and keep in mind that supported languages and available controls can differ.

Google Play’s Gboard listing was shown as updated September 9, 2026. App and operating-system interfaces can change, so follow the controls visible on your own phone when they differ from a published walkthrough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical order is simple: first try the keyboard layout that puts keys nearer your thumb; next consider swipe typing or voice input if tapping is the tiring part; and use the system screen-reach feature only when you need to touch content outside the keyboard. Check the device, OS, keyboard app and language if a feature or menu is not present. The sources support these as available tools and procedures, not as a promise of identical behavior or a measurable performance gain for every person.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make the keyboard smaller and move it to one side?

On iPhone, open a text field, touch and hold the Emoji or keyboard-switch control, and choose the left- or right-handed keyboard layout. On Android, use Gboard’s One-handed mode to pin a reduced keyboard to the left or right; size and position controls may be available depending on the device and version.

Does iPhone Reachability make the keyboard easier to type on?

Reachability lowers the top half of the screen to help reach screen content and controls. It does not move the keyboard keys toward one thumb. For typing reach, use the iPhone’s left- or right-handed keyboard layout.

What is the difference between Android One-handed mode and Gboard One-handed mode?

Android system One-handed mode brings screen content, notifications and other navigation within reach. Gboard’s One-handed mode changes the keyboard layout by pinning a reduced keyboard to one side. Use the system setting for screen controls and Gboard’s feature for key reach.

Can I type one-handed without tapping every letter?

Yes, swipe-typing options such as Apple QuickPath and Gboard Glide Typing let you slide across letters instead of tapping each one. Dictation or voice typing is another option where available and appropriate. Language, device and configuration can affect availability, and the sources do not establish that these methods are universally faster or more accurate.

Why can’t I find one-handed keyboard mode?

Make sure the onscreen keyboard is open in a text field. On iPhone, try touching and holding the visible Emoji or keyboard-switch control. On Android, confirm that Gboard is the active keyboard before looking for its feature. Menus and availability vary by phone, OS version, language and keyboard configuration.

How do I put the iPhone keyboard back in the center?

Tap the left or right edge of the one-handed keyboard to restore the centered layout.

The Bottom Line

For typing reach, move the iPhone keyboard toward your thumb or pin Gboard to one side. If repeated taps are the problem, try swipe typing or dictation where available. Use Reachability or Android system One-handed mode for screen controls—not as substitutes for a one-handed keyboard layout.
