If a PDF shows a page as a screenshot, its words may be stored only as pixels. Ctrl+F cannot find them until optical character recognition (OCR) reads the image and adds searchable text. In Adobe Acrobat, run All tools > Scan & OCR > In this file > Recognize Text, then save and check the result. Adobe’s OCR instructions describe this workflow and its searchable text layer.
Why can you see words in the PDF but Ctrl+F finds nothing?
A rendered screenshot PDF can look like a page of text while containing only an image of that page. The letters you see are pixels, not characters the PDF search function can match. Adobe describes scanned PDFs as image-based documents that need OCR to become searchable. Adobe explains how OCR works in Acrobat.
OCR analyzes the visible image, recognizes characters and words, then adds a text layer to the PDF. Search can use that layer even when the page still looks exactly like the original image.
How do you add searchable text in Acrobat desktop?
- Make a backup. Keep an untouched copy of the PDF so you can return to the original if recognition or editing causes a problem.
- Open the PDF in Acrobat and select All tools > Scan & OCR.
- Choose In this file, then set the page range and recognition language as appropriate for the document.
- Select Recognize Text and let Acrobat process the pages.
- Save the processed PDF, then test it by searching for a word that is clearly visible on a page. Also try selecting or copying a short passage.
Adobe says this process creates a searchable text layer. Its guidance also calls for reviewing the result and correcting recognition errors or rerunning OCR with adjusted settings when needed. See Adobe’s current Acrobat steps and review guidance.

How do you keep the screenshot’s original appearance?
If preserving the rendered page exactly matters, choose an OCR output that keeps the original image and adds recognized text invisibly. Adobe’s API names this mode SEARCHABLE_IMAGE_EXACT. Its SEARCHABLE_IMAGE mode can clean or deskew the image, which may improve its appearance but can change the underlying rendering. Adobe documents both searchable-image modes.
For a one-off Acrobat desktop task, use the Scan & OCR workflow and inspect the result. For repeatable automated jobs, the API’s output modes let you specify whether exact image preservation or image cleanup is the priority.

What should you check after OCR?
- Search for several visible words, including one from a page near the end of the document.
- Select and copy a passage, then check that the extracted text is legible and in a sensible order.
- Compare the recognized text with the image. OCR can miss or misread characters, so correct errors or rerun recognition with adjusted settings if the result is incomplete or inaccurate.
- If search still fails, check whether text can be selected or copied. The cause cannot be determined without examining the file; rerun OCR only if the document lacks a usable text layer.

OCR makes recognized words available as actual text, which addresses the basic problem with an image-only page. It does not by itself guarantee accessible tags, correct reading order, or full WCAG conformance. W3C explains that scanned images of text are inherently inaccessible as actual text and describes OCR as a way to make text available; additional document structure may still be needed.
