You can build a Telegram weather assistant by using n8n to coordinate the workflow, a weather API to retrieve current or forecast data, and Groq to turn that data into a clear reply. Telegram is the messaging interface; the weather service—not the language model—must supply the weather facts.

How the weather agent works

Keep data retrieval and language generation as separate jobs. The workflow receives a message, identifies the location and what the user wants to know, calls a weather service, checks the result, and gives the returned data to Groq to explain. It then sends the answer to the user through Telegram.

  1. Receive: A Telegram trigger starts the n8n workflow when a user sends a message.
  2. Interpret: Extract the location and request—for example, whether the user wants current conditions or a forecast.
  3. Retrieve: Call a weather API with the location and the appropriate request parameters.
  4. Validate: Check that the response contains usable data, identify its units and time period, and handle missing or ambiguous results.
  5. Explain: Pass the relevant weather values and timestamps to Groq with instructions to answer only from the supplied data.
  6. Reply: Send the generated answer back through Telegram.

n8n describes its platform as workflow automation software with integrations and AI capabilities. Its Telegram node documentation covers automating work in Telegram and connecting it with other applications.

Build the workflow in n8n

The following sequence is the core design, not a promise of identical node labels or configuration screens in every n8n version. Consult the current n8n documentation for the exact node options and credential setup in your deployment.

  • JOIN THE COMMUNITY: Connect to Ambient Weather Network to customize your dashboard tiles, share hyperlocal weather conditions via social feeds and create your own forecasts (coming soon)
  1. Start with a Telegram trigger. Configure the Telegram integration so an incoming user message can start the workflow. Keep the received message and the information needed to reply available to later steps.
  2. Extract the request. Identify the place and whether the user is asking about current conditions or a forecast. For a small bot, this can be handled with a simple parsing step; an AI extraction step is another option. If the location is unclear, ask the user to clarify instead of guessing.
  3. Look up the place and fetch weather data. Send the location to a weather provider and use its response to make the relevant current-conditions or forecast request. A tutorial published on July 6, 2026, demonstrates an n8n, Groq, Telegram, and Open-Meteo workflow using geocoding and forecast APIs, with separate AI steps for extracting location and activity and generating a recommendation: Build an AI Weather Assistant with n8n, Groq & Open-Meteo (Telegram Bot). Treat that video as an implementation example; check the weather provider’s current documentation for request parameters, forecast definitions, quotas, and licensing.
  4. Prepare a compact, explicit data object. Keep only the fields needed to answer the question, along with units, location, and the observation or forecast time. Do not silently convert units or present forecast values as current observations.
  5. Call Groq for the explanation. Supply the user’s question and the validated weather data. Instruct the model not to invent missing values, to distinguish forecasts from observed conditions, and to mention when the data does not answer the question.
  6. Send the answer to Telegram. Return a concise, readable response, preserving the relevant place and time context. Check current Telegram documentation for any message constraints that matter to your bot.

Connect Groq without treating it as the weather source

Groq documents chat completions at POST https://api.groq.com/openai/v1/chat/completions. The request requires a messages array and a model identifier. The available model identifiers and limits can change, so select one from Groq’s current documentation rather than hard-coding an assumed current choice. See the Groq API reference.

If your n8n workflow uses an OpenAI client library, Groq documents an OpenAI-compatible configuration with the base URL https://api.groq.com/openai/v1 and a Groq API key. Compatibility is not complete; do not assume every OpenAI feature or parameter will work unchanged. Check Groq’s OpenAI compatibility documentation for the feature you plan to use.

  • [Wireless Weather Station with Atomic Time&Date] Atomic alarm clock weather station can be used not only as a wireless indoor outdoor thermometer but also as an atomic clock with dual alarms.

For a straightforward weather assistant, a sequential workflow is usually easier to reason about: n8n fetches the weather first, then includes the result in the chat-completion request. A more explicit tool-use loop lets the model request a tool, has the surrounding application execute it, returns the result to the model, and allows the model to continue or answer. Groq describes this general pattern in its Tool Use Overview. In either design, the application—not the model—executes the weather API request.

Give Groq a bounded task

Make the prompt clear about what the model may use and what it must do when information is absent. For example, provide an instruction along these lines alongside the user’s question and the API response:

Answer the user's weather question using only the weather data provided. Distinguish current observations from forecasts. Preserve the supplied location, time period, and units. If the data is missing, ambiguous, or does not answer the question, say so rather than guessing.

This does not make the API response correct by itself. The workflow still needs to check that the returned location, time period, and values match the user’s request before asking the model to explain them.

Handle the cases that make weather replies unreliable

  • Ambiguous place names: If a lookup returns multiple plausible places, ask the user which one they mean. Do not silently select a location based on an unstated assumption.
  • Missing or failed weather data: Detect an empty, malformed, or failed provider response before the model call. Return a brief failure message or ask the user to retry; do not ask Groq to fill in missing weather values.
  • Units: Keep units attached to values throughout the workflow. If you convert them, do so explicitly and consistently rather than leaving the model to infer the unit.
  • Time context: Include the timestamp or forecast period returned by the provider. A response without that context can make an old observation or a forecast sound like current weather.
  • Unsupported questions: If the service response does not include what the user asks about, say that the available data does not establish it. Do not let a conversational answer imply that an unreturned measurement was checked.

Keep the implementation choices in proportion

The workflow’s responsibilities do not change if you run n8n as a managed service or host it yourself, but deployment details and maintenance responsibilities do. Choose based on your operational needs; the available sources do not establish one option as universally best.

Likewise, whether you retrieve current conditions, a forecast, or both depends on the user request and the weather provider’s documented endpoints and semantics. Verify those details with the provider before choosing request parameters. The example video uses Open-Meteo, but it is not a substitute for current provider documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can also choose between a direct chat-completion call after retrieval and a tool-use loop. The direct sequence makes the retrieval order explicit in n8n. A tool loop is useful when the model needs to decide whether to call an available function, but requires the surrounding workflow to execute that function and return its result correctly.
