The most effective way to reduce ember risk is to treat the house as a system: remove material that can burn, keep roofs and gutters clean, close gaps, fit suitable corrosion-resistant metal screens, and make larger building changes to the property’s Bushfire Attack Level (BAL). These measures reduce the chance that embers ignite the structure or enter its cavities, but they cannot make a home fireproof or guarantee survival.

Embers can arrive before the flame front, travel long distances in strong winds, and continue landing after the front has passed. A home that looks safe from direct flames can still be ignited by leaves in a gutter, mulch against a wall, or an ember entering through a vent or poorly sealed door.

Why ember attack is such a serious threat

Ember attack is the most common cause of building damage or destruction from bushfires, according to the Australian Government’s YourHome guidance. That page says around 80% of houses lost can be attributed to ember attack alone or combined with other bushfire mechanisms. The figure is not an individual-house probability and the page does not show a publication year, so it should be treated as a broad historical observation rather than a prediction for your property.

The Queensland Fire Department warns that fire embers can travel kilometres during a bushfire, putting a property at risk long before flames reach the house. Windborne embers exploit small weaknesses: torn insect screens, gaps beneath doors, open roof penetrations, cracked tiles, vents, weepholes, eaves, wall joints and accumulated debris. Once inside, they can smoulder unseen in roof spaces, wall cavities, subfloors or gutters.

That makes ember preparation different from simply clearing a wide firebreak. You need both a low-fuel site and a building envelope that gives embers as few entry routes as possible.

Start with a pre-season inspection

Carry out a methodical walk-around before the bushfire season and repeat it after severe winds, storms or nearby fire activity. Use a ladder only when it is safe, and hire a qualified trade for steep, fragile or high roofs.

  1. Inspect the roof surface. Look for cracked, slipped or missing tiles, damaged metal sheets, deteriorated ridge caps and loose flashing. Repair defects so embers cannot reach the roof space through openings.
  2. Clean roof valleys and gutters. Remove leaves, bark, twigs and other combustible material. Check downpipes and outlets for blockages while you are there.
  3. Check screens and frames. Look for holes, corrosion, loose fasteners, warped frames and screens that no longer close tightly against the opening.
  4. Test doors and windows. They should close fully, latch correctly and maintain an effective seal. Pay particular attention to gaps beneath external doors.
  5. Examine walls, eaves and penetrations. Look for cracks or openings around cladding, pipework, cables, air-conditioning units, skylights, chimneys and other roof penetrations.
  6. Inspect underfloor areas. Remove stored combustible items and check vents, lattice, access doors and gaps where an ember could enter.
  7. Walk the immediate site. Remove dry leaves, bark, rubbish, timber offcuts, outdoor furniture cushions and other loose fuels close to the building. Check that vegetation is maintained and does not form a continuous fuel path to walls or rooflines.
  8. Review emergency equipment. If your household intends to defend the property, check water supplies, hoses, pumps, batteries, torches and protective clothing. Property defence is not a substitute for a documented evacuation decision and an early-departure plan.

Block the routes embers use to enter

Windows and external doors

Fit tightly closing metal screens to windows and doors where the applicable BAL and building requirements call for them. Queensland Fire Department guidance recommends steel wire mesh screens on windows and doors; NSW Government advice also recommends fine metal mesh screens. Repair or replace torn mesh and ensure frames remain fixed to the surrounding wall.

Check door thresholds, jambs and sliding-door tracks. A screen does not compensate for a large gap under the door or a door that cannot latch. Weather seals should be intact, firmly attached and compatible with the door’s operation.

Vents, weepholes and service openings

Roof, wall and subfloor vents can be direct ember pathways. Screen them with an approved metal product without blocking the ventilation or drainage function they provide. Weepholes must continue to drain moisture; do not fill them with improvised sealant or material that could trap water in the wall.

Inspect openings around pipes, electrical conduits, cables, evaporative coolers, air-conditioners and exhaust ducts. The correct treatment depends on the opening, its location and the property’s BAL, so use a suitably qualified installer when the detail is uncertain.

Eaves, roof edges and cavities

Look from ground level and inside the roof space for daylight around eaves, fascia boards, ridge caps, roof penetrations and ceiling services. Seal appropriate gaps with materials compatible with the roof and wall system. Do not close a designed drainage or ventilation path without understanding its purpose.

What the 2 mm screen guidance means

YourHome and Country Fire Authority (CFA) guidance describe corrosion-resistant aluminium, bronze or steel flyscreen material for applicable situations. CFA specifies a maximum 2 mm aperture for the screens it describes, and YourHome refers to gaps under 2 mm in its ember-protection advice. These dimensions must not be applied automatically to every opening or component: the relevant BAL, building element and standard determine the requirement. Plastic or fibreglass insect mesh is not the metal screening described in that guidance.

Location Practical treatment Important qualification
Windows and doors Use close-fitting corrosion-resistant metal screens; repair frames, latches and seals. Confirm the aperture and material required for the opening’s BAL classification.
Vents and weepholes Install suitable steel or other approved metal mesh while preserving airflow and drainage. Do not block a moisture-management opening or assume a window-screen product is suitable.
Roof penetrations and eaves Repair gaps, damaged flashing and loose roof details; screen or seal where specified. Use a qualified installer for non-standard details and high-risk roof work.
Underfloor openings Remove stored fuel and protect vents and access doors with compliant metal screening. Requirements vary with construction type, slope, vegetation and BAL.

Keep roofs and gutters from becoming ignition points

Leaves and bark in a gutter can ignite even when the roof itself is non-combustible. Clean gutters, box gutters, valleys, downpipes and roof edges before fire season and whenever wind deposits new debris. A suitable metal gutter guard can reduce the amount of material entering a gutter, but it does not remove the need for inspection and cleaning. Fine debris can accumulate on top of or beneath a guard, and some guards can complicate access for maintenance.

Inspect roof penetrations, skylights, chimneys, evaporative-cooler housings and ridge details. Replace damaged seals and flashing, and repair cracked tiles or corroded sheets. Keep combustible materials away from roof edges and do not store ladders, timber or garden waste where an ember can ignite them against the fascia.

Reduce combustible fuel around the building

Ember control begins outside the walls. Remove loose leaves, grass clippings, twigs, bark, cardboard, packaging and rubbish from around the house. Do not allow mulch, firewood, stored building materials or gas-cylinder enclosures to sit directly against combustible walls or beneath windows and vents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintain vegetation so that dry branches and dense foliage are not touching the building or creating a continuous path toward it. Prune dead material, keep grass managed and separate larger fuel sources from the house where the site allows. Local vegetation, slope, access and planning rules affect what is practical; follow local fire-service guidance rather than applying a single clearance distance everywhere.

Use BAL to guide construction and major retrofits

Bushfire Attack Level is site-specific. The assessment considers factors such as the type and density of surrounding vegetation, slope and distance from vegetation. The resulting BAL guides requirements for construction elements including roofs, windows, doors, vents, walls, decks and subfloors.

Before replacing windows, changing a roof system, enclosing a subfloor, adding shutters or undertaking another major retrofit, consult a suitably qualified bushfire practitioner and the relevant local authority. Ask for the assessment and the construction details in writing so the installer knows which elements must comply. Australian Government guidance references AS 3959:2018, but the standard’s full text and any state or territory variations should be checked through the applicable authority; a generic product listing is not proof of compliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A BAL assessment is especially important when an apparently small change alters the building envelope. For example, a new skylight, extension, deck, carport or ventilation system can introduce openings or combustible surfaces that were not present in the original design.

A practical order of work

When time or money is limited, work through the property in a logical sequence rather than buying isolated products. First remove combustible debris from gutters, roof valleys, decks and around walls. Next repair obvious holes, cracked tiles, loose flashing, failed seals and doors that do not latch. Then address vents, weepholes, underfloor openings and window or door screens. Finally, plan larger work such as window replacement, shutters, roof changes or subfloor enclosure around a current BAL assessment.

This sequence deals with immediate ignition sources while ensuring that major purchases are not made for the wrong building element. There is no single national price for ember protection: costs depend on the number and size of openings, roof access, materials, labour, site conditions and the BAL-related specification. Obtain itemised quotes and ask what inspection, preparation and future maintenance are included rather than comparing a screen price alone.

Common mistakes that undermine ember protection

  • Installing ordinary insect mesh and assuming it is compliant. The guidance cited here refers to corrosion-resistant metal mesh in applicable situations; plastic or fibreglass mesh is not the same specification.
  • Putting a guard on a gutter and never checking it again. Debris can collect on top of or beneath a guard, so the gutter still needs access, inspection and cleaning.
  • Sealing every visible opening. Some openings provide essential ventilation or drainage. Blocking a weephole or vent can create moisture damage and may not provide compliant ember protection.
  • Ignoring small service penetrations. Pipes, cables, air-conditioners, exhausts and skylights can create less obvious routes into a roof or wall cavity.
  • Using a generic BAL claim from an online listing. Suitability depends on the product, opening, installation and site classification. Ask for evidence that matches your property.
  • Doing high-risk roof work without help. Falls and damage to fragile roofing can turn preparation into an emergency; use a qualified trade when access is unsafe.
  • Leaving loose outdoor items until the warning arrives. Bins, cushions, timber, mulch and garden waste can become ignition sources during the same winds that carry embers.

Questions to ask an installer or bushfire practitioner

Before approving work, provide the property address, existing plans and any BAL assessment. Ask which openings and surfaces the recommendation protects, the metal type and corrosion resistance, the maximum aperture where applicable, how frames will be fixed, and how ventilation and drainage will remain functional. Ask for the relevant compliance evidence and written installation details, including any state or territory requirements.

Also ask how screens, guards and seals will be inspected and cleaned, whether access panels must remain available, and what building work could invalidate the recommendation later. If the installer cannot explain how a product relates to the specific opening and BAL, pause and seek advice from a suitably qualified practitioner or local authority.

Compare ember-protection options by function, not marketing claims

No cited guidance provides a controlled statistic showing that one retrofit reduces risk by a specific percentage more than another. Compare each option against the pathway it addresses and the maintenance it creates.

Question Why it matters
Which hazard does it address? Separate ember entry, ignition of nearby debris, radiant heat and direct contact with vegetation. A measure aimed at one pathway may not solve another.
Does it match the property’s BAL? Construction requirements vary by site and building element. Confirm the classification before ordering components.
What are the material and aperture specifications? Check metal type, corrosion resistance, maximum opening size, frame strength and compatibility with the opening.
Who should install it? High or complex openings, roof work and non-standard details may require a qualified trade or bushfire practitioner.
How will it be maintained? Gutters and screens still need cleaning, inspection and repair. A product that is difficult to access may fail through neglect.
Does it preserve building performance? Ventilation, drainage, access, moisture control and normal door or window operation must continue after the retrofit.

If you are shopping for mesh, describe the requirement precisely—for example, corrosion-resistant stainless-steel or other approved metal ember mesh for a specified opening—rather than assuming any fine insect screen meets the applicable standard. Ask the installer to identify the product’s evidence of suitability for your BAL and location.

Set a maintenance rhythm

When Tasks
Before each fire season Complete the full roof, gutter, screen, seal, wall, eave, subfloor and garden inspection; repair defects and remove accumulated fuel.
After strong winds or storms Clear newly deposited leaves and branches, check screens and roof details, and look for damaged seals or displaced tiles.
During periods of elevated fire danger Remove loose outdoor items, confirm hoses and water supplies if property defence is planned, charge communications equipment and monitor official warnings.
After any nearby fire or ember fall Inspect gutters, roof valleys, vents, decks, wall junctions and concealed spaces for smouldering material. Call emergency services for an active fire.
After building work Verify that new penetrations, screens, cladding, windows and roof components match the approved BAL-related design.

Plan for evacuation and understand the limits

Building preparation lowers exposure, but bushfire behaviour depends on wind, fuel, terrain, fire intensity, maintenance and details that may be impossible to predict. Keep a written household plan with an early-departure trigger, destination, alternate routes, arrangements for children, older people, pets and livestock, and a way to receive emergency alerts. Follow instructions from emergency services and leave early when authorities advise it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If someone remains to defend a property, that decision requires appropriate training, protective equipment, reliable water and an assessment of whether the site can be safely defended. Never delay evacuation to perform last-minute cleaning or screen repairs. A resilient home is one prepared well before the fire arrives, not one improvised during the emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can embers reach my home before the fire front?

Yes. Queensland Fire Department guidance says embers can travel kilometres in bushfire winds. They may arrive long before flames and continue landing after the front has passed, so gutters, roof spaces, vents and nearby debris need attention even when direct flames are not visible.

Is a metal gutter guard enough to protect the house?

No. A suitable metal guard can reduce debris entering a gutter, but fine material can collect on or beneath it. Inspect and clean gutters, valleys and downpipes before fire season and after strong winds.

What mesh should I use for ember protection?

Use corrosion-resistant metal mesh—such as aluminium, bronze or steel—where the applicable BAL and building requirements call for it. CFA guidance describes a maximum 2 mm aperture for the screens it covers. Confirm the exact material and aperture for each opening; ordinary plastic or fibreglass insect mesh is not the same specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I screen vents and weepholes?

Potentially, but the treatment must preserve ventilation and drainage. Use a suitable approved metal product and avoid filling weepholes or vents with improvised sealant. A qualified installer can determine the correct detail for the opening and BAL.

How do I know which bushfire upgrades my house needs?

Obtain a site-specific Bushfire Attack Level assessment. Vegetation, slope and distance from vegetation affect the BAL, which then guides requirements for roofs, windows, doors, vents, walls, decks and subfloors. Consult a suitably qualified bushfire practitioner and the relevant local authority before major work.

Does meeting a construction standard guarantee that a house will survive?

No. Standards and maintenance lower risk but cannot guarantee survival in an unpredictable bushfire. Exposure, wind, fuel, fire intensity, building details and upkeep all matter, and emergency warnings and evacuation plans remain essential.

How often should I inspect an ember-resilient home?

Complete a full inspection before every fire season, then repeat checks after strong winds, storms, nearby fires and building work. Clear new debris, repair damaged screens or seals, and check roof details, gutters, vents, decks and concealed spaces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I ask before buying an ember screen online?

Ask whether the product is suitable for the specific opening and your BAL, what metal and corrosion resistance it uses, its aperture and frame details, how it will be fixed, and what evidence supports its suitability. A generic marketplace listing is not proof of compliance.

The Bottom Line

Reduce ember risk in layers: remove combustible debris, keep roofs and gutters clear, repair gaps and damaged screens, protect appropriate openings with corrosion-resistant metal mesh, and base major upgrades on a current BAL assessment. Maintain the work throughout the season, and always put official warnings and early evacuation ahead of last-minute property defence.
