Stretch a sheer, low-denier stocking over the front of your lens and secure it with an elastic band to create a soft-focus effect in camera. The result can range from a gentle glow to visible fabric patterns, depending on tension, color, focal length, lighting, and exposure.
What you need and how to set it up
The basic setup calls for sheer, low-denier hosiery and an elastic band. Use a clean piece of fabric and keep it clear of the lens barrel controls you need to operate, especially zoom and focus controls.
- Cut or position a section of hosiery large enough to cover the front of the lens.
- Stretch it across the lens opening. Pull it taut for a subtler effect, or leave some slack for folds and visible patterns.
- Secure the fabric around the lens with an elastic band without blocking controls.
- Take a test photo, inspect it on the camera, and adjust the tension or fabric position before shooting more.
This is an experimental technique rather than a calibrated filter: the fabric’s weave, placement, and interaction with the scene all affect the image. Wendy Evans’s Digital Camera World tutorial demonstrates tight and slack setups and emphasizes trying different lighting and lenses.
How tension and fabric color change the look
Tight versus loose
A tighter stretch makes the fabric easier to see through and generally reduces the diffusion. Looser fabric can create stronger softening, but its waves or weave may become visible as patterns. Adjust gradually: even a small change in tension can alter how much texture appears.

Tan, white, and dark hosiery
Tan hosiery may add warmth, white hosiery can soften a bright scene, and dark fabric can lower contrast while emphasizing bright highlights. These are possible effects, not guaranteed results; the fabric and lighting in your own setup matter.
Colored hosiery can tint the whole image. Set white balance manually if you want to preserve that tint; automatic white balance may try to neutralize it. Evans’s tutorial illustrates tan fabric in a dim chapel, white fabric outdoors, and nearly black material against bright light, where the image took on a pinhole-like appearance with substantially reduced contrast.

Choose a lens and light that reveal the effect you want
Focal length changes how prominent the weave looks. In Evans’s examples, the material is more apparent at 24mm and less distinct with a telephoto lens. A related Digital Camera World tutorial on pantyhose headshots likewise reports that longer focal lengths compress the net pattern and increase diffusion. Treat these as practical observations, not a universal lens rule.

Bright sources in or near the frame can make the fabric’s effect on highlights more noticeable, while softer or dimmer light may produce a subtler result. Try a few frames with the same composition and change only one variable—tension, color, lens, or light—so you can see what each one contributes.

Check exposure and focus in your test shots
Adding fabric in front of the lens can reduce the light reaching it. The related Digital Camera World tutorial reports a loss of one-third to one-half stop for its particular netted-lens setup; that figure is not a universal specification for pantyhose. Check your camera’s meter and review the histogram or image preview, then adjust exposure if needed.
Inspect fine details as well as highlights: the fabric can soften the image, but visible weave or folds may distract from the subject. If autofocus struggles through the material, focus without it and then add the diffuser, or use manual focus and verify sharpness with magnified playback.

When a camera diffusion filter makes more sense
A commercial diffusion or mist filter is an optional alternative when you want a reusable, more controlled effect. It can soften detail, bloom highlights, and lower contrast, but it will not necessarily reproduce hosiery’s irregular texture or color cast. Choose the effect strength and character you want, and make sure the filter’s diameter matches the lens. Digital Camera World’s diffusion-filter guide discusses options including Tiffen, Kenko, and PolarPro; check current availability and compatibility before buying.
