In the documented experimental builds, Ice Balls are the ingredient used to brew a Potion of Freezing. The recipe appears in Minecraft Java 26.4 Snapshot 3 and Minecraft Bedrock Preview 26.60.29. These are preview releases, not confirmation that the potion is available in a stable release; check your edition and build before trying it.
What you need to brew a Potion of Freezing
- A Minecraft build that includes the feature: Java 26.4 Snapshot 3 or Bedrock Preview 26.60.29.
- Ice Balls, the brewing ingredient named in both official changelogs.
The changelogs do not specify the brewing stand’s slot-by-slot arrangement or bottle input. Use Ice Balls as the named ingredient in a compatible build, and follow that build’s in-game recipe display if it does not make the ingredient placement clear. The Bedrock changelog labels this content as an Experimental Feature.
How to brew it in Java and Bedrock
Java Edition: Snapshot 26.4 Snapshot 3
The Java snapshot says a Potion of Freezing can be brewed using Ice Balls. It also names Lingering Potion and Splash Potion as brewable using Ice Balls. Its changelog does not give a more detailed brewing sequence.

The Bedrock preview likewise names Ice Balls as the ingredient for Potion of Freezing. It also lists Lingering Potion and Splashing Potion as brewable using Ice Balls. The content is under Experimental Features, so make sure the relevant experimental content is enabled in the world where you are testing it.

How to make Arrows of Freezing
The documented arrow recipe differs by edition. Follow only the method for your build:
- Bedrock Preview 26.60.29: Dip Arrows into a Cauldron filled with Potion of Freezing.
- Java 26.4 Snapshot 3: Put a Lingering Potion of Freezing in the center of a crafting table and surround it with eight Arrows.
What the Freezing effect does
In the Java snapshot, the effect makes players shake and gradually freeze as they would in Powdered Snow. They eventually take damage if the effect continues. Leather Armor protects against freezing, as it does in Powdered Snow, but it does not prevent the effect from being applied or remove it. Mobs take additional damage while affected; the snapshot says mobs vulnerable to freezing receive five times the damage.

Why the recipe may not work in your world
- Your build may not include it. The official documentation cited here is for a Java snapshot and a Bedrock preview. It does not establish stable-release availability.
- You may be using the wrong edition’s arrow method. Bedrock’s cauldron method and Java’s crafting-table method are distinct instructions; do not substitute one for the other.
- The ingredient placement is not documented. The changelogs identify Ice Balls but do not provide a brewing-stand slot sequence. Check the recipe display in your compatible build rather than relying on an unverified arrangement.
