To keep every part of a photo, set it from Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos, then pinch and drag in the Lock Screen preview until the important subject is positioned correctly. If the photo and your iPhone display have different shapes, however, the image cannot fill every edge while also preserving every original pixel unless you add surrounding background. You can either accept bands around the image, crop it deliberately, or use Photos’ Extend tool on a supported Apple Intelligence device.
Why an uncropped photo may not fill the whole wallpaper
A photograph has a fixed width-to-height ratio. An iPhone wallpaper frame has its own ratio, and the two shapes often do not match. A landscape photo placed in a tall portrait frame is the most obvious example: making the photo tall enough to reach the top and bottom leaves unused space at the sides, while making it wide enough to reach both sides leaves part of the top or bottom outside the frame.
There are only three geometric outcomes:
- Leave surrounding space: keep the original image unchanged and accept bands or a background around it.
- Crop: enlarge the image until the display is filled, allowing some of the original edges to fall outside the frame.
- Add content: extend the background beyond the original borders so the whole subject remains and the new frame can be filled.
No iPhone setting can defeat that shape mismatch without using one of those outcomes. The practical choice is therefore whether you value every original edge, a full-bleed screen, or an expanded background more.

First try the wallpaper preview: keep the original photo
If preserving the composition matters more than filling every pixel of the screen, start with Apple’s wallpaper picker rather than editing the image. Apple documents the wallpaper gallery and its positioning gestures in Change the wallpaper on iPhone and Create a custom iPhone Lock Screen.

Set the photo from Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos, then select the image you want to use.
The selected picture opens in the Lock Screen customization view. Do not confirm it immediately. Treat this screen as a framing tool: check the entire preview, the subject’s position, and anything that could be covered by the clock or widgets.
Position and zoom without editing the file
- Use a two-finger drag to move the photo within the preview. This lets you place a face, building, pet, or other focal point where it will remain visible.
- Pinch open with two fingers to zoom in. Zooming can make a smaller subject more prominent, but it also pushes more of the outer image beyond the frame.
- Pinch closed to zoom out when the preview allows more of the original image to be shown. Zooming out may reveal empty space or a mismatch between the photo’s shape and the wallpaper frame.
- Inspect the top, bottom, and side edges after every adjustment. Also check the clock, widgets, and any Lock Screen controls that could overlap important details.
- When the composition looks right, finish the Lock Screen setup and apply the wallpaper.
This approach does not modify the original in Photos. It changes how the image is framed for the wallpaper, so you can return to the original file and try a different position later. The preview is the authority for what will actually be visible; a photo that looks complete in Photos can still lose an edge when placed behind the Lock Screen interface.
When this method is the right compromise
Use the preview-first method when a person or object must stay visible, when you may want to reuse the photo elsewhere, or when you would rather tolerate some surrounding space than permanently remove content. It is also the quickest way to discover whether the particular image already fits well enough without an edit.

Use the Photos Wallpaper preset when a crop is acceptable
If you want a clean, edge-to-edge wallpaper and can choose which parts of the image to sacrifice, Photos includes a preset named Wallpaper. Apple describes this crop workflow in Crop, rotate, flip, or straighten photos and videos on iPhone.

Apply the preset
- Open the Photos app and open the image.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap the Crop control.
- Open the aspect-ratio or preset options and choose Wallpaper.
- Move the crop box so the important subject remains inside it. Check both the top and bottom edges, because a portrait wallpaper crop can remove more from a landscape source.
- Tap the control to confirm the crop, then choose to save the edit when you are satisfied.
The Wallpaper option is a crop preset, not a “fit entire image” command. It changes the framing to the preset’s shape. The original composition is therefore not guaranteed to survive intact. If you are unsure, save the image as a new version or use Photos’ option to discard the edit instead of replacing a file you may need later.
Wallpaper versus other crop presets
Photos also offers presets such as Square and 9:16. Those names describe different target shapes and are not interchangeable with Wallpaper. A 9:16 crop may be useful for a general portrait image, but it does not promise the same framing as the Wallpaper preset in the current Photos interface. Choose the preset that matches the destination, then inspect the result rather than assuming that a named ratio will preserve the subject.
Check the edited image in the actual Lock Screen
After saving, return to Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos and select the edited version. Even a deliberate crop can need a small repositioning because the Lock Screen clock and widgets occupy part of the usable visual area. Use the preview gestures again, but avoid zooming so far that you undo the careful framing you made in Photos.
Use Photos’ Extend tool to fill more space without cutting off the subject
For a true no-crop result that still fills more of the frame, Apple documents an Extend tool in Photos. It creates additional background beyond the original image rather than merely enlarging the existing pixels. Check whether Extend is available
Apple’s guide specifies that this feature depends on an Apple Intelligence-compatible device and on language and regional availability. The control therefore will not appear on every iPhone. If you cannot find it, that absence is an availability limitation, not an indication that you missed a hidden wallpaper setting.
Extend the background
- Open the photo in Photos.
- Tap Edit.
- Open Tools, then choose Extend when it is offered.
- Use the pinch or drag gesture in the editing view to adjust how much of the surrounding area should be expanded.
- Review the generated area for unwanted shapes, seams, or details that do not belong in the scene.
- Tap Extend to apply the result, then save the edited image if the preview is acceptable.
Extend is most useful when the central subject is already well placed and the missing area is ordinary background such as sky, a wall, floor, or an out-of-focus scene. It does not restore original pixels that were never photographed; it creates additional surrounding content. Inspect the result at the intended wallpaper size and reject it if the new background looks distracting.
Use the extended copy as the wallpaper
Once the extension is saved, select that version through Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos. The Lock Screen preview still allows positioning and zooming, so use those controls to make a final adjustment. Extending the background gives you more room, but it does not remove the need to check the clock, widgets, and edges in the final preview.
What to do when Extend is unavailable
There is no software switch that can both preserve every original edge and fill a differently shaped display without adding pixels. If your iPhone does not offer Extend, choose one of these honest alternatives:

- Keep the photo unchanged: use the wallpaper preview, zoom out as far as it allows, and accept surrounding bands or an unfilled area.
- Choose a better-matched photo: a portrait-oriented image may fit a tall wallpaper frame with less repositioning or cropping.
- Crop deliberately: use the Wallpaper preset and decide exactly which edges can be removed.
- Create a background outside the phone: if you have another image editor that can place the photo on a larger canvas, export that composite and then set it as the wallpaper. The resulting file will contain added background, so it is not an uncropped copy of the original photograph.
Do not keep enlarging an image in the preview in the hope that it will reveal more content. Zooming in always shows less of the outer frame. Zooming out can show more, but it cannot change the source image’s shape.

The table’s “fills” column describes what each method can achieve in practice, not a guarantee for every image. The source shape, the wallpaper frame, and the amount of zoom available determine the final result.

The subject is cut off in the Lock Screen preview
Pinch closed to zoom out, then drag with two fingers to move the subject toward the center of the visible frame. If the subject still cannot fit without losing an edge, the photo’s shape is too different from the wallpaper frame for a no-crop, full-screen result. Use an extended version, accept surrounding space, or make a controlled crop instead of repeatedly changing the same zoom level.
The photo fills the screen, but the face or object is behind the clock
Move the image downward or sideways in the customization preview so the focal point is clear of the clock and widgets. A technically complete crop can still be a poor wallpaper if interface elements cover the reason you chose the photo. Recheck the preview after changing widgets, because their placement changes the usable visual area.

There is a blank strip at one side
A blank strip means the image was zoomed out far enough to preserve more of its original shape than the wallpaper frame can accommodate. That is the expected result of prioritizing the full photo. You can leave it, select a different image, crop with the Wallpaper preset, or add background with Extend where supported.
The Wallpaper preset is missing
Make sure you are editing a photo in Photos, tap Edit, and then open the crop controls. The preset is part of the crop workflow, not part of the Wallpaper settings page. If the interface still differs, use the wallpaper preview as the no-edit option and avoid assuming that another ratio has the same framing.
Extend is missing from Tools
Apple documents Extend with Apple Intelligence, language, and regional requirements. Confirm that your device and current settings meet those requirements; otherwise, use the unchanged-photo, alternate-photo, or deliberate-crop options. The absence of Extend does not prevent you from setting a normal photo wallpaper.

Undo or discard that edit and inspect the original. Extend adds surrounding content, so repeated textures, architectural lines, faces, text, and sharp borders can reveal the generated area. Try a smaller extension, reposition the subject before extending, or choose a photo with a simpler background.
The saved crop changed the original photo
Return to the photo’s edit view and use the option to revert or discard the edit if Photos still offers it. For future wallpaper experiments, keep an untouched original and create a separate edited copy before applying a crop or extension.
A reliable decision process
- Decide what cannot be lost. Mark the face, person, text, landmark, or other detail that must remain visible.
- Try the wallpaper preview without editing. Use Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos, then pinch and drag.
- Inspect the full Lock Screen. Check all four edges and the clock and widgets, not just the center of the photograph.
- Choose the trade-off. If the subject fits and a little surrounding space is acceptable, keep the original. If a full-bleed frame matters, crop. If preserving the subject and filling more space both matter, check whether Extend is available.
- Make one edit at a time. Apply the Wallpaper crop or Extend in Photos, save the result, and preview that version in the actual wallpaper picker.
- Keep the original safe. Do not replace the only copy of a valuable photo until you have confirmed that the wallpaper framing works.
The shortest answer for each goal
- “I want every original edge”: set the photo from the wallpaper picker, zoom out, and accept that the display may not be filled.
- “I want a full-screen wallpaper”: use Photos > Edit > Crop > Wallpaper, then check the subject in the Lock Screen preview.
- “I want the subject intact and the frame filled”: use Photos > Edit > Tools > Extend if Apple Intelligence, language, and region support it; otherwise, keep surrounding space or crop deliberately.
The important distinction is between repositioning and resizing the composition. Pinching and dragging changes which part of the existing photo is shown. The Wallpaper preset removes edges. Extend creates new surrounding background. Once that distinction is clear, you can choose a method without expecting an iPhone setting to perform an impossible fourth option.
