Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To make a Spigot Minecraft server, choose the exact Minecraft: Java Edition revision, install its compatible Java runtime and Git, compile Spigot with the official BuildTools utility, then run the generated jar from a separate server folder. The first launch creates eula.txt and configuration files; after you accept the EULA, you can configure gameplay, add compatible plugins, test locally with localhost, and configure firewall and router access for remote players.
What Spigot is and what the setup involves
Spigot is a modified Minecraft: Java Edition server implementation based on CraftBukkit, with additional optimizations and features. Unlike a conventional application installer, Spigot is normally built on your own computer with SpigotMC’s BuildTools utility. The build process downloads the required vanilla server and Bukkit, CraftBukkit, and Spigot sources, then produces a server jar for the revision you selected.
A complete installation has two distinct locations:
- BuildTools directory: a temporary workspace used to download source code and compile the jar.
- Runtime server directory: a clean folder containing the generated Spigot jar, world files, configuration, logs, plugins, and startup script.
Keeping those locations separate makes updates easier and prevents build artifacts from being mixed with the files that run your world.

1. Select the Minecraft revision before installing Java
Start by deciding which Minecraft: Java Edition revision your players will use. Java compatibility is tied to the Minecraft revision, so installing Java first and choosing a version later can leave you with an incompatible runtime. The official Minecraft server documentation states that this server setup is only compatible with Minecraft: Java Edition.
Record the exact revision
- Choose the Minecraft Java Edition version you intend to host.
- Check the Spigot and BuildTools documentation for the Java runtime required by that revision.
- Use the same Minecraft version in every client that connects during testing.
Do not assume that a Java runtime that worked for an older server will work for a newer one. If you later change the Minecraft revision, verify the Java requirement again before rebuilding or launching.
2. Install the prerequisites
BuildTools identifies Git and Java as its two prerequisites. Spigot also expects a compatible Java installation, a jar compiled with BuildTools, and a separate directory for the running server.
Java
Install the Java runtime required by the revision you selected. After installation, open a terminal or command prompt and verify that Java is available:
java -versionThe output should identify a supported Java version. If the command is not recognized, add the Java installation’s executable directory to your operating system’s PATH, reopen the terminal, and run the check again.
Git
Install Git so BuildTools can obtain the source repositories it needs. Confirm that the command is available:

Choose a simple build location
Create a short, dedicated directory for BuildTools, such as C:MinecraftBuildTools on Windows or ~/Minecraft/BuildTools on Linux or macOS. A simple path avoids problems caused by spaces, restrictive permissions, or cloud-synchronization tools that lock files while they are being written.
3. Download and run BuildTools
Obtain BuildTools from the official Spigot distribution rather than downloading an arbitrary precompiled Spigot jar. Random jars can be outdated, modified, or malicious.
Build the selected revision
- Place
BuildTools.jarin the dedicated build directory. - Open a command prompt or terminal in that directory.
- Run BuildTools with the revision argument:
java -jar BuildTools.jar --rev <version>Replace <version> with the exact Minecraft revision you selected. BuildTools downloads the vanilla server and related Bukkit, CraftBukkit, and Spigot sources, applies the build process locally, and writes a Spigot jar when the process completes.

The build can take time and may download a substantial amount of source material. Keep the terminal open and read the final output for an indication that the jar was produced. If the process stops because Java or Git is missing, fix that prerequisite and run the same command again from the build directory.
The resulting filename reflects the Minecraft revision. Do not rename the jar until you know which file BuildTools produced; if you rename it to spigot.jar, use that same name in your startup script.
4. Create a dedicated server folder
Create a new folder used only by the running server, separate from the BuildTools workspace. Examples include C:MinecraftSpigotServer on Windows and ~/Minecraft/SpigotServer on Linux or macOS.
- Copy the generated Spigot jar from the BuildTools directory into the new runtime folder.
- Optionally rename the copy to
spigot.jarfor a stable startup command. - Do not copy the entire BuildTools workspace into the runtime folder.
- Give your user account read and write permission for the folder.
World data, logs, configuration files, plugin jars, and backups will all be stored here, so choose a location with enough disk space and include it in your backup plan.

5. Create a repeatable startup script
A startup script prevents typing the launch command manually and gives you one place to adjust Java memory settings. The script must be beside the Spigot jar and must use the jar’s actual filename.
Windows: start.bat
Create a text file named start.bat in the server folder with this content:

java -Xms1G -Xmx1G -jar spigot.jar
pause-Xms1G sets the initial Java heap and -Xmx1G sets the maximum heap in this example. These values are a launch example, not a universal capacity recommendation. Choose values your computer can sustain while leaving memory for Windows and other services. If your jar has a different name, replace spigot.jar in the command.
Linux or macOS: shell script
Create an executable script such as start.sh in the server folder:

chmod +x start.sh
./start.shKeep the terminal session attached while you are learning the setup so that startup messages and errors remain visible.
Set memory deliberately
Increasing -Xmx does not automatically increase player capacity or fix every performance problem. The operating system, other applications, world size, view distance, plugins, and the selected revision all need memory and CPU time. Start with a value your machine can spare, observe the server, and change the script only when you have a specific reason.

6. Perform the first launch and accept the EULA
Run the startup script once. Spigot creates initial files, including eula.txt, configuration files, and a server world directory. The server will stop or refuse to continue until the EULA setting is handled.

- Open
eula.txtin a plain-text editor. - Read the Minecraft EULA and change the agreement value from
eula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you accept its terms. - Save the file without changing its filename or extension.
- Run the startup script again.
Changing the value is an acknowledgement of the license terms, not a way to bypass them. If you do not accept the EULA, leave the value set to false and do not run the server for players.
7. Configure the server in server.properties
After the second launch, stop the server cleanly from its console before editing configuration. The main settings file is server.properties, located beside the jar.
Common settings to review
- Game mode: choose the default mode for new players.
- Difficulty: set the intended challenge level.
- Whitelist: enable it when only approved accounts should join.
- View distance: balance rendered world range against CPU and memory available on the host.
- Server port: confirm the port on which the server listens before configuring a firewall or router.
Change one group of settings at a time, save the file, and restart the server when a setting requires a full reload. Keep a copy of a working configuration before making major changes.

Operator permissions
Grant operator privileges from the server console only to accounts you trust. Operators can execute administrative commands and change the world, so do not give the permission casually. Remove operator status when it is no longer needed and use the whitelist for controlled access.
8. Add plugins safely
Plugins extend Spigot with administration, protection, gameplay, and other server features. They are Java files that run inside the server process, so treat every plugin as executable software.
- Stop the server completely.
- Obtain the plugin jar from a trusted Spigot plugin source.
- Check that the plugin supports your exact Minecraft and Spigot revision, plus the Java requirement you are using.
- Place the jar in the server’s
pluginsdirectory. The directory is created automatically if it does not already exist. - Start the server and watch the console for a successful enable message or a compatibility error.
- Stop and start the server fully after adding or removing plugins.
Do not replace a plugin jar while the server is running. A full restart lets Spigot load the new classes cleanly and avoids leaving old plugin state in memory. Keep plugin versions documented so you can identify which change caused a failure.

9. Test the server on the host computer
Before changing router settings, test the installation locally. Start the server, wait until the console reports that it is ready, and open the Minecraft Java Edition client using the same revision as the server.
- Choose Multiplayer, then add or direct-connect to a server.
- Enter
localhostas the server address when playing on the host computer. - Connect and confirm that you can move, place blocks, and use the expected commands.
- Review the console while connecting for authentication, plugin, or protocol errors.
If localhost works, the Spigot process and local configuration are functioning. A failed remote connection can therefore be investigated as a network or firewall problem rather than immediately rebuilding the server.
10. Let friends connect from outside your network
Players on another network may need both a firewall rule and a router port-forwarding rule. The commonly used Minecraft Java port is 25565, but your server may use a different value. Confirm the server-port setting in server.properties and follow your network provider’s policy.
Configure the host firewall
Allow inbound TCP traffic for the configured server port, or allow the Java process when your operating system presents an application-based rule. Restrict the rule to the intended network profile where possible. Do not disable the firewall entirely as a troubleshooting shortcut.
Configure port forwarding
- Give the host computer a stable local address, preferably through a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Create a port-forwarding rule that maps the external server port to the host’s local address and the same internal port.
- Save the router configuration and restart networking only if the router requires it.
- Give friends your public address and port through a private channel, not in a public post.
Some internet connections use carrier-grade NAT or block inbound connections, in which case ordinary port forwarding may not work. Your internet provider or router documentation determines whether a public inbound address is available. Players inside the same home network should use the host’s local network address rather than the public address when the router does not support hairpin routing.
Keep exposure limited
Expose only the port required by the server, keep the server and plugins updated deliberately, use a whitelist for a private world, and grant operator privileges sparingly. Never forward administrative services that are unrelated to Minecraft.
11. Back up and maintain the server
Back up the right files
Back up the world folders and the configuration that recreates your setup, including server.properties, eula.txt, plugin jars, and plugin configuration directories. Stop the server before copying a live world so files are not captured halfway through a save. Store at least one backup somewhere other than the host computer.
Update in a controlled order
- Read the release notes for the target Minecraft revision and each installed plugin.
- Make a verified backup of the current server folder.
- Build the target Spigot revision with BuildTools in a separate workspace.
- Test the new jar and plugins on a copy of the world first.
- Schedule a maintenance window, replace the runtime jar, and start the server.
- Check the console, world behavior, permissions, and plugin status before inviting players back.
Do not assume that a plugin compiled for one revision will work on another. If a plugin fails after an update, restore the previous jar and backup rather than repeatedly changing several variables at once.
12. Troubleshoot common failures

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Running Spigot at home gives you direct access to files, plugins, worlds, logs, and configuration. You also remain responsible for the computer, Java installation, network exposure, uptime, updates, and backups. It is a good fit when you already have a reliable machine and want complete control.
Managed hosting shifts much of that operational work to a provider. Compare services on the dimensions that affect your particular server:

- The selected Minecraft Java Edition revision is written down.
- The installed Java runtime is compatible with that revision.
- Git and Java both work from a terminal.
- BuildTools produced the jar from the official distribution.
- The runtime jar is in a separate, writable server folder.
- The startup script names the correct jar and uses sustainable heap values.
- You read the EULA and changed
eula=falseonly if you accepted it. server.propertieshas the intended gameplay, whitelist, view distance, and port values.- Plugins are from trusted sources and match the selected revision.
localhosttesting succeeds before remote networking is attempted.- Firewall and port-forwarding rules expose only the configured Minecraft port.
