A cyberpunk-style walking HUD can make going outside feel like a mission: choose an accessible route, set a simple goal, and earn fictional XP or a streak for completing it. Gamification may help make physical activity more engaging, but no study establishes that this specific HUD—or any reward loop—will reliably make someone walk more or choose a natural setting.
What is SOLAR QUEST: Overcharge?
SOLAR QUEST: Overcharge is a design concept for turning an outdoor walk into a playful, arcade-like mission. A smartphone could display a fictional heads-up display (HUD) with a route, objective, progress indicator, and optional rewards such as XP or a streak. The game layer is a prompt for a real-world walk, not a proven treatment or a guarantee of behavior change.
The “solar” framing is aesthetic, not a requirement: the available studies do not show that sunlight is necessary for the effects discussed here. Nor is any particular phone, wearable, or accessory established as necessary. A smartphone is simply a plausible device for a GPS-enabled mobile game or HUD.

Can gamification make walking more fun?
Research suggests gamification can support physical activity on average, while leaving open whether a particular design will work for a particular person.

Evidence for activity
A 2016 systematic review identified 19 papers reporting empirical effects of gamification on health and wellbeing. It found positive effects in 59% and mixed effects in 41%; the authors described the evidence base as small and noted methodological limitations, including a lack of comparisons with non-gamified versions. They concluded: “The current state of evidence supports that gamification can have a positive impact in health and wellbeing, particularly for health behaviours.” Read the review in Internet Interventions.
A 2022 meta-analysis in the Journal of Medical Internet Research examined 16 randomized studies involving 2,407 participants. After sensitivity analyses, the authors found a small-to-medium average effect on physical activity. The estimated effect was larger when gamification was compared with inactive controls than when it was compared with active controls. That difference matters: a game may look more effective against doing nothing than against another activity-support approach. What the findings do not establish
The studies support cautious language such as “may help make activity more engaging.” They do not establish that missions, XP, streaks, arcade visuals, or this cyberpunk concept will make a specific person exercise more. There is also no cited head-to-head evidence showing that one HUD style, color palette, or reward-loop design is better than another.
Does walking in nature help your mood?
A 2022 systematic review compared outdoor physical activity in green natural settings with outdoor urban settings among adults. Its narrative synthesis favored natural settings for several psychological measures, and its meta-analyses found effects favoring natural environments for some psychological outcomes. The review included 24 experimental studies, with nine entering meta-analysis, and also reported high risk of bias and heterogeneity. The findings suggest possible psychological benefits; they do not show that nature exposure is a treatment or that every walk will improve mood. A separate randomized crossover study of 59 healthy adult office workers found that 20-minute blue-space walks improved immediate self-reported wellbeing and mood compared with an urban walk or resting. Measured cardiovascular outcomes did not show significant post-walk differences between blue and urban environments. This was a specific study of healthy office workers and short walks, not proof of a lasting effect or a result that applies to everyone. Read the study in Environmental Research.

Convenience, route placement, scenery, and reward structure can all matter. A 2024 field experiment created 13 routes in city and nature landscapes and surveyed 67 Pokémon GO players. Urban routes were more popular overall in that particular experiment. The result is a useful design warning: rewards alone do not guarantee that players will choose nature, and a route that is close or convenient may win over a more scenic one. It does not predict how SOLAR QUEST would perform, or mean every game should favor urban routes. Read the field experiment.

How to try the idea on a real walk
- Choose an accessible route. Pick a path you can walk safely and comfortably. If a natural route is inconvenient, a nearby urban route can still serve as the mission.
- Set one simple objective. For example, decide on a short loop or a time you want to spend walking. Treat the goal as a playful prompt, not a measure of health or fitness.
- Add optional game mechanics. A fictional HUD might award XP for finishing the route or track a streak for walks on separate days. These are design ideas, not evidence-backed prescriptions.
- Keep your attention on the environment. Check a phone only when stopped in a safe place. Do not look at a screen while crossing streets or walking where doing so could put you at risk.
- Adjust or stop when needed. Shorten the route or skip the game if the mechanics become distracting, stressful, or inconvenient.
What this concept can—and cannot—promise
SOLAR QUEST: Overcharge is best understood as a playful interface concept for encouraging an outdoor walk. Research offers a qualified reason to explore gamification as an activity prompt and suggests that outdoor green settings may benefit some psychological outcomes. It does not prove that a cyberpunk HUD causes more activity, that rewards will steer people toward nature, or that a walk will improve any individual’s mood.
