Keep the audience-visible path local and deterministic. Put a bounded timeout and finite retry budget around every network call, prepare a clearly labelled cached or fixture-based fallback for read-only views, and show an honest failure state when an update cannot be confirmed. Rehearse venue Wi‑Fi loss, API timeouts, HTTP error responses and recovery before you present. A phone hotspot can replace broken venue Wi‑Fi when cellular service and the API are both available; it cannot repair an unavailable API.

Define what must still work

Reliability for a hackathon demo does not mean making every feature work during every outage. It means deciding which single audience-visible result must survive, then designing that path so it does not depend on an unbounded remote request. Examples include displaying a prepared result, completing a local interaction, or explaining an unavailable dependency without leaving the screen spinning.

Write that result down before changing code. Then classify every screen and action according to the dependency it needs and the truthfulness of the data it can show without a network.

  • Local and deterministic: UI transitions, validation, navigation and prepared demonstrations that run entirely on the device.
  • Read-only and cacheable: lists, profiles, reports or search results that can be served from a previously saved response or a representative fixture.
  • State-changing: create, update, delete, payment, login, booking or other commands whose success must be confirmed by the server.
  • Dependency explanation: an explicit message that identifies the unavailable service and tells the audience what the demo can and cannot show.

A fixture should resemble the real response closely enough to exercise the presentation path, but it must be labelled as simulated, prepared or stale. Never let a default object appear to be a newly completed server operation.

Map the failures your demo can encounter

Wi‑Fi loss and API failure are different incidents. A working local network does not prove that the upstream service is healthy, and a healthy API does not help if the laptop cannot reach the venue network. Model them separately so each has a deliberate outcome.

Failure What the user experiences Useful response
Venue Wi‑Fi unavailable Requests fail at the network layer or never receive a response. Use local data, an offline page, or a tested alternate network path.
Request timeout The dependency is too slow for the interaction. Stop waiting after the interaction timeout, then retry within a finite budget or enter fallback.
Transient transport fault A connection resets or briefly drops. Retry only when the operation is safe to repeat, with backoff.
HTTP 4xx or 5xx response The server responded, but reported an error. Handle the status explicitly; do not treat a successful fetch call as a successful business operation.
Persistent upstream outage Repeated calls continue to fail. Fail fast after the retry budget and use the prepared fallback or an honest error state.
Recovery after failure The dependency becomes available again. Probe in a controlled way, refresh data deliberately and tell the presenter when live mode has returned.

Google web.dev distinguishes a fetch-level network exception from an HTTP response carrying a 4xx or 5xx status. Your application must handle both. A disconnected browser may reject the fetch promise; a reachable server can instead return an error response that still resolves the promise.

Build a local presentation path

Separate presentation data from live transport

Keep the UI capable of receiving a data object from either the live client or a fixture provider. The screen should not know whether the object came from an API, Cache Storage or a local file; it should know the provenance so it can display an appropriate badge such as “Live,” “Cached 10 minutes ago” or “Demo data.” This separation lets you switch modes without rewriting the click path you plan to show.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose representative fixtures

Capture or author the minimum dataset needed for the story: the account, records, image, status and edge case that appear during your talk. Include enough variety to avoid an obviously empty mock, but remove secrets and personal data. Keep the fixture under version control with the demo and test the UI against it on the presentation machine.

Make offline mode an intentional state

Expose a small status indicator or banner when live data is unavailable. Explain that the displayed result is cached or simulated, and include a control to return to live mode when connectivity is restored. Do not silently substitute old values for current ones if freshness matters to the story.

Bound every network call

A network request is a dependency, not a guarantee. Without a timeout, a demo can remain on a spinner while the audience waits. Pick an interaction timeout appropriate to the action, then enforce it at the client boundary. The exact duration depends on your demo; there is no universal timeout that fits every dependency.

Use a finite retry budget

Retry can help with a transient fault, but each retry adds delay and traffic. Set a small maximum number of attempts and stop when the budget is exhausted. Retry only failures that may be transient and only when repeating the operation is safe. A read-only fetch is usually easier to repeat than a command that might have reached the server before the connection failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Back off between attempts

Do not send immediate repeated calls. Increase the delay between attempts, optionally adding jitter so several clients do not retry simultaneously. When the final attempt fails, transition to the prepared fallback or error state instead of starting another hidden loop.

Add a circuit breaker for persistent faults

Microsoft Learn’s Azure Architecture Center says, “The Circuit Breaker pattern serves a different purpose than the Retry pattern.” Retries give a transient problem another chance; a circuit breaker prevents repeated calls to a dependency that is continually failing. After a configured sequence of faults, the breaker opens and rejects calls quickly. After a delay, it permits a limited recovery probe. If that probe succeeds, normal calls resume; if it fails, the breaker remains open. Thresholds and delays must be chosen for your dependency, not copied as universal numbers.

Keep state-changing calls conservative

Never retry a non-idempotent command merely because the client did not receive a response. The server may have processed it even though the connection dropped. If you cannot confirm the result, show “Could not confirm” and provide a safe recovery instruction, such as checking the record after connectivity returns. A fallback object must not produce a success toast for an unconfirmed update.

Pick the fallback that matches the failure

Compare each option by the failure it addresses, whether it still needs internet, how fresh its data is, whether the operation changes state and how visibly degraded behavior appears to the audience.

Fallback Addresses Internet required Best fit Audience signal
Local fixture or mock response API outage, venue network loss No Prepared read-only story and deterministic interaction “Simulated” or “Demo data” label
Cached content or offline page Disconnected browser or temporary API failure No when already stored Previously viewed read-only content Cached timestamp and offline banner
Graceful error state Any failure where truthful data is unavailable No Commands, authentication and sensitive results Specific failure message and next step
Tested alternate network Venue Wi‑Fi loss Yes Live demo when cellular service and upstream API work Normal live indicator after verification

Cached or default results are naturally suited to queries. Microsoft’s .NET microservices guidance notes that using a fallback for updates or commands is more complex because the client must not imply that a state change occurred. Treat that distinction as a design rule, not a cosmetic label.

Implement browser offline behavior correctly

Cache the page and its essential assets

For a web demo, a service worker can intercept requests and Cache Storage can hold an application shell, offline page and selected read-only responses. Test installation and cache population while connected; a service worker that has never completed installation cannot help during the first outage.

Handle both exceptions and error statuses

Wrap the fetch in logic that handles a rejected promise and checks response.ok or the status code. A 500 response is not a fetch exception. Route both cases to the same policy decision: retry if appropriate, serve a marked cache entry, or show the error state. Do not cache an error page as if it were valid business data.

Make stale data understandable

Store the time and source with each cached response. If the data may have changed, show its age and explain that the view is not live. A stale read-only report can be a useful fallback; a stale authorization decision, inventory count or command result may be unsafe to present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test the failure and recovery paths

Do not rely on unplugging a cable once. Microsoft guidance recommends using a mock service that returns representative errors and temporarily forcing failures in custom services. Build a repeatable rehearsal matrix:

  1. Disable venue Wi‑Fi. Confirm that the essential local path still opens and that the UI leaves the loading state within the chosen timeout.
  2. Delay the API. Make the mock exceed the timeout. Verify that the retry count is finite and that the fallback appears afterward.
  3. Return transport failures. Simulate connection resets or refused connections. Check that only safe, transient operations retry.
  4. Return HTTP errors. Produce representative 4xx and 5xx responses. Confirm that the application checks the status and does not treat the response as successful data.
  5. Attempt a state change while offline. Verify that the UI says the action could not be confirmed and does not show a success state based on a local default.
  6. Restore the dependency. Close the circuit or wait for its recovery probe, then verify that a deliberate refresh returns to live data and updates the status indicator.
  7. Repeat on presentation hardware. Use the exact build, browser profile, credentials, fixtures, screen resolution and power settings you will use on stage.

Record what the presenter should say at each transition. A short explanation such as “The live service is unavailable; I am switching to labelled demo data” is more credible than pretending the outage did not happen.

Use a phone hotspot only as an alternate path

An Android device may support tethered hotspot or local-only hotspot behavior, but controls and capabilities vary by device and version. Check the feature, carrier allowance, battery level and password before arriving, then test the complete route to the API at the venue.

  1. Confirm that cellular data works at the venue and that the remote API is reachable from it.
  2. Enable the hotspot and connect the presentation computer before the audience arrives.
  3. Verify DNS, authentication, certificates and any allowlists that may treat the new network differently.
  4. Keep the local fixture fallback ready even after the hotspot test.

A hotspot changes the path between your computer and the internet. It cannot fix an upstream outage, invalid credentials, a server-side configuration error or a bug in the demo. If the API itself is down, switching networks only makes the same failed request from a different connection.

Prepare a day-of runbook

Before leaving

  • Run the demo once with live services and once with the network disabled.
  • Check that fixtures, cached assets, service-worker registration and local certificates are present.
  • Charge the computer and phone, carry the hotspot credentials, and keep an offline copy of the presentation narrative.
  • Confirm that no secret, personal record or development endpoint is embedded in the fallback data.

At the venue

  • Test venue Wi‑Fi, then test the hotspot from the actual presentation position.
  • Call the API health or representative endpoint, not merely a captive-portal page.
  • Warm the browser cache and open the exact route you will present.
  • Close unrelated tabs and processes that could consume bandwidth or alter the demo state.

During the presentation

  • Watch the status indicator so you know whether the screen is live, cached or simulated.
  • If the timeout expires, narrate the transition and use the prepared path rather than repeatedly clicking.
  • For an unconfirmed command, stop and state that the service did not confirm it.
  • Do not expose stack traces, access tokens or raw internal URLs while diagnosing the outage.

Troubleshoot by symptom

The spinner never ends

Check that the request has an enforced timeout and that the timeout is cleared when the request resolves. Inspect whether a retry loop is restarting the timer. If the budget is exhausted, route to fallback or an error screen.

The app shows a blank page offline

Verify that the service worker installed while connected, that the offline route is in Cache Storage, and that the application handles a rejected fetch. Test a hard reload with the network disabled; a page that worked only because it remained in memory is not an offline fallback.

The app claims success after an API error

Check whether the code tests the HTTP status and whether a generic response parser treats an error body as valid data. Separate the command’s pending, confirmed and unconfirmed states. A local optimistic update must be reversible when confirmation does not arrive.

The hotspot connects but the API still fails

Test the API independently from another device or network. Then check credentials, DNS, certificates, firewall rules and service health. If those are correct and the upstream service is unavailable, stop changing networks and use the local fallback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cached data looks misleading

Show its timestamp and provenance, reduce the view to facts that remain valid, and switch to an explanatory error state when freshness is essential. Never label stale or fixture data as live.

What a reliable demo looks like to the audience

The strongest failure behavior is predictable: the interface responds within a bounded time, identifies whether it is live or degraded, preserves a useful read-only story where that is safe, and refuses to claim an unconfirmed state change. The presenter knows the exact sentence and screen to use for each branch. That combination makes a network outage a controlled mode change rather than an accidental second demo.

Use the live path when it is healthy, but design and rehearse the local path as a first-class part of the product. That is the practical meaning of reliability on hackathon day.
