Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
You can make a Hunger Games Minecraft server by running a Java Edition server, adding a Hunger Games rules layer (a Paper plugin, datapack, or command system), building an arena, and testing the complete round-and-reset cycle. Mojang’s documented self-hosting setup is for Java Edition only; the official page states, “Please note: This server setup is only compatible with Minecraft: Java Edition.” Download the Java server, then keep the client, server JAR, Java runtime, Paper build, and game-mode project on compatible versions.
The steps below cover a small private server first, then explain how to let people outside your home network connect safely. Exact Hunger Games commands differ by the plugin or datapack you select, so use a project that explicitly supports your Minecraft and Paper versions and follow its own command reference.

Decide what kind of server you are building
A Hunger Games server is not a special Mojang server type. It is a normal Minecraft server plus a rules layer that controls the match. That layer must create or select an arena, place players at starting points, run a countdown, manage loot and PvP, handle deaths and spectators, determine the winner, and restore the arena for another round.
Check the edition and version first
The official self-hosting instructions at Minecraft Server Download: Host Your Own World apply to Java Edition. Bedrock clients cannot join this Java server by default. Write down the exact Minecraft version you intend to run before downloading anything. Then select a matching Java runtime, server JAR, Paper build (if you use Paper), and Hunger Games plugin or datapack. A mismatch is the most common reason an otherwise correct installation fails.

Choose between vanilla and Paper
| Option | Best for | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vanilla server with commands or a datapack | A lightweight map or a rules system you are comfortable editing | No plugin platform to maintain; works with command blocks and datapacks | Advanced kits, spectators, borders, statistics, and automatic resets may require more manual command work; documentation quality depends on the datapack |
| Paper with a Hunger Games plugin | Repeatable public or private matches with administration tools | Plugin permissions, event handling, configurable arenas, and a larger ecosystem | You must match the Paper and plugin versions and maintain another software component |
Paper describes itself as “a drop-in replacement for both CraftBukkit and Spigot,” so existing server administrators generally do not need to redesign their server when moving to Paper. Read the current Java and Minecraft requirements in Paper’s Getting started documentation before choosing a build.
Install the Java server
1. Create a dedicated server folder
Create a new folder that will contain only this server. A dedicated folder keeps worlds, logs, configuration, and backups together and prevents you from accidentally launching the wrong JAR. Give the folder a simple name such as hunger-games-server. You need permission to install Java and write files in this location.
2. Install Java and download the official JAR
Install a Java runtime compatible with the Minecraft version you selected. Mojang’s setup requires Java to launch the server JAR. Download the official server file from minecraft.net/en-us/download/server and save it in the dedicated folder. Rename the file to server.jar so your launch command remains stable when you update the server.
3. Run the JAR once
Open a terminal or command prompt in the server folder and run:
java -jar server.jar nogui
The first run creates the files needed for configuration, including eula.txt and server.properties. The server will stop or refuse to continue until the license agreement is accepted. If the command reports that Java is not recognized, install Java or add its executable to your operating system’s PATH, then run the command again.
4. Accept the EULA
Open eula.txt in a text editor, change eula=false to eula=true, save the file, and start the server again. Minecraft Help gives the same required action: “Here you will need to set the eula=false to eula=true and save.” Do not change the value unless you have read and accepted Mojang’s agreement. The detailed procedure is in How to Setup a Minecraft: Java Edition Server.

Once the first run works, create a small start script in the server folder so every launch uses the same command. For Windows, a file named start.bat can contain:

- ULTIMATE COLLECTION — Includes Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition, five Bedrock add-ons, five exclusive Character Creator items, and 1000 Minecoins.
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that’s unique in every playthrough.

java -jar server.jar nogui
pause
On macOS or Linux, a shell script can contain the same Java line. Keep the terminal or console open while testing; it displays startup errors, plugin loading messages, and player connection events. Stop the server with the console command stop rather than closing the window, which gives the world time to save.
Configure the core server settings
Stop the server before editing configuration files. Make a copy of the entire server folder, or at minimum the world folders, server.properties, whitelist files, and plugin or datapack configuration. The official setup identifies server.properties as the central configuration file.
Important properties for a Hunger Games server
| Setting | What to decide | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
level-name |
The world folder used for the match | Use a dedicated arena world or a clearly named world so ordinary building and match resets do not interfere with each other. |
gamemode |
The default mode for players who join outside a match | Set a lobby-friendly mode, then let the Hunger Games system change participants to survival when a round starts. |
difficulty |
The world difficulty | Choose deliberately because hostile mobs, hunger, and environmental danger can change the balance of a match. |
max-players |
The largest number of simultaneous players | Set it to the number your arena, loot, and hardware can support; do not advertise more slots than you have tested. |
motd |
The message shown in the server list | State the server name, version, and whether a match is running. |
white-list |
Whether only approved accounts may join | Enable it during development and private testing. Add players through the console before inviting them. |
Property names and available options can change between Minecraft releases, so check the comments in the generated file for your version. Change one group of settings at a time, restart, and verify the result before adding the next feature.

Add the Hunger Games rules layer
Find a compatible project
Select a maintained Hunger Games plugin or datapack that explicitly lists your Minecraft version and, for a plugin, your Paper build family. Look for documentation covering arena creation, spawn assignment, countdowns, grace periods, loot or kits, borders, death handling, spectators, victory detection, and automatic reset. If a project does not document how an arena is restored, plan to reset it yourself or choose a different project before building a large map.
The exact project and commands are not interchangeable. Do not paste commands from a guide written for another plugin; command names, permission nodes, configuration paths, and reset mechanisms vary.
Install a Paper plugin
- Stop the server with
stopand wait for the console to confirm that it has shut down. - Confirm that the downloaded plugin JAR supports your Minecraft and Paper versions.
- Copy the JAR into the server’s
pluginsfolder. If the folder does not exist, start Paper once and stop it cleanly so Paper can create it. - Start the server and read the console. A successful load normally identifies the plugin and its version; a stack trace, disabled-plugin message, or dependency warning means you must fix compatibility before creating an arena.
- Stop the server once more, open the plugin’s generated configuration, and make a backup before changing values.
Paper’s startup and Java guidance is maintained at docs.papermc.io/paper/getting-started. Keep the plugin JAR, its configuration directory, and the server version in your maintenance notes.
Install a vanilla datapack
- Stop the server and identify the world that will host the match.
- Copy the datapack into that world’s
datapacksfolder, following the project’s directory structure exactly. - Start the server and use the project’s documented reload or verification procedure.
- Check the console for function errors and test every documented setup function before inviting players.
A datapack may rely on a particular world-generation setting or command behavior. Keep its release notes with your server backup and do not update Minecraft until you have confirmed that the datapack still works.

Build an arena that supports fair rounds
Create the lobby and boundaries
Separate the lobby from the playable area. Players should be able to join, read the rules, and wait for the next match without entering the arena early. Mark the arena boundary visibly and configure the game’s border or playable zone if your rules layer supports one. A border that closes too quickly can eliminate players before they find equipment; one that never closes can produce long, inactive rounds.
Place starting points
Use a central starting area only if the design intentionally creates an immediate scramble. Otherwise, distribute spawn points around the arena so players have multiple opening routes. Keep each point clear of blocks, lava, suffocation hazards, and direct line-of-sight attacks. Test every spawn with an operator account in the same game mode players will use.
Design routes and defensible locations
Give players several ways to move between the center and the outer edges. Include cover, elevation changes, and a few defensible areas, but avoid a position that can be sealed permanently with a handful of blocks. Check that a player can leave every spawn without needing a rare item or a specific parkour jump.
Balance chests, kits, and resources
Decide whether the round starts with empty inventories, fixed kits, or loot in chests. Place enough useful equipment for the intended player count and distribute it so a single chest does not decide the match. Record every chest location or kit definition in the project’s configuration. If the system supports refills, test the timing and verify that a refill cannot occur after the winner has been declared.

Before opening the server, write down what should happen in each state. This prevents a visually attractive arena from becoming an unplayable game.
- Waiting: Players remain in the lobby; the whitelist and minimum-player rule are enforced.
- Countdown: Participants are selected, teleported to valid spawns, inventories are cleared or kits are applied, and movement or PvP is restricted as intended.
- Grace period: Players may explore, but the rules layer delays combat if that is part of your design. Confirm that the timer is visible and that damage is actually blocked.
- Active match: PvP, loot, border movement, hunger, and environmental rules operate normally. Verify that players cannot leave the arena through portals, unloaded chunks, or gaps in the border.
- Elimination: A dead player is removed from combat and placed in spectator mode or the lobby. Check that eliminated players cannot relay privileged information if your rules prohibit it.
- Victory: The system identifies the final surviving player or team, announces the result, and stops further damage and loot changes.
- Reset: The arena, chests, entities, inventories, scoreboards, border, and player locations return to their pre-match state. The lobby then accepts the next group.
If your selected project does not automate one of these states, document the manual command or administrative action needed for it. A reset that depends on remembering six commands is a warning sign for a server intended for frequent public play.
Test before inviting friends
Run an operator-only rehearsal
Use operator accounts first and keep the whitelist enabled. Test with enough accounts to expose spawn and loot problems, even if that means using fewer players than your planned capacity. Follow the sequence without skipping steps:

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
- Join the lobby and verify the welcome message and permitted game mode.
- Start a countdown and confirm that every participant reaches a unique, safe spawn.
- Open or refill chests and check that items appear where expected.
- Wait for the grace period to end, then confirm that PvP becomes active.
- Eliminate a player and verify spectator or lobby handling.
- Finish the match, confirm the winner announcement, and inspect every player inventory.
- Reset the arena and immediately start a second round to catch leftover blocks, entities, scores, or border settings.
Keep a test log
Record the server version, Java version, Paper build, plugin or datapack version, configuration changes, and the backup used for each rehearsal. Note the exact symptom and console line when something fails. This turns a vague report such as “the arena broke” into a reproducible fix.
Let friends join your server
Players on the same home network
For a local test, have players connect using the host computer’s private network address and the server port shown in your configuration. Keep the whitelist enabled while you verify that each invited account can join, move, fight, spectate, and reconnect.
Players outside your network
Remote access usually requires both an operating-system firewall rule and router port forwarding. Mojang warns that home-network setup is involved; see the instructions at Minecraft Help and the official server page. The router forwards the Minecraft port to the computer running the server, while the firewall permits the same traffic. The exact screens differ by router and operating system.
- Give the server computer a stable private address on your home network so the router rule does not point to a changing device.
- Create a firewall rule that allows the server process or the configured Minecraft port.
- Forward that port in the router to the server computer’s private address.
- Keep the whitelist on and test from outside your home network, such as through a friend’s connection.
- Remove temporary test rules and stop the server when it is not in use.
Do not publish an unprotected address while the server is still being configured. A whitelist limits who can join, but it does not replace strong operating-system security, current software, backups, or careful log monitoring.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting gives you direct control, but you are responsible for Java, uptime, backups, router settings, firewall rules, updates, and recovery. A managed Minecraft host can take over some of that work. Compare the two approaches before committing to a public schedule.
| Concern | Self-hosted at home | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | No hosting invoice, but you provide the computer, electricity, and internet connection. | A recurring plan cost; verify the actual price, renewal terms, and included resources before purchase. |
| Player capacity | Limited by your machine, upload bandwidth, world size, and tested configuration. | Depends on the plan’s CPU, RAM, storage, and slot policy. |
| Backups | You must schedule, store, and test your own copies. | Some services offer backups; confirm frequency, retention, and whether you can download them. |
| Plugins and datapacks | Full file and console access, subject to your own maintenance. | Check supported server software, upload limits, and whether custom plugins are allowed. |
| Latency | Usually best for nearby friends; depends on your home upload connection. | Choose a region near most players and verify the provider’s network policy. |
| Administration | You manage Java, Paper, updates, logs, firewall, and router forwarding. | The host may provide a panel and console, but you still manage game rules and compatibility. |
For a small private group, self-hosting is practical when you are comfortable with network configuration and can leave the computer online. Choose managed hosting when uptime, remote access, and automated infrastructure matter more than keeping every system task under your control. No provider is automatically approved by this guide; evaluate current terms and support for the exact Minecraft version you plan to run.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The server exits immediately
Read the first error in the console rather than the final shutdown line. Confirm that Java is installed, that the Java version matches the server release, that you launched the intended JAR from the correct folder, and that the file was not renamed with a second extension such as server.jar.jar. If the error mentions the EULA, reopen eula.txt and verify the saved value is eula=true.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Paper starts but the Hunger Games plugin is disabled
Check the plugin’s stated Minecraft and Paper compatibility, required dependencies, and configuration syntax. Remove only the incompatible plugin, not the world, and restart to confirm the base server works. Restore the plugin after correcting the version or dependency. Keep the console log with your version notes so an update does not recreate the same failure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPlayers cannot connect
First test on the host computer, then from another device on the same network, and only then from outside the network. A local failure points to the server process, address, port, or firewall. A local success but remote failure usually indicates router forwarding, a changing private address, an ISP restriction, or an incorrect public address. Recheck each layer separately and keep the whitelist enabled.
The arena resets incorrectly
Run a second match immediately after a reset and inspect chests, blocks, dropped items, entities, inventories, scoreboards, border size, and player locations. If one element remains changed, identify whether the project’s reset function covers it or whether a manual reset is required. Do not advertise automatic rounds until two consecutive resets pass your checklist.
Performance degrades during a match
Reduce unneeded entities and redstone activity in the arena, avoid loading a huge area when a smaller map will do, and check the console for repeated errors. Test the intended player count before opening the server publicly. If the same world performs well locally but poorly for remote players, investigate upload bandwidth and network latency separately from server tick performance.
Maintain versions and backups
Keep a simple change record containing the Minecraft version, Java version, server type, Paper build, Hunger Games plugin or datapack release, configuration edits, and backup location. Before any update:
- Stop the server cleanly and make a dated backup of worlds and configuration.
- Read the release notes for the server software and every plugin or datapack.
- Update one component at a time on a copy of the server.
- Start the copy, inspect the console, and run a complete match and reset.
- Only then update the live server, keeping the previous files available for rollback.
A backup is useful only if it can be restored. Periodically create a test copy, restore the backup into it, and verify that the lobby, arena, rules layer, whitelist, and reset process still work.
Quick Recap
Launch checklist
- Java Edition client and server versions match.
- Java is installed and the server JAR launches from the dedicated folder.
eula.txtcontains the accepted value and the server starts normally.server.propertieshas been backed up and configured for the intended world, mode, difficulty, player limit, message, and whitelist.- Paper or vanilla was chosen deliberately, and every plugin or datapack supports the selected version.
- The arena has safe spawns, multiple routes, balanced loot, a visible boundary, and a lobby.
- Countdown, grace period, PvP, death handling, spectators, victory, and reset have each been tested.
- Local connections work before remote access is attempted.
- Firewall and router rules are limited to what the server needs, and the whitelist remains enabled during testing.
- A dated backup and version record exist before the first public round.
