Start in your phone’s wallpaper settings, not the photo viewer. On a Pixel phone, open Wallpaper & style, choose Home screen or Lock screen, select the picture, adjust its preview when controls are available, and apply it. On a Pixel Tablet, use Settings → Wallpaper & style, choose the screen, select My photos or a supplied wallpaper, then tap Set wallpaper or Done. Other Android phones use different menus and may crop or reposition the image automatically.
What “fit” means on Android
Android wallpaper tools do not usually stretch every picture to match the display. They place the picture inside a wallpaper frame, then scale and crop it so the frame is filled. If the image and screen have different proportions, some of the picture must be trimmed or empty margins must remain. A preview that shows only a face, corner, or roughly one quarter of the original usually indicates framing or scaling rather than a damaged file.
The Home screen and Lock screen can also use different wallpaper locations. A phone may offer separate choices, a combined “both screens” option, or no visible choice until after you select an image. The exact behavior depends on the manufacturer’s software, Android version, launcher, and sometimes the screen you used to start the process.

Set a correctly framed wallpaper on a Pixel phone
Google’s Pixel phone instructions begin from the Home screen. The labels below are for Pixel software; a different Android phone may use another path.

- Tap Wallpaper & style.
- Choose the wallpaper source, such as your photos or a supplied collection.
- Select the picture you want to use.
- Choose the destination shown by the preview: Home screen, Lock screen, or another option your software provides.
- Inspect the preview. If the interface provides zoom or position controls, move the image until the important subject is inside the frame.
- Apply the wallpaper and return to the selected screen to verify the result.
Do not assume that a feature shown in a Pixel tutorial exists on every Pixel model. Google documents AI wallpaper for Pixel 8 and later, and special photo effects have their own model requirements. Those features are optional; they are not required to make an ordinary photo fit.
Set a wallpaper on a Pixel Tablet
Google’s Pixel Tablet help page documents a settings-based route and notes that some of its steps apply only to Android 14 and later.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpaper & style.
- Tap Lock screen or Home screen, depending on where you want the picture.
- Select a supplied wallpaper or tap My photos to choose your own image.
- Use the preview to check the framing. Reposition or zoom only if those controls are offered on your tablet’s build.
- Tap Set wallpaper or Done.
- If the tablet presents a screen-selection prompt, choose which screen or screens should display it. Google describes this choice conditionally as available only when the device offers it.
If your tablet does not show these labels, check its wallpaper entry in Settings or the manufacturer’s support instructions. A different Android release can move the same controls or combine them into one screen.
Use the preview to correct cropping
Move the subject before applying
When the preview provides a drag gesture, place the subject away from the edge that is being cut off. A portrait subject may need to move upward or downward; a landscape scene may need horizontal repositioning. Apply only after checking the complete lock-screen and Home-screen previews, because icons, clock text, and notification areas can cover different parts of the picture.

Zoom out when the control permits it
Some wallpaper pickers provide pinch-to-zoom or a slider. Zooming out reveals more of the image, but the picker may keep a minimum scale so that no blank border appears. If the image cannot be reduced far enough, the phone is enforcing its own fill behavior rather than ignoring your gesture.
Preview each destination separately
A picture can look acceptable behind Home-screen icons and still lose the subject under the Lock-screen clock. If the picker allows separate destinations, check each one before confirming. A screen-selection prompt may appear only after you tap the final apply button.
What to do when the image is “too large”
A Google Photos Help Community reader described an image as “too large” and said that only “one quarter of the image” appeared as the wallpaper background. That wording describes the visible result, not a formal Android error. The wallpaper preview or the phone’s software may be cropping and repositioning the file to fill the display.
First try the phone’s own controls
- Open the image through Wallpaper & style, rather than setting it directly from a gallery share menu.
- Look for a crop frame, drag gesture, pinch gesture, or zoom slider.
- Move the frame so the subject is centered in the area that remains visible.
- Cancel and repeat the process for the other screen if Home and Lock screens are configured independently.
Prepare a separate copy when the preview cannot show enough
If the picker has no useful zoom or position control, edit a copy of the picture before setting it. Crop the copy to a taller or wider composition that more closely resembles the phone’s display, or add margins around the subject so the automatic crop has room to work. Keep the original file unchanged; that preserves the full photograph for other uses.

Use your phone’s built-in image editor or any editor you already trust. The available tools vary, and the official Pixel instructions do not prescribe one editor or a universal crop ratio. Judge the result from the wallpaper preview instead of relying on a number that may not match your device.
Choose between Home screen, Lock screen, or both
Separate wallpapers
On the cited Pixel phone and Pixel Tablet workflows, you can enter the wallpaper settings for one destination and apply the picture there. Repeat the process for the other destination if you want two different images. This avoids accidentally replacing a lock image when you intended to change only the Home screen.
One wallpaper on both screens
Some builds offer a combined choice after you select the picture. Google’s Pixel Tablet instructions say, “If available, pick which screen(s) show the wallpaper.” The conditional wording matters: it is not a guarantee that every Android phone exposes a combined option. If you do not see it, set each destination separately.
When the option seems to have disappeared
A 2025 Google Photos Help Community question asked why separate Home and Lock wallpapers were no longer available. Community reports can help identify a device-specific change, but they are not universal Android documentation. Check whether an update changed the wallpaper entry point, whether you are using a different launcher, and whether the current picker is showing a screen choice only after an image is selected.

Why proportions cause unavoidable cropping
A phone display is generally taller than a standard camera photo or a landscape image. To fill the entire screen without black or blank bars, Android enlarges the image until both edges cover the frame. The enlargement can remove the sides of a wide photo or the top and bottom of a short one. A picture that already matches the display’s shape needs less trimming, but no reviewed source establishes one ratio that works for every Android model.
Edge-to-edge display is therefore not guaranteed for every file. If showing the entire scene matters more than filling every pixel, add a border or margins in an editor and accept that the margin will become part of the wallpaper. If filling the display matters more, compose a copy with the subject near the center and enough surrounding space for the picker’s crop.
Android phones from other manufacturers
Manufacturers rename both the settings page and the final buttons. Common starting points include an empty Home-screen press, Settings → Wallpaper, Wallpaper and personalization, or a lock-screen customization panel, but these labels are not guaranteed. Use the phone’s Settings search for “wallpaper” if the Home-screen shortcut is missing.

- Select the source containing your image, such as Gallery, Photos, or My files.
- Open the image in the wallpaper preview instead of applying it immediately from the file browser.
- Look for a screen selector and choose Home, Lock, or both when offered.
- Adjust position and scale using the controls that your device exposes.
- Apply the result, then check both screens for cut-off subjects, clock overlap, and icon obstruction.
If the labels or behavior do not match these steps, follow the support page for your exact phone model and Android version. Menu names can differ between regional software builds and between a manufacturer’s launcher and a third-party launcher.

Two ways to make a picture fit

Decide first whether the entire image must remain visible or only a particular subject must stay in frame. That choice determines whether you should add margins, accept a crop, or choose a different picture.
Fixes for common symptoms

About Google Photos and resizing
A 2022 Google Photos Help Community reply stated that Google Photos “cannot resize, only crop.” That is an individual community answer, not a current universal rule for every Photos release, gallery app, or phone. Treat it as a warning about the distinction between cropping and resizing: changing the visible composition is not the same as changing the file’s pixel dimensions, and neither action guarantees that a manufacturer’s wallpaper picker will use the whole image.
For a reliable result, perform the final check in the wallpaper preview. An edited file can still be cropped by Android, while an unedited file may fit acceptably after you move it in the picker.

These boundaries explain why a menu path copied from one device may fail on another even when both phones run Android. The underlying task is the same—choose a picture, frame it in the preview, select the destination, and apply it—but the controls are supplied by the device software.
A practical workflow that preserves the original
- Identify whether the problem is position, scale, or the image’s proportions by opening the wallpaper preview.
- Choose the intended destination before applying anything.
- Use the preview controls to place the important subject in a safe area.
- Check the Lock-screen clock and Home-screen icons for overlap.
- If the subject still cannot fit, make an edited copy with a more suitable composition or margins.
- Set the edited copy and verify the actual screen, not just the selection thumbnail.
- Keep the original image separately so future edits start from the full-resolution source.
This sequence avoids repeatedly overwriting the original and makes it clear whether the limitation comes from the picture or from the phone’s wallpaper picker.
