Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
To make a Lifesteal Minecraft server, install a compatible Java runtime, run a Minecraft: Java Edition server (preferably Paper), add a Lifesteal plugin to the server’s plugins folder, configure its heart and elimination rules, and then test privately before giving players the address. Lifesteal is not a separate official Minecraft server download; it is ordinary Java Edition server software plus a gameplay plugin.
The exact experience depends on the plugin you choose. “Lifesteal” can mean different starting hearts, kill rewards, death penalties, revival items, and elimination behavior, so match the plugin to your exact Minecraft and Paper version and read its generated configuration before inviting anyone.

Prepare these items before downloading anything:
- A legal copy of Minecraft: Java Edition for every player who will join.
- A computer or hosted server that can run the Minecraft version you selected.
- A Java runtime compatible with that Minecraft version.
- The official Java Edition server JAR, or a Paper server JAR for a plugin-capable setup.
- A Lifesteal plugin release that explicitly supports your Minecraft and Paper build.
- Administrative access to the server folder and, for home hosting, to your router.
Keep the server in a dedicated folder rather than mixing it with your client installation. This makes backups, upgrades, plugin removal, and recovery much safer. The amount of memory available to the server affects the launch settings; as Mojang’s setup guidance notes, adjust the allocation to the RAM you have dedicated to the server rather than copying a value blindly.
Choose the server implementation
Vanilla Java server
The official server JAR is the simplest baseline. Download it from Minecraft’s official Java server page, place it in the dedicated folder, run it once, accept the EULA after reading it, and edit server.properties. A vanilla server can run the game, but it does not provide the usual Bukkit- or Spigot-compatible plugin environment needed by most Lifesteal plugins.
#1 Best Overall
Paper
Paper is a Minecraft: Java Edition server implementation designed to improve performance and provide more advanced features and an API. It is the practical choice when your Lifesteal design depends on plugins, permissions, administrative commands, or additional server tools.
Download the Paper build that corresponds to the same Minecraft version you intend to run. Do not choose a plugin first and then assume any Paper build will work: check the plugin’s supported versions, then select a matching server build. A plugin compiled for a different Minecraft release may fail to load, behave incorrectly, or prevent the server from starting.

- Install a Java runtime supported by your chosen Minecraft version. Use the runtime’s 64-bit build when the operating system and server hardware support it.
- Create a folder with a short path, such as
Minecraft-Lifesteal. Avoid protected operating-system directories and cloud-synchronized folders that can lock files while the server is running. - Download the official Minecraft server JAR or the matching Paper JAR into that folder. Rename it to a clear filename such as
paper.jaronly if your launch command uses that exact name. - Open a terminal or command prompt in the folder and start the JAR once. A typical Paper launch command is
java -Xms[initial-memory] -Xmx[max-memory] -jar paper.jar --nogui. Replace the bracketed values with allocations appropriate for your machine; they are not universal recommendations. - Stop the process after it creates the initial files. On Windows, a simple batch file can hold the same command; on Linux or macOS, place it in a shell script and make that script executable.
The first run normally creates files including eula.txt, server.properties, a world directory, and (for Paper) plugin-related directories. Do not copy a world or plugin configuration into the folder until the server has completed this first initialization.
Accept the EULA and set basic properties
- Open
eula.txtand read the license terms. - If you agree, change the setting to
eula=true, save the file, and start the server again. - Open
server.propertiesin a plain-text editor while the server is stopped. - Set a recognizable
motd, choose the desiredgamemodeanddifficulty, and decide whetheronline-modeshould remain enabled. For an ordinary public Java server, leaving authentication enabled is the safer default. - Review
server-port. Mojang’s setup guide identifies 25565 as the default connection/query port; if you change it, players and any router rule must use the new value. - Save the file and start the server. Watch the console for a message indicating that it has finished loading before attempting to connect.
Give yourself operator permission from the server console with op YourMinecraftName, replacing the name with your in-game account. Use operator privileges for setup, not as a substitute for plugin permissions that regular staff should receive.
Install a Lifesteal plugin on Paper
Check compatibility before downloading
Read the plugin listing’s supported Minecraft and Paper versions, last-update information, required dependencies, configuration instructions, and command list. The LifeSteal 1.0.2 listing cited for this setup describes a Spigot/Paper plugin with heart-based combat, eliminations, revive mechanics, and custom items; it was updated on July 3, 2026. That version date does not make it compatible with every current server version, so verify the listed range against your own build.
A separate Spigot listing describes a different ruleset: lives are gained from kills, player deaths remove health, hearts can be crafted, and elimination sends a player to spectator mode by default. These are examples of why the word “Lifesteal” does not define one universal ruleset.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Copy the JAR and generate its files
- Stop the Paper server cleanly with the console command
stop. - Place the downloaded plugin JAR directly in the server’s
pluginsfolder. Do not unzip it unless the plugin’s own instructions explicitly require that. - Start the server and watch the console for the plugin’s enable message. If Paper reports an incompatible API, missing dependency, or load failure, stop and install a release that supports your exact server version rather than forcing it.
- After the first successful start, stop the server once more and inspect the new plugin folder. Back up the generated files before making substantial changes.
- For the cited LifeSteal 1.0.2 listing, run
/lssetupin game or from the console as directed by that plugin. Follow the prompts or generated configuration; do not assume another Lifesteal plugin uses the same command.
Paper’s basic plugin workflow is deliberately simple: put the plugin JAR in plugins, restart, and configure the files the plugin creates. Avoid replacing a running JAR or editing configuration while the server is active, because some changes will be overwritten or only partially loaded.
Understand the rules you are configuring
Before opening the server to friends, write down the rules in plain language. Players need to know exactly what a kill earns, what a death costs, and how an eliminated player can return.

| Rule area | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Starting and maximum hearts or lives | How many does a new player receive? Is there a cap? | Determines early-game balance and prevents unlimited farming. |
| Kill reward | Does the killer gain a heart, a life, an item, or nothing in special cases? | Defines the central risk-and-reward loop. |
| Player-death penalty | Does the dead player lose a heart, a life, or an item? | Controls how quickly players approach elimination. |
| Natural and environmental deaths | Do fall, fire, mobs, commands, or disconnects count? | Prevents disputes over deaths that were not player kills. |
| Elimination threshold | At zero hearts or lives, is the player banned, put in spectator mode, or otherwise restricted? | Sets the consequence that makes the mode different from ordinary survival. |
| Revival | Can another player revive someone? Which item, recipe, permission, or command is required? | Gives eliminated players a defined route back into the server. |
| Items and recipes | Are heart items craftable, dropped, consumed, or protected from loss? | Changes the economy and the value of exploration. |
| Commands and permissions | Which commands are available to players, moderators, and the console? | Prevents ordinary players from using administrative controls. |
| Reset and data storage | Where are player lives stored, and how do you reset a season? | Makes troubleshooting and future seasons recoverable. |
Use the plugin’s configuration comments and documentation as the authority for option names. If a setting is not documented, test it in a copy of the world instead of guessing what a similarly named option does.
Configure and test a private season
Build a test plan
Keep the server on a whitelist while you test. Create two test accounts or invite only people you trust, then check every event that can alter hearts or lives. Record the result after each test so a later configuration change cannot be confused with a plugin bug.
- Join with a new player and verify the starting value.
- Kill a player in a controlled area and confirm the killer reward and victim penalty.
- Repeat the test when the killer is at the maximum and when the victim is at the minimum.
- Test a natural death, such as fall or fire, if your rules distinguish it from a PvP death.
- Use the configured heart item and any custom recipe. Confirm whether the item is consumed, dropped, or protected.
- Reach the elimination threshold in a disposable test world. Check spectator, ban, or other restrictions and verify that revival works as documented.
- Disconnect during combat, restart the server, and confirm that stored values persist.
- Try every staff command with a non-operator account to verify permissions.
Protect the starting world
Make a full copy of the server folder while it is stopped, including the world, plugins, and plugin data. Keep an untouched pre-season backup and a separate backup after testing. If a rule change damages player data, stop the server, preserve the faulty copy for diagnosis, and restore the known-good backup rather than repeatedly editing live files.
Let friends connect from outside your home
Find the correct local address
Players on the same home network can usually connect using the host computer’s private address. Players elsewhere need the public address of the network and the port configured in server.properties. Give friends the address only after the server is running and the firewall rule is in place.

- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.

Forward the port
- Assign the host computer a stable private address, preferably with a DHCP reservation in the router.
- Create a port-forwarding rule for the server port, using the correct transport protocol and the host computer’s private address. Router menus vary by manufacturer, so the labels may be “Port Forwarding,” “Virtual Server,” or similar.
- Allow the Java server process through the operating system firewall, limiting the rule to the required network profile and port.
- Start Paper and test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot. Testing only from inside the same home network can produce a false success because some routers do not support loopback connections.
Mojang’s guide warns that exposing a home public IP creates security risk. Keep the server software updated, use a whitelist, give operator status sparingly, avoid sharing the address publicly, and turn the server off when it is not needed. Port forwarding does not provide protection against abuse; it merely makes the service reachable.

When home hosting is the wrong fit
Managed Minecraft hosting is a convenience option if you need 24/7 availability, public access without router administration, backups, or resources that can scale beyond a home computer. Check the provider’s supported Minecraft and Paper versions, plugin policy, backup schedule, server geography, pricing, and uptime terms before committing. You still need to verify that the host permits the Lifesteal plugin and gives you access to its files and console.

“Unable to access jarfile” or Java is not recognized
The launch command is pointing to the wrong filename or Java is missing from the system path. Run the command from the server folder, confirm the JAR’s exact name, and check Java with java -version. Install a runtime compatible with the Minecraft release rather than changing the command to hide a version mismatch.
The server stops at the EULA message
The file still contains eula=false, or it was edited in a different folder than the one used by the launch command. Stop the process, open the generated eula.txt beside the server JAR, and change the value only if you accept the terms.
Best Value
The plugin does not appear in /plugins
Confirm that the JAR is directly inside plugins, not in a nested folder, and inspect the console for a dependency, Java, or API error. A plugin built for another Minecraft/Paper version is the most important compatibility check. Remove or replace the incompatible release and restart; do not repeatedly reload a broken plugin on a live world.
/lssetup is unknown
/lssetup is associated with the cited LifeSteal 1.0.2 listing, not with every Lifesteal plugin. Check the installed plugin’s own command list and confirm that the intended JAR is the one Paper enabled.
Hearts change unexpectedly
Review settings for environmental deaths, commands, combat logging, maximum values, and whether an item represents a temporary or permanent change. Reproduce the event in the test world and inspect the plugin log before changing multiple settings at once.
Players cannot connect
Check that Paper is fully started, the player is using Java Edition and the same Minecraft version, and the address includes the correct port when it is not the default. For remote players, verify the router forward, firewall rule, host’s private address, and public address from an external network.
A player is eliminated but cannot be revived
Confirm the configured threshold, spectator or ban behavior, revival item recipe, and permission node. Test revival with a moderator account and a fresh test player. If the plugin stores elimination data separately, restore the backup only while the server is stopped.

Operate the server after launch
- Announce the heart/life rules, elimination behavior, revival process, and reset policy before the first season.
- Keep the whitelist enabled until moderation procedures are ready.
- Back up the world and plugin data on a schedule and before every plugin or Paper update.
- Update Paper and the Lifesteal plugin only after checking version compatibility and testing a copy.
- Keep a changelog of configuration edits so players can see when a rule changed.
- Review console logs for repeated errors, failed commands, or unexpected restarts.
- Use separate staff permissions where the plugin supports them instead of giving every moderator full operator access.
- Plan a season reset by documenting which worlds, player data, inventories, and plugin files will be retained or deleted.
What a good Lifesteal setup looks like
A dependable setup has three matching pieces: a Java runtime and server build that support the chosen Minecraft release, a Lifesteal plugin release built for that same environment, and a written ruleset tested in a private world. Paper supplies the plugin-capable server layer; the Lifesteal plugin supplies hearts, lives, eliminations, revival mechanics, custom items, commands, and data storage. Networking and backups then determine whether friends can join safely and whether a mistake can be reversed.
If you remember only the essentials, use Paper for the plugin workflow, place the compatible plugin JAR in plugins, restart before configuring it, treat commands such as /lssetup as plugin-specific, test every death and revival path, and do not expose a home server until port forwarding, firewall rules, backups, and player access controls are ready.
