To make TikTok private, open Profile, tap Menu ☰, choose Settings and privacy > Privacy, and turn on Private account. Then use the separate Direct messages and Comments menus to decide who can contact you or reply to your posts. Private mode limits access to approved followers, but it does not hide your name, username, profile photo, or account from search.
What a private TikTok account actually changes
TikTok’s private-account setting controls who can follow you and who can view your posts. When the account is private, you approve follower requests instead of allowing anyone to follow automatically. Approved followers can access posts and certain profile information according to TikTok’s privacy controls. The setting is described in TikTok’s official guidance on choosing between a private and public account: TikTok Help Center: Choosing between a private or public account.
Private does not mean invisible
Anyone on or off TikTok can still see the account’s display name, username, and profile photo. TikTok also says people can search for the account even when it is private. Those details can identify an account in search results, messages, shared links, or other places where the profile appears.
A private account is therefore a visibility boundary, not complete anonymity. It limits access to posts and follower relationships, but it does not remove the basic public profile identity. If you need less identifying information exposed, review the name, username, and profile photo themselves rather than relying only on the privacy switch.

Public posts have a wider distribution path
On a public account, posts may be visible to and shared by people on or off TikTok, depending on the applicable settings. Switching to private reduces the audience for posts to approved followers, but the private setting should not be treated as a guarantee that every copy, link, screenshot, or prior interaction disappears.
This distinction matters when changing an account after posting publicly. Privacy settings govern current access, not a promise that someone who previously viewed, copied, linked to, or interacted with content can no longer possess it. Treat a switch to private as a way to limit future viewing and new follower access, not as a universal deletion tool.
Existing followers need separate attention
Turning on private controls future follower access; it does not state that people who were already approved automatically vanish from the follower list. If someone should no longer have access, review the account’s follower controls separately rather than assuming the privacy switch removes them.

That review is especially important when an account was public before the change. The private setting changes the approval requirement for new followers, while people already approved remain a separate account-management issue. Check the follower list deliberately and make any removals through the controls TikTok provides.
How to make your TikTok account private
- Open the TikTok app and tap Profile.
- Tap the Menu ☰ button at the top of the profile screen.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Open Privacy.
- Turn on Private account.
After the switch is enabled, new followers require approval. Posts and certain profile information are then governed by the private-account audience rather than being broadly available as they are on a public account. Individual posts can still have their own audience settings, so check a post’s audience when a particular video or photo needs a narrower or different audience.
What to check after enabling the switch
- Confirm that Private account is shown as enabled under Privacy.
- Review who already follows the account; the private switch does not itself promise to remove approved followers.
- Decide whether your display name, username, and profile photo reveal more than you want, because those remain visible to anyone on or off TikTok.
- Review individual post audiences if a specific post should not be available to all approved followers.
- Continue to the Direct messages and Comments menus; private mode does not replace those controls.
Use the full path rather than looking only in a profile-editing screen. TikTok can change labels or layout, but the Privacy page is where the account-level private switch is documented. If you do not see the same wording, open the current Privacy section and look for the account-visibility control there.
Private account versus private post
These are related but different decisions. A private account requires follower approval and limits the account’s posts to that approved audience. A post can also have its own audience setting, so one video or photo can be handled more narrowly without changing the account’s overall status. Conversely, making the account private does not mean every post has exactly the same audience setting. Check both levels when a particular item is sensitive.

Messages have a separate privacy menu. For an adult account, go to Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Privacy > Direct messages. TikTok separates incoming contact into categories, so changing the account to private does not by itself provide one universal message rule.
Choose a setting for each sender category
TikTok identifies two categories in the Direct messages settings: Potential connections and Others on TikTok. For each category, select either Requests or Don’t receive.

The exact categories and choices are documented in TikTok’s Manage direct messages guidance. Select Requests when you want the option to screen contacts without opening a normal conversation automatically. Select Don’t receive when you do not want that category to initiate a request.
Set the two categories independently. Allowing requests for one does not automatically enable them for the other, and choosing “Don’t receive” for one category does not describe every possible sender relationship. Read each label in the Direct messages page and make both choices intentionally.
How a message request works
For people who are not already eligible to message directly, TikTok uses a request flow. A request can be accepted, deleted, or reported. Accepting permits the conversation to proceed; deleting removes the request from your inbox; reporting sends it through TikTok’s reporting process.
This gives you a screening point rather than requiring you to start a normal conversation with every contact. If a request is unwanted but not a safety concern, delete it. If it violates TikTok’s rules or raises a safety concern, use the report option. If you want to continue the conversation, accept it. These actions apply to the request you are handling; they do not replace the category-level setting for future requests.
How private status affects people you follow
People you follow can send messages under TikTok’s rules. However, on a private account, an account you follow cannot message you until that account follows you back. This is an additional limit created by the private-account relationship, separate from the category switches.
That means following someone is not always enough for messaging when your account is private. The relationship may need to become mutual before the message is allowed. Unknown or otherwise ineligible accounts still follow the request rules shown in Direct messages, so check both the relationship and the category setting when troubleshooting contact.

Message settings for teenagers
Age changes what is available. TikTok says direct messaging is unavailable to users aged 13–15, so an adult-style Direct messages menu should not be expected for those accounts.
For ages 16–17, message rules depend on age, account type, and the sender category. TikTok’s teen guidance says that for a private teen account, other accounts cannot send message requests unless they follow the teen. Do not assume the adult options apply unchanged to a 16- or 17-year-old account. TikTok’s privacy and safety settings for users under 18 explains the teen-specific limits.
Family Pairing can also affect whether a teenager can change settings independently. If a setting appears unavailable or cannot be changed, the account’s age rules and Family Pairing relationship may be controlling it rather than an app error. Check the teen-specific guidance and the Family Pairing setup before trying to reproduce adult instructions.

How to control who can comment
Comments have their own audience control. Open Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Privacy > Comments. The audience choices depend on whether the account is public or private.

TikTok documents these choices in Manage comments. If a choice is missing, first consider the account type: Everyone is for public accounts, while Followers is for private accounts.
What “Friends” means
On TikTok’s terminology, Friends means followers whom you also follow back. It is narrower than every follower because it depends on a mutual follow relationship. If you choose Friends where the option is available, someone who follows you but is not followed back does not fit that relationship category.
Turn comments off for one post
The account-level comments setting is not the only option. TikTok also allows comments to be turned off for an individual post. Use that post-level control when comments are acceptable generally but not wanted on one video or photo. This is narrower than changing the account-wide audience and avoids changing comment access for every other post.
Post-level disabling is useful when the account’s normal audience is appropriate but a particular topic needs no replies. It also avoids confusing a temporary decision about one post with a permanent change to the account-wide Comments setting.

Allowing comments does not grant someone permission to send a direct message, and disabling message requests does not automatically disable comments. Set both menus deliberately. A private account limits post visibility and follower approval, while the Comments and Direct messages pages govern two different ways people can interact.
Private, public, or tightly restricted: choosing the right combination
Use the three controls together rather than treating “private” as a single all-purpose switch.

The available controls can vary by account type and age. Treat the labels shown in your app as authoritative for that account, especially for teen profiles.
Which combination fits common situations?
If your priority is controlling who sees future posts, start with Private account and then review existing followers. If your priority is reducing unsolicited contact while keeping posts public, leave the account public and set unwanted Direct messages categories to Don’t receive. If comments are the main concern, change the Comments audience or disable comments only on the affected post. These are separate decisions, so there is no need to use the broadest restriction everywhere.

If you want only mutual connections to interact, a private account can reduce who gains access, while Friends can narrow comments to people you follow back. Message requests still need their own review because comment and message permissions do not automatically mirror each other.
What private mode does not protect against
- Profile discovery: your name, username, and profile photo remain visible, and people can still search for the account.
- Approved followers: private mode controls approval, but it does not state that existing approved followers are automatically removed.
- Prior sharing: changing visibility does not promise that a copy, link, screenshot, or previous interaction is erased.
- Every interaction channel: direct messages and comments use separate menus, so both must be configured.
- Teen restrictions: users aged 13–15 cannot use direct messaging, and 16–17-year-old settings differ from adult settings.
- Outside-platform exposure: TikTok says public-account content may be seen or shared by people on or off TikTok, depending on settings.
These limitations are why a privacy check should include identity details, followers, posts, messages, and comments. A single switch cannot change all five at once.

The Private account switch is not where expected
Follow the complete path—Profile > Menu ☰ > Settings and privacy > Privacy—rather than looking only in the profile editor. TikTok’s labels and layout can change, so use the current Privacy page as the reference point. If a teen account cannot change a control, age-based rules or Family Pairing may be involved.
Direct messaging is unavailable
Check the account holder’s age first. Direct messaging is unavailable for ages 13–15. For ages 16–17, the options depend on age, account type, and sender category, so an adult menu may not appear.

A sender can still contact the account
Check both Direct messages categories and whether the sender already has an eligible relationship with the account. A private account adds limits, but people you follow and mutual relationships are handled differently from unknown accounts. Set each unwanted category to Don’t receive, and handle any existing request by accepting, deleting, or reporting it.
The desired comment audience is missing
Comment choices are tied to account type. Everyone is for public accounts, while Followers is for private accounts; Friends refers to followers the account follows back. If comments are needed only for a particular post, use the post-level option instead of changing the account-wide setting.
The account still appears in search
That behavior is expected. Private mode does not hide the account’s name, username, or profile photo, and TikTok says the account remains searchable. If search visibility is the concern, review what identifying information appears in those profile fields; do not expect the Private account switch to remove the profile from search.
A practical privacy checklist
- Open Privacy and decide whether posts should require follower approval.
- Remember that the name, username, profile photo, and searchable account identity remain visible even when private.
- Review existing followers instead of assuming the private switch removes anyone.
- Open Direct messages and set Potential connections and Others on TikTok independently.
- Use Don’t receive for categories that should not initiate requests; use Requests where screening is acceptable.
- Open Comments and select the audience appropriate to the account type.
- Disable comments on individual posts that need a narrower interaction policy.
- For a teen account, apply the under-18 rules rather than copying adult instructions.
- If Family Pairing is active, account for its effect on which settings the teen can change.
- Recheck the settings after changing account type, age-related controls, or a post’s audience.
TikTok’s official pages are the best reference when labels or availability change: private and public accounts, direct messages, comments, and under-18 privacy and safety settings.
