Build the playlist around the event’s mood, clear every track for the platforms and formats you plan to use, then test the audio routing before viewers arrive. A music subscription or purchased song is not, by itself, permission to rebroadcast it. Keep music independently controllable from your microphone and game audio so you can lower it, stop it, or omit it from an archive when needed.
Plan a Halloween sound arc that fits the watch party
Think of the playlist as part of the event’s pacing, not as one long soundtrack. Sketch a few short sections that fit the games and the social flow:
- Arrival: eerie, low-key atmosphere while people join.
- Lobby or intermission: a little more energy while the group talks or changes games.
- Gameplay: restrained ambient sound, or no added music, when dialogue and game audio need room.
- Wind-down: a short closing stretch after the main event.
Keep each section in its own ordered list or playlist. Short blocks make it easier to move on when a game moment, conversation, or guest voice takes priority. Instrumental or low-lyric tracks may leave more room for conversation, but no genre is inherently cleared for streaming.

Clear the rights for every track and destination
Make a track-by-track rights checklist
For each recording, note its source or rights owner, the permission or license you rely on, and whether that permission covers live streaming, VODs, clips, and each platform where you plan to publish. The composition and the particular recording can have different rights holders, so verify the terms for the actual track and use.

- Do you own the necessary rights or have permission from the relevant rights holder?
- Does the permission cover live broadcasts as well as saved VODs and clips?
- Does it cover every destination you intend to use?
- Are there limits on commercial use, attribution, territory, or duration in the license?
Twitch says not to play recorded music unless you own all rights or have permission. Its guidance also cautions that buying a CD, vinyl record, or other physical media, or subscribing to a music service, typically does not give you the right to share that music on Twitch. A queue in a consumer streaming app is a listening playlist, not proof that rebroadcast is allowed. See Twitch’s music policy and its music-related copyright guidance.
Check game music separately
Do not assume that all sound coming from a game has the same rights status. A game’s original score, licensed popular music inside the game, and music you add from an external playlist may be subject to different terms. Twitch recommends checking the game’s EULA for how recorded in-game music may be used. Look for a stream-safe setting or separate music-volume control if the game offers one, then confirm the publisher’s instructions rather than assuming that the setting itself grants permission.

YouTube’s Content ID reference rules say original video-game soundtrack references are valid only when owned by the game’s publisher. That is a narrow rule about who may provide Content ID references, not blanket clearance for a creator’s livestream, VOD, or upload. Check the rights for your specific use and the current platform rules. YouTube’s Content ID eligibility guidance explains the distinction.
Treat music-library examples as leads, not guarantees
Twitch’s 2020 guidance names Soundstripe, Monstercat Gold, Chillhop, Epidemic Sound, and NCS as examples of library alternatives. Treat those names only as starting points for checking current terms: a service’s catalog, a particular track’s license, and coverage for each platform, VOD, clip, or commercial use may differ. The name of a library alone does not establish that a specific use is covered. Twitch’s guidance is the source for those examples.

Organize the playlist for easy control
Use separate, clearly named sections
Create ordered blocks such as “Arrival,” “Intermission,” and “Gameplay,” and put only tracks you have checked into each one. Keep a no-music scene or a verified alternative set ready. During tense gameplay or guest conversation, being able to stop or lower one music source is more useful than having to adjust a single mixed output.
Compare tracks on the factors that affect this event
- Rights: Who controls the recording and composition, and what permission applies?
- Destination and format: Are live streaming, VODs, clips, and each platform covered?
- Source: Is the sound an original score, licensed third-party game music, or an external playlist?
- Conversation fit: Does it support the mood while leaving space for the host and guests?
- Operational control: Can you start, stop, or lower it independently of the microphone and game?
- Archive routing: Have you verified where the music goes in the live feed and saved recording?
Route music separately and test before going live
Keep the music source independent in OBS
Where possible, add music as its own audio source rather than mixing it irreversibly with the microphone and game sound. In OBS, the Twitch VOD track feature can send a different audio feed to the saved Twitch VOD than to the live stream. Its guide shows how a music source can be included in the live feed but excluded from the VOD feed. This is an audio-routing option, not permission to broadcast music live. Make and listen to a test recording
- Open the OBS Audio Mixer and confirm that the microphone, game, and music appear on the intended sources.
- Play a representative section of the playlist while speaking and, if possible, playing the game. Watch the mixer meters and adjust levels so the music does not overwhelm speech or gameplay.
- Record a short sample using the audio routing you intend for the live stream and VOD.
- Listen to the recording. Check for unexpectedly loud music, missing sources, unwanted overlap, or music appearing in an archive feed where you did not intend it.
- Correct the source or track assignment, then make another test recording if you changed the routing.
OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide covers mixer controls and meters and recommends listening back to a recording before going live. Use the meters as operational cues rather than treating one volume number as right for every microphone, game, or room.

Twitch says its audio recognition system scans VODs and clips. If it detects copyrighted audio, a portion of a VOD may be muted and associated clips may be deleted. Twitch also says advance audio warnings are not copyright strikes. A warning or a VOD track setting does not replace checking whether you have permission for the music. Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- Music is much louder than voices: Lower the music source in the mixer, record another sample with someone speaking at normal volume, and listen back before the event.
- Music appears in the VOD when you meant to exclude it: Check the OBS track assignments and confirm the music source is not routed to the VOD track. Make and listen to a fresh recording; do not assume the setting worked without checking.
- Music is missing from the live stream or VOD: Verify that the intended source is active and assigned to the relevant track, then record a short test and listen to it.
- A game’s radio or licensed music is audible: Check the game’s EULA and publisher guidance, and look for a stream-safe option or separate music control. If you cannot establish permission, use the no-music fallback.
- You receive an audio warning or find muted VOD audio: Review the affected section and the track’s permissions. Twitch says its advance audio warnings are not copyright strikes, but detection behavior should not be treated as a rights check.
- You cannot verify a track’s coverage: Leave it out and use music whose permission you can confirm for the intended live and archived uses.
