Turn a script into an AI short film by converting every scene into a shot list, creating reference images, generating short clips one shot at a time, and editing the usable takes into a finished timeline. The reliable approach is an editorial workflow—not a single prompt: plan continuity first, prompt motion and camera behavior, iterate, then review story, sound and rights before export.

What an AI script-to-film workflow actually involves

Most current video generators create short clips rather than a complete multi-minute movie. A script therefore becomes a sequence of manageable shots that you generate, select and assemble. You still make the creative decisions about performance, pacing, continuity, sound and story; the model supplies candidate imagery and motion.

A practical pipeline has seven stages:

  1. Break the script into shots.
  2. Plan the visual language and make reference frames.
  3. Write one motion-focused prompt for each shot.
  4. Generate several exploratory takes.
  5. Lock character and scene continuity deliberately.
  6. Edit selected clips, dialogue, music and ambience on a timeline.
  7. Review the cut for story, technical errors and rights before exporting.

Skipping the first two stages usually produces attractive but disconnected clips. Treat generated footage as raw material that needs selection and editing.

1. Convert the script into a shot list

Start with a spreadsheet or document in which each row is one shot. A scene can contain a wide establishing shot, a medium performance, a close-up, a reaction and a cutaway; each should be planned separately because generators respond more consistently to one clear action and camera instruction than to an entire scene.

Include these fields for every shot

  • Shot ID and scene: Use a stable label such as 03A-04 so revisions remain traceable.
  • Subject: Name the character or object and include only the identity details needed in this shot.
  • Action: State what changes on screen, in a clear sequence.
  • Setting: Specify location, time of day and important props.
  • Framing and lens language: For example, wide shot, medium close-up, low angle or shallow depth of field.
  • Camera movement: Static, pan, tilt, dolly, tracking, handheld or a defined combination.
  • Duration: Select a target that fits the model’s available clip lengths and the edit.
  • Dialogue or voiceover: Keep spoken lines in the edit plan even if you add the final voice later.
  • Sound cues: Mark footsteps, a door slam, room tone, music entrance and other sync points.
  • Continuity notes: Record screen direction, eyeline, hand used for a prop, wardrobe, lighting direction and the character’s emotional state.

Separate visual action from dialogue. A prompt that asks a character to walk, turn, pick up a phone, deliver a long speech and cry in one take gives the model too many timing problems. Split the beats into shots and let the edit create the performance.

Example shot-list row

Field Example
Shot 03A-04
Subject and action Mara, wearing a yellow raincoat, stops under the station awning and looks toward the empty platform.
Framing Medium profile, 35 mm lens look
Camera Slow push-in, ending on her eyes
Duration 5 seconds
Lighting and atmosphere Blue-hour rain, warm fluorescent spill from the awning, wet reflections
Continuity Her bag remains on the right shoulder; train tracks stay screen-left; eyeline is screen-left
Sound Rain and distant rail hum; dialogue begins in the following close-up

2. Build a visual plan before generating video

Create a storyboard or a reference frame for every shot. The frame establishes the character’s appearance, wardrobe, location, composition and palette before motion is added. Keep a small continuity bible containing the approved character image, environment references, color palette, aspect ratio and lens vocabulary.

What to lock in the continuity bible

  • Character identity: Age range, facial features, hair, body type and distinguishing details.
  • Wardrobe and props: Exact colors, layers, jewelry, bags and objects that must persist.
  • Environment: Architecture, weather, season, time of day and recurring background elements.
  • Lighting: Key direction, color temperature, contrast and whether the scene is day, night or practical-lit.
  • Image language: Aspect ratio, framing conventions, lens feel, camera height and movement style.
  • Color and texture: A short palette and material description that can be repeated without changing wording.

Runway Gen-4 requires an input image; its documentation says the image establishes the visual starting point and the prompt should concentrate on motion. This makes a carefully prepared first frame more valuable than a paragraph that repeats the character’s appearance in every prompt. See Runway’s Gen-4 documentation.

Choose the delivery format early

Set the final aspect ratio before making references. Gen-4 documentation lists 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4 and 21:9 outputs. A vertical social film and a widescreen festival cut require different framing, so do not generate a tightly composed horizontal close-up if the final crop will be vertical.

3. Write one prompt for each shot

A useful shot prompt answers five questions: who or what moves, what the movement is, how the camera behaves, how time unfolds, and what atmosphere changes. Put the main action first, then camera, timing, lighting and style. Use positive phrasing and avoid a long list of prohibitions.

A reusable prompt pattern

[subject] performs [single, observable action]. [Camera movement and framing]. [Timing or progression]. [Lighting, atmosphere and environmental motion]. [Stable style or lens language].

Medium profile, slow dolly forward ending on her eyes. Rain streaks through blue-hour light while warm fluorescent reflections ripple on the pavement. Natural cinematic motion, restrained performance.”

Do not re-describe details already established by the reference image unless a detail is essential to the action. Repeating contradictory descriptors can cause identity drift. Runway’s prompting guide recommends simple prompts, high-quality input images, motion-focused text, positive phrasing and iteration; follow that guidance when refining a shot: Gen-4 Video Prompting Guide.

When a shot needs complex choreography

For a movement with several timed beats, describe the sequence in order rather than adding unrelated adjectives. Runway Gen-4.5 documentation describes support for complex sequenced instructions, camera choreography, precise timing and subtle atmospheric changes. Its documented modes are text-to-video and image-to-video. Read the current details at Runway’s Gen-4.5 documentation.

Even with a model that accepts sequences, keep the action physically simple. A three-beat shot—“the door opens, Mara steps through, camera tracks left”—is easier to cut and diagnose than a paragraph containing several characters, a prop exchange and a complex emotional turn.

4. Generate exploratory takes without wasting credits

Begin with a simple version of the prompt to test composition and motion. Once a take has the right direction, add only the missing control: a camera move, timing cue, lighting change or environmental action. Save the prompt, reference image, model, aspect ratio and seed with every accepted take.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A disciplined iteration loop

  1. Generate a baseline: Use the approved reference and a short motion prompt.
  2. Inspect the first second: Look for a broken pose, jump in identity or an incorrect camera start before judging the rest.
  3. Change one variable: If the camera is wrong, change the camera instruction; do not rewrite the character and setting simultaneously.
  4. Keep a good take: Download or mark it immediately and record its settings.
  5. Generate coverage: Make alternate angles, reactions and cutaways that can hide a weak transition.

Gen-4.5 is documented at 12 credits per second, with 2–10 second durations. A 10-second generation therefore consumes 120 credits at that documented rate, before any additional attempts; confirm the current account pricing and limits in the product interface because model economics can change. Gen-4 is documented as producing 5- or 10-second clips from an input image and text prompt. Its lower-cost Turbo option is described by Runway as an exploration choice compared with Gen-4, but the exact current credit schedule should be checked in your account.

Generate longer clips only when the edit genuinely needs them. Several short, purposeful shots give you more control over pacing than one long clip that contains unusable middle sections.

5. Keep the same character and world across shots

Perfect identity continuity is not automatic. The most reliable strategy is to reuse the same approved references and wording while limiting how much changes between shots.

Continuity controls that help

  • Use the same character reference image whenever the tool supports image conditioning.
  • Repeat a concise identity and wardrobe description verbatim in your shot records.
  • Keep environment descriptors, palette and lighting direction stable for a sequence.
  • Match eyelines and screen direction: if Mara looks screen-left in one shot, preserve that geography in the reverse.
  • Use a fixed seed where available to seek similar generations, while treating it as a repeatability aid rather than a guarantee.
  • Keep camera height, lens language and framing consistent unless the script calls for a deliberate change.
  • Use cutaways, hands, objects or reaction shots to bridge a transition when a face match is imperfect.

A seed can produce similar outputs, but it does not guarantee identical identity, motion or lighting. Review every accepted clip next to the preceding and following shots, not in isolation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for known failure points

  • Faces and hands: Inspect fingers, teeth, eyes and jewelry at the intended delivery resolution.
  • Props: Check that an object remains in the same hand and does not change shape between cuts.
  • Screen direction: Reverse movement can make two individually good clips appear to contradict each other.
  • Backgrounds: Moving architecture, signs and reflections can reveal a discontinuity even when the character matches.
  • Performance: A generated smile or gesture may not fit the scripted emotion; select a different take or cover it with a reaction.

6. Assemble the film on a timeline

Generation and editing are separate jobs. Put the selected clips into a timeline in script order, trim unusable starts and ends, and use cutaways or reaction shots to cover continuity gaps. Add dialogue, voiceover, music, ambience, titles and credits as edit layers rather than trying to force every element into the video prompt.

Editing with Adobe Firefly and Runway models

Adobe documents a workflow in which you select Runway Gen-4.5 in Firefly’s video editor, enter a text prompt, optionally upload a first-frame image, set a seed and generate a clip. You then drag the generated video from the Generation history panel onto the timeline, where it can be trimmed or combined with other material. The documented steps are at Adobe’s Firefly instructions for generating videos with Runway models.

  1. Import or create the reference image for the shot.
  2. Choose the documented Runway model and set the desired aspect ratio and seed.
  3. Enter the shot-specific motion prompt and generate candidates.
  4. Drag the chosen generation onto the timeline.
  5. Trim the first and last frames, align action on cuts and add the next shot.
  6. Place dialogue, room tone, music and effects on separate tracks.
  7. Watch the sequence at normal speed and make a second pass for continuity.

If you use another editor, the same editorial logic applies: preserve original generated files, label versions, and keep a project folder containing references, prompts, audio and exports.

Use editing to solve generation problems

  • Cut on a movement such as a turn, blink or object passing the lens.
  • Insert an establishing shot when the location changes abruptly.
  • Use a reaction close-up to bridge mismatched body motion.
  • Cover an awkward transition with a hand, prop, darkness or a sound-led cut.
  • Let ambience continue across a cut so separate generations feel like one space.

7. Sound, dialogue and titles

Visual generation does not remove the need for an audio plan. Record or generate dialogue separately, then align it to the selected performance. Use room tone and environmental effects to connect shots recorded from different generations. Check that music and effects are licensed for the intended release; a visually original clip can still contain an audio-rights problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review titles and credits at the final output size. Generated text inside a scene can be distorted, so add essential names, subtitles and credits in the editor when possible. Proofread spelling, timing, contrast and safe margins on both desktop and mobile crops.

Which AI video tool should you use?

Choose by workflow rather than by a single quality claim. The important differences are whether the model accepts text, an image or both; clip duration; repeatability; camera and timing control; cost of iteration; and whether you can edit the result immediately.

Option Generation and controls Documented duration or cost Best fit in a short-film workflow Limits or availability
Runway Gen-4.5 Text-to-video and image-to-video; documentation describes complex sequenced instructions, camera choreography, precise timing and atmospheric changes. 2–10 seconds; 12 credits per second in the cited documentation. Planned shot generation when you need detailed motion and camera direction. Credit usage and account limits can change; verify current terms before production.
Runway Gen-4 Requires an input image plus a text prompt; supports fixed seeds for similar generations and multiple aspect ratios. 5- or 10-second clips; exact current credit prices are not stated in the cited documentation. Image-conditioned shots where a prepared frame controls appearance and composition. It is not a script-to-feature shortcut; you still need many shots and an edit.
Adobe Firefly video editor using Runway models Prompt a clip, optionally upload a first frame, set a seed, then drag generations from history to a timeline for trimming and combining. Not stated in the cited Adobe documentation. Generation-plus-editing in one documented workspace. Model access, export options and account limits depend on the current Firefly plan and region.
Sora Not a current option for this workflow. OpenAI states the product was no longer available as of April 26, 2026. Do not build a production plan around it without a new official availability announcement. See the official OpenAI availability notice.

For a practical starting combination, use an image-conditioned generator for controlled shot creation and an editor that lets you trim and combine those shots. Verify model names, credit rates, duration limits, export resolution and commercial-use terms immediately before committing to a project.

  • The story is understandable without reading the shot list.
  • Every scripted beat appears, or an intentional edit explains its omission.
  • Characters retain face, wardrobe, props and emotional continuity.
  • Eyelines, screen direction and geography are consistent.
  • Hands, faces, reflections, physics and object interactions hold up at delivery size.
  • Lip movement, dialogue timing and subtitles are aligned.
  • Music, ambience and effects have appropriate rights and do not mask speech.
  • Titles and credits are spelled correctly and remain inside safe margins.
  • The aspect ratio, frame rate, audio channels and export resolution match the destination.
  • Original generations, project files and final masters are backed up separately.

Common problems and practical fixes

The character changes between shots

Return to the approved reference image, repeat the concise identity and wardrobe descriptors, and reduce changes in lighting or angle. If the mismatch remains, generate a cutaway or reaction that does not show the face clearly, then re-enter the character on a new reference frame.

The model ignores the camera move

Remove decorative style language and state one observable movement with a start and end: “static medium shot, then a slow pan right as the train enters.” Generate a shorter test, change only the camera instruction, and keep the version whose motion edits cleanly.

The action starts too late or ends abruptly

Describe the timing explicitly and leave handles for editing. For example, ask the subject to begin already in position, perform one action, and hold for a beat at the end. Trim excess frames on the timeline rather than forcing another complex prompt.

The scene feels like unrelated clips

Match reference frames, palette, lighting direction, lens language and sound beds. Add an establishing shot or a continuing ambience track, and cut on movement or eyeline to make the transition intentional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dialogue and lip sync are unreliable

Keep spoken lines short in generated shots, choose takes with stable facial motion, and place the final dialogue track in the editor. Cover a questionable mouth movement with a profile, over-the-shoulder or reaction shot while preserving the audio timing.

How to plan a project realistically

Estimate the film by shots, not by screenplay pages. A 60-second piece might require a dozen or more usable shots after trimming, plus alternate takes and cutaways. Budget generation credits for exploration, not only the final clips: a documented Gen-4.5 rate of 12 credits per second means every 5-second candidate uses 60 credits, and rejected attempts use credits too.

Keep a production log with shot ID, prompt version, reference filename, model, duration, seed, aspect ratio, selected take and notes. This makes a revision reproducible when a client changes one line or a continuity error appears late in the edit.

The finished result is strongest when AI handles controlled visual generation and you handle structure, selection, sound and judgment. Decompose the script, condition each shot with a clear visual reference, iterate one variable at a time, and let the timeline—not a single all-purpose prompt—turn the pieces into a film.
