To make a PNG transparent, remove or clear the unwanted background in an image editor, then export the result as a PNG with transparency enabled. Saving an unchanged image as PNG will not remove a white or colored background already in the picture.
How do I make a PNG background transparent?
- Choose the right image-editing approach. A photo cutout, flat-background logo, and design canvas each call for a suitable selection or background-clearing method; there is no single method established as best for every image.
- Remove the background or clear the background element. In Canva, its BG Remover tool is one documented option. In GIMP, the background layer can be removed after the image has an alpha channel.
- Check that the area is actually transparent. A checkerboard indicator often marks transparency in an editor. If the area still appears white, it may be white artwork rather than a see-through area.
- Export as PNG and preserve transparency. Select PNG and enable the editor’s transparent-background setting where required.
- Verify the exported file. Reopen it or place it over a contrasting color to check whether the intended area shows through. Inspect it in the app or destination where you plan to use it; display behavior can vary.
How do I remove a white background from a PNG?
First determine whether the white area is part of the image or a background layer. If it is part of the image, use an appropriate background-selection or removal tool; if it is a separate design element or layer, clear or remove that element. Then export with transparency preserved. Changing the file extension or saving the same white-background image as PNG does not make the white pixels transparent.

Canva’s transparent-background tool page describes uploading an image, selecting BG Remover, and downloading the result as a transparent PNG. Check the result before using it, especially around fine edges or similar-colored areas; the cited page does not establish a guaranteed cutout quality for every image.

Download a design with transparency
- Set the design background to white or delete the background element, as appropriate to the design.
- Choose PNG as the file type.
- Enable “Transparent background” in the download settings.
Canva’s Help Center says transparent-background downloads are available on Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva Business, Canva Education, and Canva for Nonprofits plans. It also says Canva Docs cannot be downloaded with a transparent background. Plan eligibility and interface labels can change, so check the current download screen and help page.

Make a transparent PNG in GIMP
- Open the image and check the Channels dialog for an “Alpha” entry. GIMP’s 3.0 manual states, “To export an image with alpha transparency, you must have an alpha channel.”
- If needed, add an alpha channel before removing the background. Then remove the background layer or create transparency in the area you want cleared.
- Export the edited image as PNG. GIMP documents this format for exporting an image with alpha transparency.
See the GIMP 3.0 manual’s transparency instructions for the documented workflow. The central requirement is an alpha channel; the older 2.10 manual is not needed for these current instructions.
Why is my PNG still showing a white background?
- The white area was never removed. PNG can store transparency, but choosing PNG does not erase background content from an image.
- The export did not preserve transparency. Return to the download or export settings and check that PNG is selected and any transparent-background option is enabled.
- The design has a white background element. Clear or delete that element before exporting, rather than relying on the file format to remove it.
- The image lacks an alpha channel. In GIMP, check the Channels dialog for “Alpha”; GIMP’s manual says alpha transparency requires it.
- The destination is showing a white preview. Reopen the file or place it over a contrasting color to check the exported result, then inspect it in the intended destination.

The available documentation does not establish which workflow produces more accurate edges, is faster, or is better for every image. Choose based on whether you need a guided background-removal tool or direct layer and alpha-channel editing.
